W ILLIAM H . ANDERSON, OF RIVERSIDE, C ALIF ORNIA.
TREADLE-PUMP.
SPEC IF IC ATION forming p art of Letters Patent No. 439,992, dated November 4, 1890.
Ap p lic ation filed J anu ary 6 , 1890. Serial No. 336 ,102. (No model.)
To all whom it may c onc ern:
' Be it known that I, W ILLIAM H . ANDERSON,
a c itiz en of the United States , res iding at
Rivers ide, in the c ou nty of San Bernardino,
and State of C alifornia, have invented c er
tain new and u s efu l Imp rovements in Treadle
Pu mp s , of whic h the following is a s p ec i? c a
tion.
My invention relates to imp rovements in
treadle-p u mp s ; and it c ons is ts in c ertain novel
featu res , hereinafter des c ribed and c laimed.
In the ac c omp any ing drawing s , F ig u re l is
a p ers p ec tive View of a p u mp p rovided with
my imp rovements . F ig . 2 is a vertic al c ros s
s ec tion of the treadle, and F ig . 3 is a s ide ele
vation of the walking -beam or treadle.
Referring to the drawing s by letter, B des
ig nates a s tandard, having a bifu rc ated u p p er
end, in and to whic h the walking ~beam or
treadle O is p ivoted by a trans vers e bolt or
p ivot-p in A, as s hown. -
D des ig nates s hoes or foot-res ts , whic h are
s wiveled to the u p p er s ides of the walking
beam at or near the ends of the s ame, s o as to
be maintained in a horiz ontal p os ition at all
times . Thes e s hoes or r' es ts rec eive the feet of
the op erator when the devic e is in u s e. The
walking -beam or c ros s -bar is p rovided at or
near its ends with the long itu dinal s lots F ,
the u p p er and lower edg es of whic h are c on
vex . H alf-p u lley s X are ? tted in thes e s lots ,
and are held therein by ax les or p ivot-p ins R,
to the ends of whic h I p ivot the u p p er ends
of the p is ton-rods H , as s hown.
The c ons tru c tion and arrang ement of the
s everal p arts of the devic e being thu s made
known, the op eration and advantag es of the
s ame will be readily u nders tood. '
The op erator s tands u p on the walking
beam with his feet in the s hoes D, and by
throwing his weig ht alternately u p on the op
p os ite s hoes vibrates the walking -beam or
treadle, and thereby reeip roc ates the p is tons
and s o op erates the p u mp .
It will be notic ed that the arrang ement and
c ons tru c tion s hown and des c ribed p rovides a

devic e whic h c an be eas ily and rap idly op er- -
ated, and in whic h the fric tion will be redu c ed
to a minimu m, the rollers s erving not only to
redu c e the fric tion, bu t als o moving from end
to end of the s lots to overc ome the tendenc y

of the p is ton~rods to bind u p on the walking - _
beam or other p arts .
By emp loy ing half-p u lley s I am enabled to
make the walls of the s lots c onvex , thu s p re
. venting the p u lley s moving ' laterally , and c on
s eq u ently obviating twis ting of the p is ton
rods or other p arts . The half-rollers are ? tted
in the s lots from op p os ite s ides , as will be
readily u nders tood.
H aving thu s des c ribed my invention, whatI
c laim, and des ire to s ec u re by Letters Patent,
1s '
The c ombination of the walking -beam hav
ing long itu dinal s lots in its ends , s aid s lots
having c onvex walls , the half-rollers ? tted in
s aid s lots from the op p os ite s ides of the s ame,
the p is ton-rods p ivoted to the ax les of' the
rollers , and the s hoes s wiveled on the u p p er
s ide of the walking -beam, as s p ec i? ed.
In witnes s whereof I have hereu nto s et my
my hand and s eal.
