Course Content
Physical states of matter: structure and physical properties of gasses, liquids, and solids, Braggs Law, intermolecular forces. Kinetic theory of Gasses: deviation from ideal behavior, Van der Waal equation, distribution of velocities, Boltzmann Distribution Law. Chemical Kinetics rate of reaction, reaction velocity, rate laws, integrated rate law, half life of reaction, determination of order of reaction Chemical Thermodynamics: First Law of Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry. Quantum Chemistry: development of quantum theory, wave mechanics, Schrodinger.

Learning Goals
This course is the first course in the series of physical chemistry courses designed to complete the basic requirements for chemistry major. The course objective is to make a natural sciences graduate ready for high level courses in chemical sciences and biological sciences. The course embarks on some of the essential concepts in physical chemistry required in different branches of chemistry such as Inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and in other sciences such as biology. CHEM 170 along with the other courses in series tries to understand the physical origin of different chemical processes taking place around us. At the end of this course the student will be able to

Distribution of Marks (Tentative)

Assignments 15% Tests / Activities 30% Midterm 10% Final 15% Attendance 5% Lab / Problem Solving 25% Total 100%

Note: Lab safety procedures must be followed when coming to the lab. Students without lab coats are liable to deductions in marks in their lab grades.

Attendance Policy
Students failing to attend all the labs are prone to get F grade in the course. The minimum attendance requirement is 85 % in the lecture and 90% in the lab. If students must miss classes due to a College-approved extracurricular activity, the person responsible for that activity must get permission from the Vice-Rector prior to the activity. The Vice-Rector will then see that the appropriate faculty members are notified of the students' absence. Students will have ten (10) days to make up missed work unless other arrangements are agreed to by the course instructor. Students are required to put their cells on the silent mode during the class and lab timings. Students should carry a scientific calculator for the purpose of calculations rather than using their cell phones. Any student caught on using a cell phone during exam/test will be deemed failed in that exam/test. Students should adhere to the University dress code during the classes as well as in Labs.

Class Environment

Academic Misconduct
According to University Policy (Page 71-72 of Faculty Handbook) Forman Christian College expects its students to meet the highest ethical standards. Academic standards prohibit: Concealing notes during examinations Collusions between students in examinations. Copying the work of another student either with or without that student's knowledge during an exam or outside of class.

Plagiarism The definition for plagiarism includes copying of any kind without giving credit to the source of the information, i.e. representing another's work or ideas as one's own. For example, word for-word copying from published material, "copy and paste" from the internet or other electronic sources, and paraphrasing new ideas without giving proper citation to the quoted or paraphrased work. In addition self plagiarism is prohibited (a student using his/her previously written paper to meet the requirements for another class). 2

Unauthorized cooperation on individually assigned work. Other acts of academic dishonesty.

Students are responsible for others' cheating, i.e. students should not allow others to copy off their papers nor give papers they have written to others to turn in as their own. There must be consequences administered for each act of academic dishonesty. Breaches of academic standards will result in the following censures: First offence: a grade of zero will be assigned to the paper, report, quiz or test. The student's final grade for the class must be reduced by at least one letter grade. Second offence: an automatic dismissal from the course in which the second offence occurred with a resulting final grade of "F". Third offence: the student will be called before an Academic Review Board to show the cause why the College should not suspend him or her. The Vice-Rector will convene such a hearing.
