CONTEXT: Transpower sits at the centre of the New Zealand electricity industry and is responsible for maintaining security of supply. It is the owner of the National Grid which transmits electricity around the country. It is also the system operator, responsible for cocoordinating and managing the transmission of electricity across the National Grid. The National Grid is New Zealands energy backbone and underpins and sustains the countrys economic and social activity. Transpower is a State-Owned Enterprise. The Minister for State-Owned Enterprises and the Minister of Finance are its shareholders, on behalf of all New Zealanders In addition, Transpower is responsible for working with the industry regulator, the Electricity Commission, to ensure there is appropriate investment in the National Grid to meet New Zealands needs.

TEAM PURPOSE: The team of graduates on Transpowers Graduate Development Programme are responsible for providing peer support to other members on the graduate programme and extend this support to those coming through as Transpower undergraduates where required. Collectively the team are ambassadors, responsible for promoting the positive reputation of Transpower whilst on placements both internal and external. ROLE PURPOSE: This position exists to provide, at the end of training, a trained graduate engineer having a good understanding of power system principles, the ability to extend his/her university knowledge and apply theoretical concepts to power systems management, an overall appreciation of the electricity supply industry, and the ability to develop additional competencies in a specific area of the industry. JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: Areas of Accountability: 1. Rotation Programme - Learning Objectives Pursue all graduate learning objectives provided for each training placement and demonstrate the learning gained in the following areas: Adequate exposure to power system related issues including process Specific training (on the job) on power system analysis, design, operation, construction and maintenance Ability to produce effective and efficient presentations and report writing Display appropriate knowledge of policies, codes, (assets and environmental standards, system operation and security) Knowledge of planning and investment justification tools and methods Ability to model and analyse power systems and their disturbances Knowledge of contract management, inspection and testing Knowledge of wholesale market dispatch tools Knowledge of generation plant operation and wholesale market trading Knowledge of distribution network design, operation and maintenance Knowledge of typical customer interaction issues and relationship management A general overall understanding of the processes within Transpower. This list is not exhaustive but rather indicative of the training that will take place. 2. Rotation Programme People Management Provide support to managers and staff of Transpower groups and external companies with which the graduate is placed through: Ensure alignment of the groups or companys functions with all other operations of the business and contribute effectively to other groups support processes and initiatives, keeping others informed of activities and issues. 3. Safety and Health A. Follow established work procedures to promote and maintain safety, while controlling environmental impacts and complying with legislative responsibilities. B. Ensure Safety and Health practices are adhered to, and staff safety is maintained in all aspects of summer placement work.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Knowledge and Experience: Good understanding of power system principles is essential for this role Good use of computer based tools and applications are required as is development of analytical skills. A good understanding of power system design, construction, operation and maintenance, static and dynamic modelling of power systems, the behaviour of power system plant and equipment is service, and the changing of the condition of these assets over time is desirable Knowledge of the New Zealand electricity supply industry is beneficial. Qualifications: A relevant tertiary qualification is required for this role.
