Just some Facts and Suggestions

Sept 2013 Did you know ?

Tanzania Journal Issue 42

The School year in Tanzania runs from January to December with the months of April, August and December off. Thus, children graduate from their grade in November and move to the next higher grade in January. The grading scale is very different from ours with test scores of 30 generally considered passing. Our goal is not to have just passers but rather high achievers, equipped to serve their Community. The children rarely take books home, so if you're considering giving your child a backpack, make it a small sports bag-type bag. Having things monogrammed with your child's name sounds like such a great idea, but remember that the children are very likely to share whatever they get, or even give it to a younger sibling at some point, so a name might not be the best thing to have on the item. While they are learning English at school, for most of the children this is their 3rd language. Imagine reading in your 3rd language, which most Americans don't even have! If you send your child a book or Bible, go down at least a grade level or more in level of difficulty from the child's age and grade level.

Public schools may have more than 75 children per teacher we try to maintain our PUNCHMI school at 30 students per class. Concerned teachers with time for students are our greatest asset. At PUNCHMI Christian School we provide a Headmaster and thirteen teachers. We also have cooks, grounds keepers, and guards. (Can you imagine cooking over a wood/charcoal fire for 300 students and staff two meals a day) In serving the widows and community ministries we also have a social worker and two pre-school teachers. For a total paid Staff of 37 committed individuals all enabled by Project Child donations. Asante Sana Bwana
