Tips to Help You Rock Finals

Take advantage of help! Grand View offers a TON of helpful services: tutoring, writing center, library services & moreUse them! Be organized. Keep a post-it or notepad handy with your running to-do list; write when each task needs to be completed, and how long you think it will take you to complete. Add at least an extra hour to each to-do tasks time estimate. If you get done sooner, then its like youre getting the gift of extra time! Have a plan. Try to schedule on your calendar when you are going to complete the different tasks on your to-do list. Keep your list even after youve crossed off some of your tasks to see how much progress youve made. Pick the right location. Choose a spot thats free of distraction so you can focus (like the library). This also means avoiding spending time on Facebook, Twitter, & YouTube. Here are 5 cool tools to help you block distracting websites: (http://bit.ly/blockdistractions) Know when you need a distraction and go with it. Its important to say focused, but its better to spend 5 minutes indulging a distraction (be sure you limit yourself) than fight it for an hour and a half and not get anything accomplished during that time. Listen to your body. Is your brain fuzzy? Are you headdesking more than youre light bulb-ideaing? Thats your bodys way of telling you to take a break. Get up, walk around, stretch, get a drink of water and, dont forget, you need to sleep well several nights before an exam. Eat well. Your body needs the right fuel to keep going. Keep a snack in your bag if youre planning on a long study session. Eating healthy foods that contain natural sugars will help sustain you for longer, so rather than that big chocolate muffin, try grabbing an apple or a banana instead!

Living on campus this summer? Staying in the Des Moines area for summer break? Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Grand View Library! This summers theme embraces the renovation and construction projects around campus: Groundbreaking Reads. Cool off from the summer heat with our Lemonade Lunches in the Library (we provide the lemonade, you provide the lunch!); submit book titles along with your name and contact info for our prize drawings (yes, there are prizes)! More information will come through the All_Campus_Community email in early May! Whether youre planning on sticking close to Des Moines this summer, or planning a far-away trip, you can still escape & relax with a good book! The library has recently purchased many new fun reading books, so stop by and browse our leisure collection (found on the short bookshelves closest to the study rooms on the first floor)!
