The document discusses greenhouse gases and global warming. It notes that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the atmosphere, causing the greenhouse effect. It states that carbon dioxide contributes most to global warming. The consequences of increased global warming include rising sea levels from melting ice caps and ocean acidification. Solutions proposed include reducing fossil fuel use, switching to renewable energy, and carbon capture and storage technologies.

Greenhouse effect and Global warming
The warming of the earths surface by infrared radiation is known as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouses gases A greenhouse gas is one that lets the suns radiation through but prevents the infrared radiation leaving. All greenhouse gases have chemical bonds that absorb infrared radiation these cause bonds to 5/20/12 vibrate and stretch.
Green house gases
The contribution of a gas to the greenhouse effect depends on its greenhouse factor and its atmospheric concentration measure in (part per million by volume ppmv). Carbon dioxide has to the most contribution of the greenhouse factor by 72.4%. Methane is the second Nitrogen dioxide is second 5/20/12
How is co2 removed
Plants move carbon dioxide by photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide can react with water hence the sea can act as atmospheric sinks. Its converted in calcium carbonate by zooplankton in the oceans. 5/20/12
Consequences of Global Warming
Melting of the ice caps is likely to take place and rise sea levels. When co2 dissolves in water, acidic solutions are formed. This acidification can lead to dissolving of the coral reefs Climate changes can cause desertification of arid places 5/20/12
Reducing Greenhouse Gasses
The international agreement known as the kyoto protocol was brought up in 1997 that dangerous climate change must be made. By 2012 emissions of 5% of greenhouse gasses must be reduced. The Rio agreement was one that emphasis the development of environmental impact. Montreal-Ban use of (cfcs) which destroyed the ozone layer 5/20/12
How can emissions be reduced
Reduce the use of fossil fuels for energy production. Use renewable resources Plan carbon capture storage (CCS), could reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, by 90%. Stores carbon dioxide from power stations. Could be stored in underground rocks and storage. 5/20/12 Carbon dioxide can react with metal oxides to
