The Indicative Mood

What it is:
The mode of EXPRESSING ASSERTION or PRESENTING CERTAINTY OR REALITY. It does not necessarily mean that the statement IS certain or real; it just means that the speaker is PRESENTING the statement as such.

What it can do:

In standard cases: 1. It can present an assertion as a STATEMENT THAT IS NOT CONTINGENT ON ANYTHING. (This is, by far, the most common use.) The sower went out to sow. (Mk 4:3) 2. It can ASK A QUESTION that expects the answer to make an assertion. ; Are you the king of the Jews? (Mt 27:11) Under special circumstances: 3. In conditional statements, it can indicate THE ASSUMPTION OF TRUTH FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT or THE ASSUMPTION OF UNTRUTH FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT. , ; If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? (Mt 12:27) , For if you believed Moses, you would believe me. (Jn 5:46) 4. It is USED WITH VERBS OF OBLIGATION, WISH, OR DESIRE, and is followed by an innitive. , . Teacher, we desire to see a sign from you. (Mt 12:38) 5. The FUTURE INDICATIVE can be used TO MAKE A COMMAND. , , , You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness. (Mt 19:18)
