TRANZUM has emerged as a progressive master enterprise offering services in diversified industries including express, logistics, warehousing, distribution, gift delivery, mail order, travel and tours, visa drop box, management development, event management and publications. The TRANZUM enterprise has established offices in South Asia, North America and Europe.
When people take pleasure and pride in what they do, then success becomes a foregone conclusion. The journey, that invariably begins with the first few tentative steps, soon assumes a life and dynamism of its own as destination after destination is charted, arrived at, and proceeded from, for the pursuit of excellence has no destination, and remains a journey in perpetuity along an ever rising graph of attainment. Along the way it becomes necessary to take stock, review strengths, and address weaknesses, and sometimes restructure and reconfigure in view of new realities. "Prosperity is the ability to succeed with relative ease," says Spencer Johnson, Management guru and author of 'Who Moved My Cheese'. "Too much change is not wise, and too many little changes don't work. You have to make a few big, simple changes that will have a significant impact." He goes on to say that "... the more you care for your employees the more successful your company will be, and that means listening to them and hearing what they feel about issues such as change. The wisdom of the group is always greater than the wisdom of just one leader, so it is important for the company to buy into that..." The above best describes the philosophy at work that has seen Mr. Khalid Awan execute some broad strokes and leverage his successful courier company TCS into a multibusiness group, TRANZUM, focused on attaining global market share in diverse endeavours. The new businesses are natural upstream and downstream activities of the core competency that TCS has acquired over the last 23 years of its existence. They are manned by old colleagues with new mission statements and a shared vision that accepts nothing less than perfection as par for the course. The wisdom of the group has been harnessed in full measure, and many a midnight lamp has burnt at all levels of the organizational hierarchy, charting the best possible course in the increasingly borderless global village. The leader has led from the front when required. For the most part he has enjoyed the ride as his able bodied and worldly-wise lieutenants took charge of the process, and thrilled and delighted each other with their innovative and out-of-the-box approaches so necessary for upward mobility in a highly competitive business environment. The changes have been few, but they have been significant.

Leadership, Innovation Entrepreneurship

Support, Human Resource, and Marketing Services. C: Given its very high brand recognition developed over the last 23 years, TCS will remain the prime identification of TRANZUM in the foreseeable future. Why did you not leverage an existing strength and establish the TCS GROUP instead of opting for a brand new name that will require considerable investment before its brand value can be developed? KNA: Yes, TCS is a strong brand in this market, and would therefore remain our flagship company in Pakistan. However, when trading globally in services other than courier and logistics, we needed to have names and distinct identities for our new services. This is necessary not only for marketing purposes but also for each company to have its separate focus and customer orientation, a case in point: the needs of a courier services customer are different from the needs of a travel services customer. Accordingly staff training and procedures have to be different. We have thus organized ourselves as follows: TCS providing courier and logistics services; FLYING WAREHOUSE customized airfreight solutions; ROAD TRANSPORT warehousing and distribution; SENTIMENTS EXPRESS Gifts, Greetings and mail-order services; INTIANA - Travel and Tours; OCTARA - Training, Events and Publications; INFOTHON - web based e-commerce services. Born as separate business units within TCS, three of the above have so far matured into independent companies, and these companies, either through our own entities or global alliances, are capable of serving customers anywhere in the world. Some of our customers in Pakistan have already experienced the benefits of this global reach and resourcefulness. For example, the Management Association of Pakistan (MAP) Convention organized by OCTARA is a world-class event surpassing previous standards in terms of speakers and sponsorships. Drawing upon our resourcefulness and experience gained in organizing similar events abroad, OCTARA has attracted world-class speakers and sponsors like CNN and Boeing - for the first time in Pakistan. Likewise customers in developed markets such as North America have also experienced our unique customizations. TCS earned an award recently from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for providing an innovative and cost-efficient delivery solution to the aboriginal populations inhabiting the remote territories. The reason for opting for a new name -TRANZUM, is that we needed a name to define our group of companies, and this name had to be pronounceable internationally, compatible across cultures, not yet patented anywhere, and most importantly, in today's global economy have a dot.com domain available. Similarly all other names like Intiana, Flying Warehouse, Octara, and Infothon had to qualify these criteria. The naming exercise was therefore

on the shape of things to come
A long and very eventful journey has seen TCS grow into its present dynamic manifestation that defines its ambitions and parameters in terms of the limitless global village. CONNECT caught up with the Chairman of TRANZUM long distance via the Internet, and gained an insight for its readership on the thinking that has gone into this reinvention of the business.

INFOTHON
CONNECT: What were the strategic considerations that led to the name TRANZUM? Khalid N. Awan: As we evolve into a multi-services group trading globally, we needed a common identity and a name. C: How do you envision TRANZUM adding value to the existing business units? KNA: Firstly a common identity would demonstrate relationship between various entities comprising the Group, who now have a family name. Customers would thus become aware of Group's overall capabilities. Internally it enables the TRANZUM Group to centralize core management functions such as Information Technology Page # 02

GROUP CEO'S MESSAGE

We are bringing out this Spring 2006 issue of CONNECT at a critical juncture in the development of one of our nascent enterprises. Octara has developed very quickly indeed, and it has as much to do with the dynamism of the team that is heading Octara, as with a period in our corporate lives where human resource development has been flagged across the board as a key area in the acquisition of competitive advantage. As event managers of the 10th Management Convention 2006, Octara has staked its rising reputation to delivering a 'WOW!' experience to its highly valued client, the Management Association of Pakistan. I sincerely wish Hamza Hashmi and his team top-notch success in the conduct of this very prestigious three days event that has seen confirmations from a very distinguished panel of speakers indeed. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the cherished ambition of our Chairman find practical expression in the shape of the TRANZUM Group that will fine tune and promote globally the seven businesses under its care. A great deal of time and energy has been expended upon the emergence of this progressive master enterprise offering services in diversified industries as we evolve into a multi-services group trading globally. All that now remains is for all our colleagues to redouble their effort and accept no limits on how far we can go both as individual enterprises, and collectively as TRANZUM. This issue we are truly privileged to carry within our pages the profiles of two ladies who have done Pakistan proud. Arfa Karim, at the tender age of 10, has notched up some amazing accomplishments, and been invited for a one-on-one with the right honorable Bill Gates. Samina Rizwan is heading up the regional operations of Oracle, and is a formidable force at work for Pakistan. TCS youth trainer Sidra Iqbal has shown the flag at the World Youth Congress, and has filed a most stimulating report. There is a whole lot more in this issue of CONNECT that I hope will meet with your approval. Happy reading, and do keep us in the loop with your feedback. Jamil Janjua

an extensive process in which the core management team was deeply involved. As for question why we did not adopt the name TCS Group, this is because TCS is now one of the companies in the group. It is our pride and a strong name, the eldest sibling in the TRANZUM family. In the course of time it is our hope that the new entities will become equally famous. C: A question on a few minds is whether TCS Courier is being primed for a merger with an existing international operator? KNA: TCS has come of age as a world-class company in its own right. For nearly quarter of a century it has delivered quality that has earned brand recognition and a market share that is the envy of any international operator looking at Pakistan. Hence we have had offers, and this is normal in business. However, at this time our entire focus is to develop TCS even further as exciting opportunities beckon us. C: What is you vision for Tranzum? KNA: To be a multiple services provider leveraging the power of e-commerce globally. Arie De Geus, Professor at London Business School & former executive for Royal Dutch Shell, has said that enduring organizations are "...financially conservative; their leaders are outward looking; they have a strong value system; they all have a very tolerant management style; and, critically, they do not define themselves by the nature of their assets, instead in terms of their human community." He could very well have been speaking about TCS and the new TRANZUM Group.

Editors Note
Whenever the concept of a group of companies is brought into a business, the business tends to grow in all directions and at times at exponential rates. This piece of corporate wisdom comes from the latest entrant to the TCS human capital bank, Mr. Khalid Dar, Senior Manager Call Center. Khalid Dar's seen a fair bit of the world so he probably knows what he is talking about, particularly in reference to TRANZUM. Now growing in all directions and at times at exponential rates appears to be all good, provided the action stations are manned by cadres that relish the act of pulling 'Gs', and just as quickly settling into consolidating the gains made. Flat-out gallops need to be interspersed with steady canters, or even the occasional trot, to help the mount recuperate and remain battle-worthy for the long haul. Burnout is a clear and present danger when taking on the world, and one must bear in mind that Rome was not built in a day, and that perseverance is the key to success. On that thought provoking note, here's wishing TRANZUM a glorious future.

The Khaleej Times International Forum

Coexistence of Civilisations

The Khaleej Times International Forum brought together the cream of the East and West to discuss "Muslim World and the West: Coexistence of Civilizations." Heads of Government, Consuls and prominent businessmen attended the event that cleared many misconceptions between the two civilizations. It was the third discussion hosted by the Khaleej Times, and attended as panelists by Lord Merlin Victor Hay who is the Earl of Errol and Lord High Constable of Scotland and a member of the British House of Lords. Also on the panel was Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, a Muslim Asian Member of the British House of Lords and a leading voice in the 'Interfaith Inter-religious Dialogue Group' in British Parliament. The third panelist was Lady Olga Maitland, president of the Defence Strategic Forum and a former Member of the British Parliament, and Mohammad A. R. Galadari, Chairman of the Galadari Group. A balance of perspective is lacking in the way both the West and the Muslim World deal with each other was Lady Olga Maitland's view. "You have a West that is fabulously rich and strong, whereas the Muslim society by and large lives under miserable conditions of poverty and dispossession," she said. "The Muslims do not hate the West. What they hate is, however, certain policies of some Western countries." The need of the hour, according to Lord Merlin Victor Hay, is to understand that the ethical core of all cultures is one, beneath the external differences that keep them apart. Lord Nazir Ahmed was blunt in his analysis of Western attitudes that he said smacked of double standards. The consensus that emerged from the highly stimulating discourse was that dialogue alone is the way forward for cultures and civilizations to coexist. Javed Malik, consultant Khaleej Times International Forum, set the tone of the discussion in his opening remarks by stressing that the publication of the blasphemous cartoons

High Achiever Pre-teen Takes Bill Gates to task!

Arfa Wows The World

Arfa, a promising software programmer from Faisalabad, Pakistan, is believed to be the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in the world, a designation given to outside experts who prove their ability to work with Microsoft technologies. While some teenagers have achieved this feat, it's far more common among adults seeking to advance their computer careers. She was nine years, nine months, 11 days, and six hours old when she took the exam. Fully aware of the fact that she's the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional, she wants to be specific about her age at the time, in case another young programmer emerges someday to challenge what she calls her "world record." Arfa's one-on-one meeting with Gates was part of a visit arranged and sponsored by Microsoft to better introduce Arfa to the company, and to give people at headquarters a chance to meet her. The week included lab tours and a series of informal sessions with Microsoft executives and employees, including a Pakistani employee group. She made an impression upon her American hosts through a combination of charm, flattery and boldness uncommon for someone her age writes Todd Bishop, reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer who covered Arfas visit. For example, during Arfa's meeting with Gates, she presented him with a poem she
w w w . t c s . c o m . p k

wrote that celebrated his life story. But she also questioned him about what she perceived to be the relatively small proportion of women on the campus. It should be balanced, said Arfa, an equal amount of men and an equal amount of women. About 75 percent of Microsoft employees are men, according to company data. Other topics they discussed included her Muslim faith and her hometown, an industrial city known for its textile businesses. "We discovered her, we ran into her, we feel very lucky," said Jawwad Rehman, Microsoft's country manager in Pakistan, who accompanied her to the company headquarters in Redmond. "But I'm sure there are many others out there, as well, who don't have access to the computers or the proper education system" as Arfa did. Previously unaware of the casual dress code at Microsoft, she said she had expected Gates to be wearing a suit but was surprised to find him in a casual shirt with the top button open. "I expected that all the people would be here in suits!"

Page # 07

Ultimately, Arfa says, she would like to go to Harvard University or MIT, and then either go to work for Microsoft in its developer division, or become a satellite engineer. These career choices are not the product of a natural progression of her present skill sets. Rather, they are inspired by her concern for global connectivity that is bringing different people together in peace and friendship. For the moment Arfa is studying in class 7 at the Multan City School, with basketball, cycling and horse riding as cocurricular interests. Her father, Amjad Karim, is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Armoured Corps, who has just returned from a tour of duty with UN Peacekeepers in the Congo. Her mother Samina has a Masters in Economics that she puts to good use running the family farm in Faisalabad. Arfa's accomplishment is "very impressive," said Michael Earls, 33, a software consultant and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer in Atlanta. "The type of thinking that goes into correctly answering those questions is pretty mature. ... Microsoft certifications are not a joke -- they're highly respected in the industry." Maths and Physics are Arfas favourite subjects, and Enid Blytons Secret Seven and Famous Five her favourite books, although her present read is Louis Fitzbezs Harriet The Spy. Arfa has two younger brothers, Daud (4) and Samad (8), and her current best friend is Hira. At the International Womens Conference in Multans Bahauddin Zakriya University recently Arfa read a paper to the great appreciation of the 2000 plus delegates. She also inaugurated a computer lab at Karachis Sindh Madressa, donated by financiers Khanani & Kalia, and got a commitment from them to donate one to a school in her hometown of Faisalabad as well. These now are the notso-simple pleasures of a Pakistani pre-teen growing up. So how does she handle all this attention? Her philosophy has the earthy simplicity of youth. Shyness is in the mind, she says. If you feel shy, you will be shy. If you feel confident then you will be confident. Clearly she is relishing her celebrity status. Great going girl!

TCS & HPJ Youth Trainer Sidra Iqbal at the 3rd World Youth Congress
Sidra Iqbal, celebrity trainer in public speaking for the TCS Hyde Park Juniors (HPJ) Program was fortunate to be one of the 700 participants selected out of 4000 applicants, and win a travel scholarship to Scotland to attend this esteemed event. As a youth delegate of Pakistan, and as the chosen spokesperson for the region of Asia (amongst 400 Asian delegates), she feels that youth-led development is perhaps one of the most effective tools in reaching the global aims of international prosperity and peaceful coexistence. At the Congress Sidra was truly in the thick of things, conducting a mentoring workshop Spread Your Wings and Fly; discussing and drafting the Congress policy document with groups of diverse nationalities and backgrounds; refurbishing an apartment for the homeless with her clan as the Action Project; and the numerous informal late-night-over-a-pizza talks. It is not the battles that we have lost along the way that haunt us the most, says Sidra. But those we never mustered the courage to fight. It is not when idealism fails that we are most disappointed, but when it is surrendered without a struggle. At conventions, such as the 3rd Youth Congress 2005, where you meet tens of zealous young delegates trying to contribute to uphold their pledges and promises, one realizes that yes a better tomorrow is possible. Indeed! Sidra has joined ARY Television as Product Development Manager for the entire Network spread over 12 channels, in addition to being inducted as Trainer for the Women As Global Leaders Conference organized by the UAE Ministry of Education and scheduled for March 2006.

w w w . o r a c l e . c o m / p k

Samina Rizwan is Oracle Corporations Regional Manager for SAGE (South Asia Growth Economies) West. Part of Oracle Corporation Singapore Pte Ltd, SAGE represents six South Asian Countries Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives. Samina is responsible for market development, revenue growth and finding ways of bringing relevant Oracle solutions to help government and business in these countries. Samina hails from an Air Force family. Her father was amongst the early bomber pilots of the PAF, a decorated soldier and a successful military diplomat. Her husband, the late Air Cdre Rizwanullah Khan, was a gifted and versatile officer - a sword of honour winner, a best pilots trophy winner, a gold medallist in aerospace engineering, besides being an F-16 combat pilot. Rizwan taught me the difference between a good professional and an exceptional one. The first real learning Samina says she ever did was when she joined the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Murree, and came under the tutelage of Sister Mary Andrew. Forever am I grateful to Sister Andrew for the values that she instilled in me; love of literature, respect for all religions, appreciating friends and making an effort to build character. Samina moved to Washington DC right after her 'O' levels. Her father was Defence Attache with the Pakistan Embassy and did not have enough money to put her through college. So she earned and learned her way. It taught me a lot about independence, the value of money, and my own ability to
w w w . t c s . c o m . p k

drive myself to intense levels of hard work. I acquired my present work ethics during those years when I paid my way through university in USA. She graduated from The American University in Washington DC with a bachelors degree in Information Systems Management. Samina Rizwan is a Trustee of Rizwan Scholars, a not-for-profit tertiary education project which grants scholarships for higher education to academically brilliant but economically challenged young Pakistanis. Samina is a Certified PMP (Project Management Professional) with the Project Management Institute of USA and is the first Pakistani woman to achieve this certification. On Pakistans image issue Samina says that generally speaking it is sadly true today that being Pakistani in the international business community does indeed pose some challenges. I am not sure if people realize how difficult it has become. I know that my colleagues at Oracle have learnt to respect and appreciate Pakistan because of me. It is my humble contribution to building the image of my country. On the professional front by the time Samina took over Oracle about four years ago, its technology was already the defacto standard for database and it was being used by over 400 licensed customers. A very serious issue was addressing the matter of unlicensed usage of Oracle products by organizations. Currently, the good news is that the market understands the strength of Oracle well. We have 600

customers in terms of database usage, and even our competition in the business applications space uses our database technology to enhance its software's performance. These are exciting times for Oracle in Pakistan. Reading has been her life's joy. Some durable favourites have been Shakespeare's tragedies, Far from the Madding Crowd by Hardy, Jinnah of Pakistan by Stanley Wolpert, and her latest favourite The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. She never tires of watching Peter Sellers' The Party. I'm sure very few beat Peter Sellers, but there's also Shahrukh Khan. It is impossible not to adore him. Samina loves eastern attire. Whether its shalwar qameez, saris, kurta pyjamas - it doesnt matter - the more ethnic the better. On the issue of female empowerment Samina is brief and to the point. First, it will take educating the Pakistani man. Then, it will take a lot of courage from the Pakistani woman to demand dignity and value for her being from her family and her community.

Trainers Resource Group

During the period under review the Trainers Resource Group met for its 112th Session with Ms. Masooma Kachelo, Senior Training Consultant speaking on 'NLP -The Psychology of Success: An Internal Dialogue.' Have you ever wondered, she posed, how does a man with no hands and no feet become a marathon runner clocking over 30,000 miles, while the King of Rock & Roll dies alone from a drug over dose in his bath tub? How does a man lift a metal pole weighing thousands of pounds to save a child trapped under it, but when asked to do it with no child to rescue can't even shake it? How does a man who works in the mailroom of a company become its CEO, while the MBA graduate struggles to get promoted? The science of Neuro(Mind) Linguistic(Communication) Programming(Patterns) would say the differences between

these people are their 'internal dialogues', how quickly they can access past successes to use as a spring board for the future(Anchoring), and the quality of the relationships they build with themselves and others(Rapport). NLP sees beliefs not as true or false but as USEFUL versus NOT USEFUL. And with this reframe makes it possible to overcome phobias, addictions, and blockades to successes. The one-hour presentation was structured by the learning philosophy: I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand. Ms. Masooma Kachelo is a trained psychologist, hypnotherapist, trainer and coach. She has an Llb (hons.) from the UK, Masters Degree in Family & Systems Therapy from Indiana State University, and a certification in Hypnotherapy from the Wellness Institute in Seattle. Her forte is in the field of human performance, motivation, and enrichment. At present, she is working as a Senior Consultant at Sensei International Karachi.

DARTing To Pakistans Aid

Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team
(CF-DART)
The Canadian Government has consistently demonstrated strong support for humanitarian assistance and disasterrelief operations throughout the world. Following the Earthquake the CF-DART Task Force Pakistan (TFP) set up camp at Garhi Dupatta, 20 kilometers southeast of Muzafarabad with a Medical Clinic and a Reverse osmosis Water Purification Unit (ROWPU). The CF-DART TPF has three ROWPUs in Muzafarabad. The origins of CF-DART go back to 1994 when the CF deployed 2 Field Ambulances to Rwanda. Despite the best efforts of all concerned, the relief effort after the peak of the Cholera epidemic that brought great suffering. This experience convinced the Canadian Government of the need to create a rapid response capability to provide effective humanitarian aid. The concept of the CF-DART was born. The DART is a military organization designed to deploy rapidly anywhere in the world to crisis ranging from natural disasters to complex humanitarian emergencies. It works in conjunction with national and regional governments and non-governmental agencies to stabilize the primary effects of emergencies; provide purified drinking water and medical aid to prevent the rapid onset of the secondary effects of the disaster; and gains time for the deployment of national and international humanitarian aid to facilitate long term recovery in a disaster stricken community. CF-DART has operated in Haiti, Honduras, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and now Pakistan. It comprises 200 CF personnel ready to deploy for up to 40 days in permissive environments where it will not encounter any organized resistance or threat. It can be activated by a request from an individual country or the UN, and requires permission from the Canadian Government. CF-DART serves the four critical needs of primary medical care, production of safe drinking water, a limited specialist engineering capability, and a command and control structure that allows for effective communications with the host nation and the other agencies involved in the relief effort. CF-DART comprises of Headquarters (45 personnel) for strategic level liaison; Logistics Platoon (20 personnel) for transport and supplies; Engineer Troop (37 personnel) for bulk and bagged water, and limited construction; Medical Platoon (40 personnel) for tented facility catering to 250 out-patients and 10 in-patients per day. Corporate Profile

Established in 1992 as the first private life insurance company after the Government of Pakistan opened up life insurance to the private sector, EFU Life today is the largest life insurance company with over 50% of the private sector market share.

EFU Life is part of the EFU Group which has a history dating back to 1932, when the Eastern Federal Union Insurance Company was registered in the city of Calcutta, India. The Company operated in India and Burma and sold both general and life insurance. In 1947, with the formation of Pakistan, EFU (as the www.efulife.com company was popularly recognized) moved to Pakistan and rapidly established itself as the leading insurance company in the Country. By 1961, the Company was the largest insurance company not only in Pakistan but also in all of Afro-Asia excluding Japan. It remained so until 1972 when life insurance in Pakistan was nationalized. From this time onwards EFU operated solely as a general insurance company. From its re-birth in 1992 to date, in a relatively short span of 14 years, EFU Life's brand name is synonymous with innovation, quality customer service and professionalism. EFU Life is the first, and currently the only life insurance company in Pakistan to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification. The success of EFU Life can be attributed to a number of factors, which the management calls the "EFU Advantage". These factors include the Company's products, sales force, systems, values and people. Some of the EFU Life firsts in Pakistan are: computerized product illustrations for clients; unit linked products; critical illness products; inflation protection benefit; tax qualified pension plans and extended critical illness product. The Company markets its individual life products through a professional full time direct sales force - an integral part of the EFU Advantage. The Company's values center on providing "Client Satisfaction". The values are defined by the principles of good conduct, moral integrity and impeccable ethics. This value system is part of EFU Life's strategy to position itself as a company that cares for its clients. Its Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mr. Taher G Sachak, has helped in transforming the landscape of the life insurance industry in Pakistan. Prior to coming here in 1994, he was the Executive Director of Century Life, a large Life Insurance company in the UK. He took charge of EFU Life when it had only 10 employees. His particular expertise lies in sales management and product design. This product design expertise enabled EFU Life to pioneer new concepts in Pakistan such as "unit linking" and "critical illness". These innovations introduced by EFU Life gave the average investor the opportunity, for the first time in Pakistan, to avail the latest products marketed in the West. From these initial 10 employees EFU Life now has over 150 Head Office staff and a highly trained professional direct marketing force of over 1,600 spread over a network of 77 branches. The Company's gross premium income has increased from w w 65 .million in o1994p to 2.5 Billion in 2005. Rs w t c s . c m . k

Proctor & Gamble (P&G) came into being in 1837 in Cincinnati (USA), a busy center of commerce and w w w . p g . c o m . p k industry at that time. William Proctor was a candle maker, and James Gamble a soap maker, both emigres to the US from England and Ireland respectively. Their paths may never have crossed had they not married sisters Olivia and Elizabeth Norris whose father convinced his two sons-in-law to become business partners. From that humble but bold, new enterprise, P&G today has global operations in nearly 80 countries and markets its brands in more than 160 countries around the world. P&G operations in Pakistan began in 1989. "P&G's purpose is to provide branded products of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world's consumers," says A.G. Lafley, the Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive of Proctor & Gamble. "This purpose drives strategy. It guides the choices about what we will do and, just as important, what we will not do. At P&G we respect the consumer as boss. This respect is the reason P&G has stayed in business and grown for more than 165 years." According to a P&G estimate, consumers around the world choose P&G products about 30 million times a day, and use P&G products nearly two billion times every day. Pampers, Tide, Ariel, Pantene, Bounty, Pringles, Vicks, Head&Shoulders, Camay and Crest are some of the P&G brands that have become household names. P&G has more than a dozen brands that individually generate over one billion dollars in sales every year. Leadership; Ownership; Integrity; Passion for winning; and Trust are the P&G Values, with P&G people bringing the values to life as the Company focuses on improving the life of the world's consumers. "At P&G Pakistan we are constantly trying to go beyond our brands in order to help the communities we operate in become stronger, healthier and more informed," says Hans Dewaele, General Manager P&G Pakistan. "To this end we have formed strategic alliances with some of the most effective social welfare organizations currently operating here. Our causerelated marketing programs, with the help of our partners, reach and impact the lives of millions of Pakistani people annually." The Hospital Education Program is supported by Pampers, and educates young mothers about baby care practices, immunization and vaccination. The Baby Care Clinic Program, again supported by Pampers, educates young mothers by going to their doorsteps. 3 million children annually in 5000 schools are taught basic hygiene habits and the importance of washing hands, supported by Safeguard. "With some of the most far reaching social programs in the history of Pakistan's private sector, P&G Pakistan is intent on making a difference."

IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Personal development from traveling the extra mile in the service of the customer
We are doing this column a bit differently this issue of CONNECT. Having established that all TCS couriers regularly travel the extra mile for our valued customers in the line of duty, this time we look at how TCS couriers have progressed personally and professionally during the course of their employment with TCS, in the line of duty.

MUJEEB HASHMI joined TCS in 1982 as Operations

Assistant at a time when TCS and DHL were one entity. He has done his time on the frontlines delivering time sensitive documents and packages. 24 years later Mujeeb is in the HR department as TCS Manager for Training Resource, making training video guides for TCS couriers on personal grooming and client interface, and saving the Company the expense of hiring external trainers. This career progression has emerged out of Mujeeb's personal passion for the performing arts that has seen him deploy his considerable talent as actor, scriptwriter, director, producer, and concept originator. Eight of his plays have run on PTV and other channels, and include 'Rishtay Anjaney', 'Phir Yeh Hua', and the serial 'Take It Easy'. He has performed the role of a 'malang' in the music video 'Ishq Ishq'. Mujeeb says his career highpoint was in 2003 when he led the TCS 'Karavan-e-Azadi' from Karachi to the Khyber Pass, covering a distance of 3062 kilometers in 11 days on a Honda 70 motorcycle, along with five other colleagues that included Amir Nazar. Mujeeb and Amir went the entire distance, while the three other members of their five-man entourage came onboard from station to station. "It was the most memorable time of our lives. Mr. Saqib Hamdani made it possible with a Rupees 1.5 million budget. We were given VIP protocol right along the journey, and in every city we were joined by hundreds of people. At the Wagah border there was a grand ceremony, and in Lahore's Food Street we met Lallo Prasad Yadav who was visiting from India, and he questioned us in depth about our journey. Both PTV and India's Sahara TV interviewed us at length, and we made headline news in the local newspapers of the towns and cities that we traveled through. Another instance that he is

ALL SMILES! Amir Nazar and Mujeeb Hashmi particularly happy about is the skit that he and colleagues performed at the 20th anniversary occasion of TCS, as a result of which the 49 percent courier commission that the Company was deducting was restored to the couriers, with Mujeeb receiving a windfall of Rs.90,000 from the couriers as an expression of their gratitude to him.

Mujeeb is married and has two kids, daughter Ilsa (13) and son Sahil (7). To keep fit he is a regular at jogging.

AMIR NAZAR is equally thrilled about the bike ride to the

Khyber, and mentions it as the defining moment of his life. "We were really treated like visiting royalty where ever we went, and I can't thank TCS enough for that experience," says Nazar, who joined TCS in 1992, and has recently been made a TCS Franchisee for the New Sabzi Mandi area, that also includes the Baqai Medical and Cadet Colleges, as well as Gulshan-e-Maymar. "It is a matter of great pride and prestige for me to be the first TCS employee to be elevated in this fashion." While his investments are in the rentals and payroll, TCS provides him with the crucial back-end support. Earlier in his career with TCS Amir worked as sales solicitor and courier. Both he and Mujeeb concur that there is a considerable burnout factor at work as a courier. "The city streets are quite stressful, and to negotiate them on a daily basis all day long does take its toll." They have both been in some serious accidents that resulted in broken bones, and in Mujeeb's case a blood clot that took four months to dissolve and afflicted him with recurring blindness during that period. A shared passion between Amir Nazar and Mujeeb Hashmi is fishing, which is not surprising living on the coast as they do. Amir acknowledges Mujeeb as the senior expert angler, even though they fish in different groups. Amir's biggest catch this season has been an 8 kilo 'Dhotar' amongst a 1.5 maunds of assorted fish catch. "There is no comparison to eating fish that has been freshly caught," he says with a relish, preferring to have it either fried, or cooked with an assortment of herbs and spices. Amir is married with daughter Yusra (7), and sons Harris (5) and Afwan (1). Still very much in the prime of life, both Mujeeb and Amir have a long career ahead of them yet, and it is entirely possible that when we next visit them a few years hence, Mujeeb may well have transited to maker of LollyBollyHollyWood movies, and Amir the owner of a fish and chips franchise operation, in addition to being a TCS Franchisee. As they say in Swahili, 'Kay Sera Sera'!
