NYC Design Commission Dear Commissioner: I became a community activist because I developed a love for Brighton Beach as a child spending my summers with my Grandmother. In 1964 I moved here with my husband and raised two children. The boardwalk is our backyard and it is an important part of our lives. My children grew up on the beach and playing on the boardwalk as the summer sky broke out in brilliant fireworks. I keep a wall of pictures in my office which reflect the original boardwalk being broken down, the Brighton hotel being moved, and the boardwalk of today being created. For over a Century new Americans have settled in our seaside community, enjoying our wonderful Boardwalk. Our historic BOARDWALK doesn't belong to you and me, but the future generations to come. The City has no right to corrupt this treasure by replacing wood with cement. It's a boardwalk not a Sidewalk!! Cement is not more durable or less expensive. In the long run, you will be spending our tax dollars to replace miles of cracked cement. If you observe the multi-dwellings that embrace this boardwalk you will see the damage that salt air does every year. Most our buildings need regular pointing. I know because my agency is the one filing complaints for multiple leaks. From my office I can see mold forming on one of the Oceana Condominiums facing the back of Chase Bank's Parking lot.
