W WW . WRSD . CA / PIONEER

Id like to take this opportunity to thank you, our parent community, for your continued support of your child(ren)s education. Our staff appreciates your support in attending parent teacher interviews, school council, our Remembrance Day assembly, helping with field trips, the list goes on. As the snow continues to fall, we ask that you remind your child(ren) of the importance of being properly dressed in warm clothing. Students are expected to spend part of their noon hour outside. As such, we need to ensure their safety by having them appropriately covered. We have had a wonderful start to the year. Again Id like to express our gratitude for your continued support! SCIENCE CLUB
CURIOUS MINDS INITIATIVE An important part of learning science is doing science! This school year, Pioneer is offering students the opportunity to practice science investigation and invention with the Curious Minds Initiative (Pioneer School Science Club). The primary goal of our club is for students to develop their own, original experimental, innovation or study project surrounding a topic that evokes interest. Each week, after school hours, students meet to share ideas and to work on their project. It is not mandatory for students to attend the meetings once a week, and there are a handful of students who are developing their projects outside of school. The requirement is that the students check-in with Mrs. Barr once a week to discuss the progress they have made. Some of the interesting topics, which the students are working on, range from celiac disease to Iridology to bacteria affecting canola plants. Students in the club will be attending the Central Alberta Regional Science Fair (CARSF) on March 15th and 16th at Bower Place Shopping Centre in Red Deer, Alberta. Pioneer School is also planning an expo to showcase student projects and to prepare students for their participation in the CARSF. The deadline for entries in the CARSF is February 22nd, 2013. The CARSF offers a multitude of awards for well-done projects; including, for a grade 12 student, tuition paid for one year to Red Deer College. Elementary Best of Fair Awards are also awarded to the best three elementary projects. Moreover, the top six students in grades 7-12 are eligible to participate in the annual Canada Wide Science Fair, which is held in Lethbridge during the month of May. We wish the Curious Minds Initiative good luck in developing their experiments and projects. Stay tuned for upcoming science club news!

ATTENDANCE / LATES / SAFE PHONE

Any student who comes in late must report to our attendance secretary Mrs. Walker located in the library, so she can stamp the students agenda. That way the student will not continue to be marked absent. Students must have a note from the doctor, dentist or parent, or a parent phone call, to be excused. Please call our Attendance Answering Machine any hour of the day or night to leave a message excusing your childs absence or late. Call 403-844-4213.

BAND NEWS
Band Participation
Some students have been quite forgetful over the past month. When instruments, music or supplies don't come to band a student begins to fall behind quickly. Please make sure your son/daughter is clear on what days of the cycle he/she has band. Another issue is instruments being left in the band room or entry way for days at a time. Regular practice is part of every students mark and is necessary for success on an instrument and for the group. In Grade 7 and 8 students are expected to contribute in this way in order to participate in the extra curricular trips. PIONEER BAND CONCERT - Dec. 5th The concert will feature the Grade 7 and 8 Concert Bands as well as the Woodwind Choir. Grade 7 and 8 Band students are reminded that they must have black dress pants and white fitted short sleeve crew neck t-shirts. The uniform requirements were outlined in the band handbook that students received at the beginning of September. Students must have black socks. Vests will be distributed to all Grade 7 and 8 students. Students are expected to arrive at the concert by 6:30 pm to warm- up. See you on December 5th. *Bonus Marks* WCHS Concert - Dec. 3rd Any Grade 6, 7 or 8 band student who attends the West Central High School Band Concert at the West Central High School gym on Wednesday, November 22nd is eligible for Bonus Marks.
