News from Portugal

Roberto inform: As I have informed the members of this project, I am an ICT teacher working with a group of primary students aged 8 to 9 years olds. I only have 45 minutes a week with my students and my aim is to open their minds of what we can do with technology. This activity took me 3 classes of 45 miunutes to implement. So what we did was the following: a) Lesson 1- The students went to the library and looked at some pictures with plants and animals. I then asked them to draw with a pencil on a A4 piece of paper some of the images they saw. b) Lesson 2- During these 45 minutes I demonstrated to the students how to scan a piece of A4 paper to the computer, using a SCANNER. The students then followed suit and scanned all their work from Lesson 1 to the computer. c) Lesson 3- During these 45 minutes I demonstrated to the students how to edit an image with a freeware application called PHOTOSCAPE. After this, all the students edited their images created during Lessons 1 and 2.

The second activity they worked was to do some research on the natural vegetation that our region Aljezur, Algarve, Portugal has. Lesson 4- The students into 9 groups had 2 or 3 plants, shrubs or trees to research. After that they decided what technology they were going to use. After explaining to them the different kinds of software availbale, they decided on Google Images, Google Translator, Photoscape, Powerpoint and Wikipedia. Lesson 5- During this lesson the students create folders on their desktop, search for images related to their topics and save these same images to their folders. Lesson 6- During this lesson the students draw the trees, shrubs and plants on an A4 paper and place their common names in English and Portuguese. The studetns then digitalized their work to the computer using the scanner. Lesson 7- They edited the images searched on Google images and the drawings using a freeware application called Photoscape.

Lesson 8- During this lesson the students informed how to search for information on wikipedia. They all looked for the definitions of their trees, shrubs and plants and saved the information to a notepad file. Lesson 9- During this lesson the students created a presentation using the program Microsoft Powerpoint. They create titles with WORDART and then insert and resize their images. They also added their Wikipedia definitions.

Farm visit in ICELAND

Yesterday, Saturday 19th May we went to visit the farm. Thats how we could give the children a chance to see the animals. We saw cats and kittens of her, Icelandic Sheepdog, cows and calves, sheep and lambs, horses and foals, and young chickens. We had a really successful day in the country as you can see from the photos. Every summer we put down our vegetables in the valley. We go every day to think about it, watering and taking weed. For children, this is both informative and enjoyable. In August, we have harvest festival. Cook a good vegetable soup and cook potatoes with haddock.

The greenhouse in Iceland

The Icelandic climate is not exactly a hospitable one when it comes to agriculture. The first green-house was built in Hverageri in 1930, and due to all the geothermal water in this area Hverageri is one of the main green-house towns in Iceland. Having the greenhouse speaks much for the Icelandic people's ability to tame their environment. In a country well known for it's phenomenal volcanic eruptions, it is a wonder that their country can trade at all with the international community. But the same forces of nature that destroys, also creates lifelines: the volcanic eruptions and hot springs give resource to geothermal energy used to power food production and sustainable heat for household use and generation of electricity. The same electricity used to heat up the greenhouses in the south.

We found spring in Poland Yesterday we were looking for spring in our school garden. And we found many spring signs.

First sign of spring? ICELAND Maybe we found the first sign that spring is coming. It's strange that we found this tree in the dark forest. We are going to send you photos of what we feel and reminds us of spring. This has been a tough winter in Iceland, great snow. We will be glad when it begins to warm up and the spring comes.

We learn about: Experiment with organic and inorganic materials in Iceland; Quizes and crosswords about Wild animals in Poland.ppt; The smallest animals in Poland - the result of research on the smallest animals in Polandinsects, spider,...; The most popular fruit in Poland:

Eden s Garden GREECE

Three years ago my sudents wrote a letter to the mayor of Kavala to help them plant trees in a plot beside our school. The mayor came to our school with his gardeners who helped each child to plant a tree. Since then we call this place "Eden's Garden" and students go very often there to take care of their trees.
