Hot-dip Galvanized Steel Sheet

DURGRIP

Introduction
Hot-dip galvanized steel sheets are a familiar product that is deeply ingrained in our daily lives. It has a long history of application that covers a wide range of fieldsbuilding construction, civil engineering, electric appliances, automobiles and household articles. Nippon Steels hot-dip galvanized steel sheet, DURGRIP, which is supported by many years of accumulated expertise and advanced production technologies, has gained a high reputation in these fields of application. In addition to JIS and ASTM products, Nippon Steel offers a lineup of its own proprietary standards and coating types designed to meet the most demanding user requirements. The application of environmentally friendly materials in the making of finished products is a growing means by which to raise commodity values. Furthermore, the trend of reducing or prohibiting the use of chemical substances and other materials to mitigate environmental stress is becoming stricter day by day. Given these circumstances, Nippon Steel manufactures and markets DURGRIP21, chromate-free coated steel sheets that are completely free of chromate but excel in corrosion resistance and formability. This catalog outlines both DURGRIP (hot-dip galvanized steel sheets) and DURGRIP21 (chromate-free hot-dip galvanized steel sheets). Please use this catalog to select the hot-dip galvanized steel sheet most suitable for the intended application and to ensure quality finished product manufacturing.

DURGRIP

High Corrosion Resistance

DURGRIP assures long-term protection of the base metal (high red rust resistance). Because of a special surface treatment added to the zinc coating, DURGRIP offers high corrosion resistance (white rust resistance).

Beautiful Appearance
Zero-spangle products in addition to regular-spangled products having the fine luster peculiar to zinc can be supplied.

Hot-dip Galvanizing Line

Hot-rolled or cold-rolled coils Shear Welder Heat-treatment furnace

Excellent Adherence of Zinc Coating Meets Severe Fabrication Conditions

Production by continuous hot-dip galvanizing lines ensures that the alloying layer is thin and that zinc coating adherence is extremely high. Products that accurately meet application and fabrication conditions are available from a rich line-up of standards and specifications.

DURGRIP 21

Completely Chromate-free
DURGRIP21 is manufactured by providing a special coating film that contains no chromate.

High Corrosion Resistance and Tribological Properties

QM Type
Due to the effect of its special coating film, DURGRIP21 offers corrosion resistance and formability similar to conventional chromate-treated galvanized sheets. Because the formability of the special coating film is similar to that of chromate, the molds are easily adjusted.

Cut-length sheets

1. Base Metal
Hot-rolled or cold-rolled coils that conform to specified standards are used as the base metal for galvanizing. In the case of cold-rolled coils, for example, coils with specified properties that conform to various standards such as commercial quality, drawing quality, high strength, and other special qualities are used as the base metal.

3. Hot-dip Galvanizing
Steel sheets having cleaned surfaces are immersed in a molten zinc bath to provide hot-dip galvanizing. The mass of the coating is adjusted by means of gas wiping just after galvanizing.

QFK Type
Due to the effect of the special coating film, DURGRIP21 offers not only higher corrosion resistance but also a lower dynamic friction coefficient and higher tribological properties compared to conventional chromate-treated galvanized sheets.
DURGRIP21 is manufactured using a special coating Special coating film Hot-dip galvanizing Base metal

2. Annealing
In the annealing furnace, coils used for the base metal are subjected to surface treatments such as the cleansing of rolling oil and other deposits and the removal of oxides. Then, after being fully reheated, the coils undergo material property adjustments such as recrystallization.

4. Surface Treatment
The chromate treatment or chromate-free treatment is applied to the galvanized steel sheets in a chemical treatment equipment to protect the galvanized surface.

on hot-dip galvanized steel sheets (DURGRIP). DURGRIP21 equals to SILVERZINC21 for Japanese use.

Paintability differs according to the paint type and painting method. Accordingly prior confirmation is definitely requested to confirm the suitability of the paint to be applied. Further, because coating substrate treatment, such as those using zinc phosphate, can cause melting of the coating film, it is recommended that their use be avoided. (When providing a phosphate treatment, please use untreated galvanized steel sheets.)

Protective Action of Zinc on Steel

Iron (steel) is generally regarded as a product susceptible to rust (corrosion). However, rust in steel can be greatly inhibited by galvanizing. The reason for this is that electro-chemical protection (galvanic) action that works between steel and zinc is effective in rust prevention and the zinc itself is highly weather-resistant and difficult to ruse, as described below.

Zinc Coating Mass and Corrosion Resistance

As the zinc coating mass increases, the corrosion resistance of galvanized sheets is improved (salt spray test), thereby protecting the base steel for longer periods. (Fig. 3)

When a steel plate and a zinc plate are linked using a lead wire and placed in a beaker containing an electrolytic solution (for example, salt water), the steel does not corrode and rust forms only on the zinc. This is due to galvanic action by which some of the zinc dissolves in the salt water to produce zinc ions that flow from the zinc plate to the steel plate via the lead wire to prevent corrosion of the steel. In this way, the base steel sheet of the galvanized steel sheet is protected from corrosion. While the zinc on the galvanized steel sheet protects the base metal steel sheet of the galvanized sheet from corrosion by means of galvanic action, this is not the reason why galvanized sheets are in common use. Rather, it is due to the high corrosion resistance peculiar to galvanized sheetsin the case of outdoor applications, galvanized sheets offer corrosion resistance that is several times or even tens of times greater than ordinary steel sheets. That is, while zinc dissolves at a higher rate than steel, when exposed to ordinary atmosphere, zinc is slow to dissolve and difficult to corrode. Research has been conducted for many years on the outdoor service life (the period of time before red rust appears) of galvanized sheets. In the case of galvanized sheets with a coating mass of 350 g/m2, the approximate service life is 15~18 years in rural areas and 3~8 years in industrial areas. This clearly shows how long galvanized sheets can remain in use, compared to uncoated bare steel sheets. Next, an example of weather resistance tests by outdoor exposure is shown in Fig. 2. It is clearly understood from the test results that the corrosion of galvanized steel sheets is 5~30 times slower than that of steel sheets. As described above, galvanized sheets remain completely free of corrosion for a very long time in appropriate application environments. There were test results in which galvanized sheets showed no corrosion loss for several years in atmospheres of low humidity. This is thought to be due to the formation of a tight, extremely thin oxide film on the surface of galvanized sheets that becomes inactive under appropriate conditions (in fact, an extremely thin basic zinc carbonate is produced through interaction between water, carbon dioxide and air).

Chromium Coating Mass and Corrosion Resistance

Post treatment of galvanized sheets is important in improving white rust resistance. As the chromium coating mass in chromate-treated film increases, white rust resistance is improved. (Fig. 4)

1 Water leakage during loading/unloading and storage constitutes a cause of corrosion. Strictly avoid loading/unloading during rain and prevent exposure to seawater and dew condensation. Also, avoid storage in atmospheres of high humidity or sulfur-dioxide. Indoor storage under dry, clean conditions is recommended. 2 Broken or torn packaging paper must be repaired. 3 It is widely known that, when hot-dip galvanized steel sheets or coils are stored in a piled state for a long period, their surfaces become blackened. The occurrence of this phenomenon is especially accelerated in a high-temperature, highhumidity environment. To avoid this, ealier application is recommended.

The QFK type of DURGRIP21 (corrosion resistance- and lubricity-stressing type) has a lower friction coefficient and more easily causes slippage than conventional chromate-treated sheets. Therefore, particular care should be paid to preventing the falling, rolling, or buckling of coils and the collapse of piled sheets.

Handling
1 When coated sheets are rubbed using organic solvents, there are cases in which the coating film on the sheet surface will wear or peel off. 2 Contamination due to deposits of oil and other foreign substances may cause the deterioration of paintability.

Note: If skin-pass rolling is not specified, the items after surface finish symbol are indicated by moving these items to the left.

Precautions in Use
When inappropriate handling and application methods are used, coated steel sheets cannot demonstrate their characteristic properties. It is recommended that attention be paid to the following precautions regarding use.

Guide to Ordering
When placing orders, confirmation is required for the following items according to each intended application.

Welding and Brazing

1 In resistance welding, because the electrodes are soiled by the pick up of zinc, they should be properly maintained and replaced at regular intervals. In seam welding, the service life of electrodes can be extended by using a knurl-gear driving system. 2 In welding, fumes consisting mainly of zinc oxides are generated. Although the effect of these fumes will differ depending on the working environment, it is recommended that welding be conducted in a well-ventilated place. 3 In brazing, avoid high-temperature brazing using silver and other brazing fillers. Penetration of zinc alloy into crystal boundaries can occur, thereby causing brittle fracture in some cases.

Aging
Generally, steel sheets tend to show deterioration in quality over time e.g. degraded formability, stretcher strains, and coil breaks. To avoid this, usage at the earliest possible time is recommended. However, this problem can be avoided if products with aging resistance are selected.

Standards
Select the most suitable material quality from among the standards described in this catalog according to the severity and methods of fabrication.

Oiling
The decision to use, or not use, corrosion-resistant oiling can be made separately from the kind of surface treatment. Oiling is recommended in order to improve intermediate rust resistance, to mitigate fingerprints and damage during handling, and to maintain lubrication during press forming. Moreover, oiling is indispensable for galvanized sheets that will not receive any surface treatment.

Coating Mass
Select the most suitable coating mass according to the required corrosion resistance, application conditions, and fabrication methods.

Others
1 Prior confirmation is requested when galvanized sheets are to be exposed to high-temperature conditions for a long time. 2 Avoid treating in acid or strong alkaline environments. (There are cases in which phosphate zinc and other chemical treatments used for treating the base steel sheets for painting can have high acidity and cause the film to melt.)

Package Mass
Specify the package mass according to the local loading/unloading capacity and work efficiency. The heavier the coating mass, the higher the work efficiency. In the case of coils, specify the maximum mass (the minimum mass if necessary).

Sizes
The size of galvanized steel sheets (thickness, width and length) is the basic condition for product yield. Design the product referring the range of available sizes described in this catalog. Sizes are available in 0.05-mm increments for thickness and 1-mm increments for width and length.

Degreasing
1 The use of weak alkaline-type and organic solvents and nonionic-type detergents is recommended for degreasing. Some types of degreasing agents such as strong alkaline agents cause melting of the coating films and corrosion of the zinc. Prior confirmation is requested when such agents are used. 2 In the case of degreasing at high temperatures (more than 60C) or using ultrasonic cleaning, there are cases in which the coating film is damaged. Due care should be taken to prevent this. 3 Conduct sufficient drying after degreasing. Handling in an insufficiently dry state may cause the coating film to peel off. 4 In alkali ion cleaning, there are cases in which oily substances remaining in the cleaning water may adversely affect the coating film. Prior confirmation is requested when such cleaning is applied.

Inside and Outside Coil Diameters

In the case of coils, specify the inside and outside coil diameters according to the specifications of the uncoilers on the shearing line. When selecting inside diameters, it is necessary to consider the occurrence of break and reel marks on the area of the inside diameter, depending on the thickness.

Coils
Select coils or cut-length sheets according to shear and fabrication conditions. The selection of coils will effectively improve product yield by allowing continuous and automated operation. In the case of coils, however, some defective parts may unavoidably be included because their removal, based on inspection, is impossible, for which due acknowledgement is required.

Dimensional Accuracy (Thickness, Width and Length)

Dimensional accuracy of thickness, width and length is guaranteed within the range of sizes described in this catalog. However, depending on the conditions under which finished products are to be applied, there are cases that require strict accuracy with respect to the precision assembly of the finished products and to the dimensional accuracy of the parts. In such cases, prior consultation is recommended to decide the dimensional accuracy required for the material.

Edge Finish
Specify either mill edges or slit edges according to the application conditions.

Surface Treatment
Select the most suitable surface treatment from among those described in this catalog according to the treatment method after fabrication and the application conditions.

Painting
Because paintability differs depending on the type of paint and the coating method applied, confirmation is required, prior to application, of the paintability employing the paint to be practically used.

Applications, Fabrication Methods and Others

It is requested that as much information as possible be provided pertaining to the intended applications, fabrication methods, and other necessary items. This will allow Nippon Steel to implement material design and quality control that more accurately conform to the application methods and conditions at user plants.

1. This specification covers steel sheet, zinc-coated (galvanized) by the hot-dip process in coils and cut lengths. 2. The product is produced in a number of designations, types, grades, and classes pertaining to chemical composition and typical mechanical properties of the steel sheet which are designed to be compatible with differing application requirements. 3. This specification is applicable to orders in either inch-pound units (as A 653) or SI units (as A 653M). Values in inch-pound and SI units are not necessarily equivalent. Within the text, SI units are shown in brackets. Each system shall be used independently of the other.

The coating designation number is the term by which this product is specified. Because of the many variables and changing conditions that are characteristic of continuous hot-dip coating lines, the zinc coating is not always evenly divided between the two surfaces of a coated sheet; nor is it always evenly distributed from edge to edge. However, the minimum triple-spot average coating weight (mass) on any one side shall not be less than 40% of the single-spot requirement. B As it is an established fact that the atmospheric corrosion resistance of zinc-coated sheet products is a direct function of coating thickness (weight (mass)), the selection of thinner (lighter) coating designations will result in almost linearly reduced corrosion performance of the coating. For example, heavier galvanized coatings perform adequately in bold atmospheric exposure whereas the lighter coatings are often further coated with paint or a similar barrier coating for increased corrosion resistance. Because of this relationship, products carrying the statement meets ASTM A 653/A 653M requirements should also specify the particular coating designation. C International Standard, ISO 3575, continuous hot-dip zinc-coated carbon steel sheet of commercial, lockforming, and drawing qualities contains Z100 and Z200 designations. D No minimum means that there are no established minimum requirements for triple- and single-spot tests. Notes: 1. The coatig thickness may be estimated from the coating weight (mass) by using the information provided in 8.1.3. : 2. The typical mechanical property values presented here are nonmandatory. They are intended solely to provide the purchaser with as much information as possible to make an informed decision on the steel to be specified. Values outside of these ranges are to be expected. The purchaser may negotiate with the supplier if a specific range or a more restrictive range is required for the application. B These typical mechanical properties apply to the full range of steel sheet thicknesses. The yield strength tends to increase and some of the formability values tend to decrease as the sheet thickness decreases.
