System Overview
The introduction of Gasoline Direct Injection and SemiAutomatic Shifting accounts for a new and forward-looking Formula 3 system for 2013/2014/2015. Based on the experience of the last periods, a new generation of engine control and data acquisition units solely designed for motorsport applications has been combined with an improved layout of the previous components. The system features the ECU, data logger, a complete steering wheel with display, ignition coils, injectors, high pressure fuel pump, alternator and sensors. It can be chosen in between a system with paddle shift or without.

Damper travel and steering angle potentiometers are equipped with military connectors providing improved durability during car rebuilds.

Data Acquisition

The C 60 Data Logger is a compact and light weight component with military spec connectors. It allows for synchronized acquisition of engine data from the ECU, and chassis data from up to 26 analogue and 4 digital input channels. Additional input devices can be connected via Ethernet and CAN buses. Recorded data from the internal 2 GB flash memory can be downloaded via high speed Ethernet.

Engine Control Unit

The MS 5.8 engine control unit is a Simulink-based motorsport ECU with all assets for the future of the Formula 3 Series, including support for Gasoline Direct Injection and a Paddleshift System. Even though the software as a whole is certainly customised for the series, off-the-shelf software solutions can be used for the required functionality. This also includes the closed loop lambda- and knock-control, which have been proven in many years of Formula 3 racing. The ECU features military spec connectors and a robust housing for high end motorsport application. In addition, the Simulink development environment, the FPGA design, and the Ethernet calibration interface are forward-looking features for the new period. Bosch Motorsport has a lot of experience with GDI systems, from high pressure pumps to injectors, injector design, and spray targeting. The high pressure pump HDP 5 can build up a rail pressure of up to 200 bar and has an integrated demand control valve for metering the amount of fuel supplied into the high pressure fuel system. Therefore, no fuel return line into the tank is needed and a high efficiency can be achieved. Variations in the number of cam lobes and cam lifts allow different flow requirements to be addressed. The HPI 5 driver box is able to put out specific peak and hold signals to the demand valve of the high pressure pump and the HDEV 5 injectors. A complete spray targeting can be ordered by the engine manufacturer to find a suitable injector spray layout. The design is based on detailed CAD data and engine specifications.

For displaying engine/chassis data in the car, we offer a complete steering wheel with display and optional paddles for shift requests. The Formula Steering Wheel (FSW) features a multicolour TFT display, 6 buttons for various purposes, and 2 optional paddles for shift request.

Display / Steering Wheel

Gearbox / Shifting

For the optional semi-automatic shifting, we offer a Pneumatic Paddleshift System (PPS). This system comprises a combined gearbox control / compressor unit with reservoir, as well as actuators and pneumatic valves. For cars that are not equipped with a Paddleshift System, we offer a gearshift sensor (GSS-M) to enable Flatshifting and a Downshift Lock Function featured in the ECU software and wiring harness. The MS 5.8 ECU provides the necessary signals to a full functionality ADR by means of the CAN bus. A compatible connection for the ADR is included in the harness. The necessary wiring will be added on the Bosch diagnosis connector in order to use it as the download connector for the ADR. The remote status light is added on the Dashboard in order to make it visible even when the driver is in the cockpit.

Set-up and Calibration

Like in the recent years, we had the possibility to select from a wide range of economical and established Bosch series production parts where it is possible. Components of the F3 car that have to meet even higher requirements are equipped with specific motorsport parts. Engine speed sensing is exclusively performed according to the well-tried method using an inductive sensor in combination with 60-2 tooth wheel for crankshaft angle and a Hall-effect sensor for cylinder 1 recognition at the camshaft. Temperature measurement is carried out using Bosch series production parts. These are NTC sensors except exhaust temperature, which uses a thermocouple sensor. Pressure measurement is made by means of amplified sensors.

Sensors/Actuators

The Windows based application tool RaceCon is used for measuring data, calibrating parameters, and configuring the data acquisition. It features a modern user interface and is has been developed for easy use. It will be free of charge for the F3 teams, whereas the functionality is strictly limited to prevent calibration changes that are not permitted for teams. Data is archived and analysed with WinDarab. This is a comprehensive Windows based software tool that provides data analysis functions to both the team and engine builder. An optional user-defined partition of memory allows the team and engine builder to have separate acquisition tables each recording parameters of interest, sharing channels where appropriate. The separate data files can be archived and analysed independently. In the basis system, a free version of WinDarab including the required features for basic data analysis will be offered. The minimum PC requirements are: IBM PC Pentium/AMD Athlon compatible, min. 1.6 GHz Min. 2 GB RAM Min. 1 GB free hard disc space VGA/WGA monitor (min. 1,024 x 768) Windows XP 32 SP3 or later version

This sensor is designed for incremental measurement of rotational speed (e.g. crankshaft or wheelspeed). The inductive sensor consists of a bar magnet with a soft magnetic pole pin supporting an induction coil with two connections. Every time a ferromagnetic ring gear turns past this sensor, it generates a voltage in the coil which is directly proportional to the periodic variation in the magnetic flux. The rotational speed is reflected on a periodic interval between the voltages zero transition points. It is available in a DR-25 sleeve with various connector options. The main benefit of this sensor is the combination of a high quality production part and robust, compact design.

Installation Notes
This lambda sensor operates only in combination with a special LSUIC, used in most Bosch Motorsport ECUs and lambda control units like LT4. Youll find this unit and more on our homepage at Accessories/ Expansion Modules. The lambda sensor should be installed at point which permits the measurement of a representative exhaust-gas mixture, which does not exceed the maximum permissible temperature. Install at a point where the gas is as hot as possible. Observe the maximum permissible temperature. As far as possible install the sensor vertically (wire upwards). The sensor is not to be fitted near to the exhaust pipe outlet, so that the influence of the outside air can be ruled out. The exhaust-gas passage opposite the sensor must be free of leaks in order to avoid the effects of leak-air. Protect the sensor against condensation water. The sensor is not to be painted, nor is wax to be applied or any other forms of treatment. Use only the recommended grease for lubricating the thread. Please find further application hints in the offer drawing at our homepage.

Please note: UA is not an output signal of the lambda sensor, but the output of the evaluation circuit. Only IP correlates with the oxygen content of the exhaust gas. Amplification factor v=17 is typically used for lean applications (lambda>1), amplification factor v=8 is typically used for rich applications (lambda<1).

This sensor is used for detecting structural born vibrations in spark ignition engines due to uncontrolled combustion. This sensor is suitable for operation in extreme conditions. Due to the inertia of the seismic mass, the sensor moves in correlation to the engine block vibration; this motion results in a compressive force which is converted into a voltage signal via a piezoceramic sensor element. As a result, upper and lower voltage thresholds can be defined directly correlating to an acceleration magnitude. The main benefits of this sensor are its robust mechanical design, compact housing and precise determination of structure-related noise. The small packaging is accomplished by integrating the connector directly to the sensor.

Installation Notes
The KS-P can be connected to all Bosch Motorsport ECUs featuring knock control The sensor must rest directly on the brass compression sleeve during operation. To ensure low-resonance coupling of the sensor to the measurement location, the contact surface must be clean and properly machined to provide a secure flush mounting. The sensor wire is to be routed such that no resonance vibration can occur. Please find further application hints in the offer drawing at our homepage.

The HDEV 5.2 is a high pressure injector, which is developed to be used as a port or a direct injector. The function of the HDEV 5.2 is both to meter out the fuel and to obtain a well-defined mixture of fuel and air. It is an inward opening solenoid injector which is optimized regarding very short opening and closing times which ensures a very stable linearity at short injection times. The benefit of this injector is a high spray variability concerning spray angle and spray shape. Also the flow rate can be defined in a big range.

Installation Notes
The injector has to be supplied by a Bosch Motorsport Power Stage Unit (e.g. HPI 5 or HPI 1.16).

The HDP 5 FCV is a compact high pressure single piston pump. The design allows achieving a big delivery volume as well as high efficiency, as needed in motorsport applications. Modifications in the number of cam lobes and cam lifts allow different flow requirements to be addressed. The HDP 5 FCV is equipped with an integrated demand control for metering the amount of fuel supplied into the high pressure fuel system and an overpressure relief valve to limit the maximum fuel pressure. By metering the fuel into the high pressure system, this variation does not require a fuel return line into the fuel tank.

3,400 g 55 A Clockwise rotation Installation Notes

An external cooling can contribute to increase the performance. It will only be effective if the incoming air is 30Kelvin cooler than the ambient air. Otherwise, the restriction of air flow will negate any cooling benefits. If these conditions are met, the cooling air should be distributed over the center axis at the rear of the alternator for optimal cooling. The alternator fans are not able to generate negative pressure. It is possible to use external blower to support the alternator. Debris at alternator cooling area can reduce cooling effect. This could also shorten the alternator service life. Installation without rubber mounting.

This alternator is modified for motorsports demand and splash protected. The direction of rotation is clockwise.

This sensor is specifically designed for the use with motorcycle applications. The sensor measures the relative force during gear shifting directly relaying data to the ECU in order to gain max power from rapid up or down shifting. An electronic circuit composed of a precise strain gauge and an integrated amplifier supplies a force-dependent output signal. As soon as this signal exceeds a certain threshold, the ignition and injection can be adjusted automatically according to the individual ECU application. The carbon fiber housing achieves excellent protection for the electronics and reduces the overall weight of the sensor. The main features and benefits of this sensor are its small dimensions, its minimal weight, its precise temperature compensation and its combination of high quality production and robust design with a motorsport spec connector.

This sensor is designed to measure the physical effects of yawing, lateral and longitudinal acceleration. In order to achieve this, the sensor features both a measuring element for yaw rate and two for acceleration, with one appropriate integrated circuit. A rotation around the third orthogonal axis, a yaw rate, creates a Coriolis force on the accelerometers, which is detected by the element. Apart from the measuring element for yaw rate, a pure surface micro machined measuring element for acceleration is utilized to measure the vehicles lateral and longitudinal acceleration. This enables a very precise application. The main feature and benefit of this sensor is its wide measuring range, the standardized 1 Mbaud/s CAN-signal output and the combination of high quality production part and robust design.
