Responding
The student will learn some Latin American geography and will listen to and analyze Mariachi music.
Materials Needed: Youtube clips, Handouts of instruments and costumes, picture presentations. PACING 4min PERCEPT or SKILL Introduction/ Geography SEQUENTIAL LESSON STEPS Teacher pulls out a map of Latin America. Teacher shows where some Latin American countries are - highlighting Mexico. Ask students if they have ever traveled to a Latin American country? Teacher explains that within each country, very much like America, there are a number of cultures with different languages and types of music. We are only viewing and listening to a very slim selection of music. There is much more to listen to and explore. Teacher asks the students if they know any folk songs in Spanish? or from a Latin American country? Students can share if they like.

Instrumentati Teacher will describe the various instruments found in Mariachi - showing how the on standard set of instruments came to exist. Teacher provides a handout with pictures and names of the instruments.

Mariachi Tradition
Teacher discusses the costumes and traditions of Mariachi. Teacher goes into detail about the influence of the Spanish conquistadores and how the music in Mexico changed dramatically because of it (i.e. what the instruments/music of the indigenous people were and how they were replaced).

Teacher discusses the different styles Mariachi performs based on the different regions it's found in Mexico (i.e. the Son, Jarabe, Corrido, etc.).

Teacher discusses the relationship between dance and Mariachi music. The teacher describes the dance form called Folclorico.
