Driver made daring escape from scene

Post Office employee is left shaken by hijack ordeal
THE driver of a Post Office van hijacked by armed robbers was left shaken by his ordeal, according to the village postmaster.
The incident unfolded outside Scotter Post Office at around 12.30pm yesterday . Robbers forced the driver back into his Transit security van after he had made a delivery to the store at The Green, Scotter. He was made to drive the vehicle and his ordeal continued as he was directed two miles towards woods near Susworth. Police said a white Seat Inca van, which was believed to have been in Scotter before the attack, led them to the woods. This vehicle was bearing false number plates and was stolen from the Rotherham area between March 23 and 25. The Post Office driver made a daring escape from the Post Office security van while the armed robbers, one of whom had a firearm, attempted to open some cash boxes. Uninjured, the postal driver managed to run free and flag down a motorist who took him back to Scotter Post Office, where he reported the attack to police. Scotter Postmaster, Grahame Wroot, said: Before we knew anything about the attack the delivery man was back in the shop after the incident and he reported what had happened. You dont expect something like this to happen but you should always be on your guard.

Because we were inside we didnt know what was going on. The driver was shook up. He thought the worst was going to happen. Whatever went on with them he wasnt happy about it and he managed to get away . Thankfully everybody is fine. DS Paul Myers, of Lincolnshire Police, said: Witnesses in the village have reported a white vehicle parked in the area near the post office before the incident took place and we would like to hear from anyone who has any information about this. Following the incident, the post office was cordoned off for two hours to allow police to carry out their investigations. It reopened later. The post office security van was found by police in the woods, off Susworth Road, and the Seat Inca was found by police under the River Trent bridge on the M180. Both vehicles were examined at the locations by scene of crime officers. Scotter resident, John Burtenshaw, of Dar Beck Road, said: I wouldnt expect anything like this to happen in Scotter. The culprit must have looked at what the driver does every day . A Post Office spokesman said: We are working closely with police to investigate an incident where an amount of cash was stolen when a Post Office vehicle was stolen.

Although shaken there were no injuries and the vehicle has been recovered. News of the incident broke on www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk yesterday . Police investigating the robbery are searching for two males. Information to Lincolnshire Police on 01522 882222 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111.
