Farnborough Police Safer Neighbourhood Team Monthly Newsletter

A ug u s t
Introduction and Local news Welcome to the August Farnborough Safer Neighbourhood Team Newsletter. There have again been some fundamental changes to the team this month. Inspector Justin BROWNE leaves to work at Aldershot as the targeted Patrol Inspector, Inspector Olga VENNER replaces him as the new team leader. PS Jamie OBRIEN joins to assist in the supervision of the team. PC David CARPENTER joins beat 1- Empress. PCSO Matthew TULETT joins beat 7 Knellwood but PC Dave MCDONALD leaves for a short period to join a newly formed SNT proactive team targeting burglary and car crime offenders. Burglaries Increase Farnborough is still suffering from high numbers of house burglaries and thefts from vehicles. In almost every case the victim left their windows and doors open for the thief to just walk in while they were in bed! Farnborough SNT with our colleagues in CID, DCID and TPT have made several arrests of persons responsible for some of these crimes but there are others out there.. The message is therefore short & sweet Lock your doors and windows when you go out or go to bed. Do not leave house and car keys near the letterbox to be fished out? Do not leave valuables on show. Either in the house or car - Remove or hide your SatNavs, designer sunglasses, purses wallets, mobiles, coats, bags and even parking change from your vehicle. Whats in your Jewellery Box? Jewellery is very easy to dispose of these days; there are endless internet companies who will send a prepaid bag - no questions asked for gold, jewels, watches, mobiles almost anything! If you are burgled the thief will not care if its your Mums old wedding ring, your Dads gold watch, Granddads medals, Grandmas silver broach. Irreplaceable & sentimental items to you are just an easy source of cash. Buy a small safe, bolt it to a solid floor. If you cant afford a safe, box up the items and hide them in the loft or other safe place. Dont leave them in the jewellery box in the bedroom! If you do nothing else, please photograph and add the pictures to http://www.immobilise.com now, its FREE! All Police Forces in England and Wales use it and it is your best chance of being reunited with your stolen goods.

EMPRESS & TOWN CENTRE WARD - Your SNT team is PC Rob Dunster, PC David Carpenter and PCSO James Charlton. Firstly - We would like to welcome PC David Carpenter to the Empress and Town Centre Ward. Burglary. We did have a spate of Burglaries where the offender was gaining access to properties through insecure doors and windows and then taking items. The offender was caught a week later and the offender admitted to also carrying out these Burglaries. Again these Burglaries could have been prevented by making sure the properties were secure. Lock It or Lose It! PC Dunster We have also had a Burglary where an offender has forced entry to the rear of the property and then searched the house for the keys to the vehicle parked on the driveway which they have then stolen. Please try and keep your car and house keys out of sight from windows and doors and in a safe place. Theft from Motor Vehicle. We have had three Thefts from vehicles in the month of August. On one incident a vehicle window was smashed to gain entry and on the other two incidents the vehicles were left insecure. In all three incidents electric items were stolen like a Laptop, Sat Navs and a Mobile Phone. Please prevent yourself from becoming a victim of this type of crime by securing your vehicle and making sure it is locked, do not leave items or any valuable items on show in your vehicle. Lock It or Lose It! PCSO Charlton Theft of Pedal Cycle. There has been another spate of Cycle Thefts in the Town Centre and Empress Ward area. A large number of bikes stolen do not have strong enough locks and are easily cut through like coil locks. We recommend that you use nothing less than a D-Lock. As I have said before we are currently selling Kryptonite Silver Secure D-Locks for 20 (RRP 40) so if you would like to obtain one then please contact us on farnborough.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk.'

CHERRYWOOD WARD - Your SNT team is PC Mark Ranola, PC Ian Stewardson, PCSO Lynn Anderson, PCSO Gordon Pengilley and PCSO Rai. We have seen a couple of burglaries on the beat this month; a male has been arrested for both of these and is currently in Police custody. We have also had a few vehicles with wing mirrors being damaged items taken from parked cars, please be reminded to tuck in your wing mirrors when parking your vehicle and please do not leave valuables on display. On a good note, whilst the youths have been enjoying the summer holidays we have had fewer reports of nuisance youths than this time last year. The parks in general have been kept free of persons drinking due to our regular patrols especially Friday and Saturday nights.

COVE & SOUTHWOOD WARD - Your SNT team is PCSO Michelle Curtis. Attempt 'Vamoose' (Car Key burglary) - Southwood Three males were disturbed in the early hours of the morning attempting to gain entry via a letterbox. We believe that they were after vehicle keys. Investigations are continuing but please note the following advice: Where possible, park your car in a garage. If you can't park your car in a garage, park your car in a well-lit area either on your driveway, or on the road under a street lamp. Lock all car windows and doors. Make sure that your vehicle is properly dead-locked and that the alarm and immobiliser is fully activated. If your car does not already have an alarm or immobiliser, consider having a Thatcham approved product fitted. PCSO Curtis Keep your car keys away from any windows and doors to prevent them from being "fished" through letterboxes, or seen by opportunist thieves. However, make sure you know where they are in case of fire. Consider installing a letterbox deflector. Ensure that your front door is locked correctly (lift handle and turn key if UPVC door). If keys have been taken, change car locks immediately. Crime Prevention Events at Morrisons Michelle will be in Morrisons at Southwood on 11th Oct and 6th Dec from 10am to 2pm on both days and will be available to chat to if you have any issues concerning your local area. She will also be on hand to offer crime prevention advice and keep you up to date with local issues in Cove and Southwood. Following a recent meeting at the store, SNT will be using the site more often in future and will use the cafe area from time to time to sit and work in to give residents more access to their local beat officer following the loss of the beat office at the football pavilion. School patrols - Tower Hill School, Fowler Road Working closely with the enforcement officers at the council, Michelle has some planned patrols in place in Fowler Road over the next couple of months to try and educate drivers who park too closely to the school gates. This makes it dangerous when the children are coming out of the school and we aim to speak to drivers about the dangers of this.

FERNHILL WARD - Your SNT team is PC Martin Cole and PCSO Mitch While. Priorities Parking issues outside Guillemont - No reported parking issues during summer holidays. Speeding Sandy Lane - 26/08/2013, Speed enforcement carried out by Roads Policing Unit. 4 vehicles stopped and 3 drivers offered education courses. Neighbourhood watch canvassing will be starting next week to establish a scheme in Sandy Lane, Farnborough. If you live in the Fernhill Area and wish to join a neighbourhood watch scheme then please get in contact. Upcoming events in September Fox Lane Community Action Day - Friday 27th Sep 2013, between 13:00-17:00 hrs. The event is currently in the process of being organised by First Wessex Housing. Police, Fire Service, Environmental Health and First Wessex representatives should all be attending. The event will take place on the Fox Lane Estate. KNELLWOOD & ST MARKS WARD - Your SNT team is PC David McDonald, PCSO Jenni Lawrence and PCSO Matthew Tullet. Welcome to PCSO Matt Tulett, who has recently joined the Knellwood and St Marks team. He is very friendly, so if you see him out and about feel free to stop him and say 'Hello'. There have been a number of thefts of bicycles in the last month. The majority of these bicycles have simply been left unlocked and unattended by their owner. The remaining bicycles were locked with a relatively flimsy lock, or simply locked to itself. Our recommendation is to always lock up your bikes with a sturdy 'D-lock', and lock it to an immovable object so that an offender can not simply bike the bike up and walk away with it. Kryptonite D-locks are still available from the police for 20 instead of the RRP of 40. Each lock comes with up to 800 cover for your bike if the bike is stolen with the lock being correctly used. If you would like one of these please email farnborough.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk A burglary occurred in Rectory Road, though luckily offenders were scared off by a house alarm and neighbours who went to see what was happening. Nothing was take from the address. The incident occurred on the 23rd August 2013 between 21.00hrs and 21.30hrs, if you saw anything please call 101 and quote 44130319281. PCSO Tulett

ST JOHNS WARD - Your SNT team is PC Lee Jeffers and PCSO Lisa Attwood. The Pyestock Estate: On reviewing ASB reports for the school summer holiday 2013 period it appears that reports of incidents around the Pyestock Estate have remained low with 10 ASB reports in July and 5 ASB reports in August. Of these fifteen ASB reports, 6 calls related to a neighbour dispute in Northcott Gardens, which has now been resolved with police and Sentinel Housing intervention, 3 calls related to music related nuisance, 4 calls related to children causing nuisance whilst playing in the street and the 2 other calls were miscellaneous incidents. The five youths currently on ABCs on the Pyestock Estate have kept to their agreed conditions and are soon to be reviewed for completion. A multi agency review meeting of the Pyestock Youth Project has been arranged for 23rd September 2013, where the installation of a new youth / community base will be discussed. Neighbourhood Watch: St. Johns Neighbourhood Watch currently has 49 active schemes with a total of 1290 households being members. We have now located new coordinators for 3 schemes in The Birches, Minley Road and Victoria Gardens. At this time we have been unable to locate a new coordinator for Swale Road and so this watch has been temporarily deactivated pending canvassing of all residents. Canvassing for new NHW schemes is continuing to take place in Pinewood Crescent, Harvey Road, Poplars Close and Hornbeam Close.

PC Jeffers

Trunk Road: Our Speedwatch volunteers have to date conducted five operations on Trunk Road, checking the speeds of 987 vehicles and identifying only 1 vehicle travelling above the speed limit at an enforcement speed The Technical Officer at The Traffic Management Office, Rushmoor Borough Council has stated that the Local Authority is currently working on a scheme for the Trunk Road area within the current financial year and they will review the roundabout and its effectiveness as part of that scheme.

Vehicle Crime There have been a number of vehicle related reports to police over the last month including 2 thefts of vehicles and 3 thefts from vehicles. One of the stolen vehicles has been recovered nearby but unfortunately the other is still outstanding at this time while various items have been stolen during the thefts from. Please ensure all vehicles are locked and secure when leaving them unattended, criminals will look for the easy option. Anti Social behaviour During late duty patrols a group of youths were found in Blunden Hall area that had the potential to cause excessive noise and a nuisance. Youths engaged with and moved on from the area with no further reports or issues. Generally Anti Social behaviour in the street has come down in the ward and high visibility patrols in the appropriate areas will continue. PCSO CollinsHardman
