Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of February 6, 2012

Unit of Inquiry Thanks for supporting our young artists last week! We hope you learned a lot! A big thank you to Nathan Shrom for the great work! Also, thanks to the parent volunteers who helped in the weekly art lessons. We finish up our unit this week and will have several more art opportunities. After the break we start a weather unit. Your child will bring home a weather diary to keep over the break. It is a way to tune into the weather and should only take a few minutes a day. Please return this the first day after the break. We have already looked at some books to make inferences and will continue this week. Mysteries are really good for this, as there are definite clues for the reader to follow. The students are at the level where they need to infer when they read, so we will keep practicing. Some classes have used visual images and music to spur inferences. Raz Kids is a great way for students to practice their skills in short texts. We continue to write and read poetry as well. We will continue this after the break as well. We are encouraging students to take more pieces through the entire writing process, so that they make time to revise and edit. As we focus on different traits of writing students are looking at their own work to apply what they have learned. We are beginning a unit on fractions this week. Each child will be looking for fractions in the real world. Students who are practicing regularly on XtraMath are seeing a big improvement in their fact recall! Most students have completed their level in addition and are working on subtraction and multiplication. Your child should do all their own typing for this. We welcome David back today! Thanks to Ms. Bodrogi and Mr. Walters for filling in so capably while David was injured. The ES Student Council is running a penny drive where you can donate your spare change until February Break. The proceeds will go to buy recreation equipment for a local orphanage. Thanks for your support! Please send in some scraps of wrapping paper or other interesting paper (tissue, colored, etc) for an art project by Wednesday. Look at the lost and found website:
