    A good conductor is normally in the form of a long thin rod for thermal conductivity experiments because heat flows more quickly through the increased surface area of a thin rod compared to a solid shape, allowing measurements to be taken more rapidly. A good insulator is in the form of a large thin disc because heat flows more slowly through the material when there is less surface area for heat to transfer across, like in a flat broad disc, enabling measurements to be made before the material reaches thermal equilibrium.
