Free To Be You and Me
In grade 3 art class, we are studying the word VALUE, which is connected to
the new unit oI inquiry. We will use the Iirst week just to introduce the concept
oI values and what it means in deIining who we are as individuals. Students
will be making a list oI personal values that they have in their liIe. We will
also discuss how value in art can also be the tonal quality (lightness or
darkness) oI a color. So, in Iact, there are two diIIerent deIinitions Ior
VALUE.
Next, students will practice making diIIerent values oI gray, as well as values
oI other colors (in preparation Ior the main project). This will be done on a
Value Wheel which will be on display when completed.
This will Iinally lead us into our main project which could be titled, "Values oI
Gray SelI-Portraits." Students use their knowledge oI color values and create a
selI-portrait oI themselves using only gray values. Their Iinal piece will have
their personal liIe values written in the background.
