Boating Safety Unit: Lesson Plans

Lesson 1 Boating Terminology


1. Grade/Age Level:
Young adult and adult learners ages 16 and older

2. Subject Area:
Boating Safety

3. Time allotted for the lesson:


45 minutes on a computer

4. Short description of lesson:


a. In this lesson, the learners will discover commonly used boating

terminology.
b. They will use provided resources to define additional terminology

on their own.
c. They will identify the parts of a boat.

5. State Curriculum Standards met in this lesson:


The content of this lesson is in line with state, and federal boat operation and water safety requirements/regulations. It is designed as a supplement and precursor to taking a licensed boating safety class offered by the U.S. Coast

Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, or certain chapters of the American Red Cross.

6. Instructional Objectives:
a.

Students will be able recognize and define common boating terminology.

b. Students will demonstrate ability to utilize boating terminology resources.


c.

Students will be able to name and identify the parts of a boat.

7. Instructional Procedures
a. Lesson Set: The Typography image at the start of the lesson is

used to engage the learner on the subject of boating terminology. An introductory paragraph describing the importance of knowing boating terminology also sets up the lesson.
b. Techniques and activities: Learners are presented with a list

of nine common boating terms and their definitions. Learners are then shown eight additional terms without definitions. They are instructed to locate the definitions of these eight terms using provided links to several nautical term glossary websites. The learners are next shown a video that identifies the parts of a boat. Next they are instructed to identify the three parts of a boat that are not labeled in the provided image but were labeled in the video. The learners can check their answers using by clicking a button to reveal the missing labels.
c. Lesson Closure: Learners close the lesson by playing a

matching activity. Once they have completed the activity the lesson is complete. They can then proceed to the next lesson by following the provided navigation. 8. Adaptations for special learners: The computer based approach to this lesson will allow students with special needs to use a screen reader, interpretive software, adaptive keyboards, special input device, or other assistive technology as necessary. These students can also be given more time to complete the lesson if needed or placed with other students in groups or pairs as necessary. 9. Supplemental Activities: Extension and remediation:

Students wishing to expand upon learning content provided by the lesson will be provided with links to additional online resources. They will also be provided information on taking a licensed boating safety class offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, or certain American Red Cross. Students I need of remediation will be able to freely access the course website on their own to repeat lessons and perform self-study. 10. Assessment/Evaluation: An informal evaluation will be performed by students completing a selfevaluation using Qualtrics. 11. Learner Products: No product will be created from this lesson.
