SCR
Associated with wet trees. Commonly used on fixed P/L, FPSOs, and TLPs Adopted firstly to the Auger platform with 2860ft length in the GOM, 1993 Cost effective alternative for oil and gas export and for water injection lines on deepwater fields Self-compensated for the heave movement Sensitive to waves and current Fatigue damage induced by VIVs (vortex-induced vibrations) can be fatal to the riser Suppression devices such as helical strakes and fairing need to reduce the vibrations

Vortex Induced Vibration

Many engineering structures are bluff structures. Bluff structure have the flow separate from a large section of the structure.
Inertia force Friction force
Reynolds Number Describe Strouhal Number Flow around a cylinder

In subcritical flow, the Strouhal number St=0.2 =

Vortex shedding (Flow) Eigenfrequency for the structure (Structure)

S tU = fv = fn D
Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) occur

U 1 = St f n D

Touch Down Zone

Touchdown Zone-The zone at which the SCR contacts the seabed, often proves to be a spot where bending stresses are largest and therefore a critical location for fatigue.
