Technical Writing Document... 9
This is an excerpt from a project I did during my technical writing class in which I
wrote an in-depth explanation of the workplace culture you could expect to find in the
computer science community. The purpose of this project was to learn about the
organizational culture of what could potentially be my future career, and how that culture
will affect the styles and genres of writing used in that career.

Opioid Overdose
College is a great time to experiment with many things. One of these things for many of your peers is drug use.
The opioid drug class includes drugs such as heroin, morphine, oxycodone (Oxycontin), methadone,
hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine, and many other prescription pain medications. The United States has been
experiencing what is considered an epidemic of prescription drug abuse for many years now. Between the years
1999-2008 prescription opioid overdose was responsible for more deaths than both heroin and cocaine
overdoses combined. In the event that one of your friends was overdosing on prescription opioids or heroin, do
you know what to do?
Parts or Materials needed: A telephone and Naloxone
Safety Information: Many harm reduction programs throughout the US will give out Naloxone, but if there are
not any near you Naloxone can also be prescribed by a trusted physician or ordered by a pharmacy. Anyone can
acquire or administer Naloxone, it is administered through either an intranasal spray or intramuscular injection.
Naloxone helps to wake the person up and keep them breathing until medical professionals have arrived. Any
open vials of Naloxone should be disposed of 6 hours after being opened.
Steps
1. Rub to wake-With your knuckles rub the persons sternum to try and get them to breathe and wake up.
2. Call 911-Give the operator the address and location of the person as well as letting them know that the
person is not breathing. When medical professionals arrive let them know what drugs the person took in
you know and whether you administered Naloxone
3. Give them mouth to mouth- In the event that they stop breathing entirely put the person on their back
and pull their chin forward to keep the airway open; put one hand on the chin and tilt their head back
while pinching their nose to keep it closed.
4. Administer Naloxone-For intranasal: Squirt half the vial into each nostril, make a fine mist by pushing
the applicator fast. For injectable: Always start injections from a new vial Inject into the arm or upper
part of thigh muscle one cc at a time.
5. Keep them breathing- Check to make sure they are breathing and continue mouth to mouth if they
cannot breathe on their own. Administer another dose of Naloxone if they cannot wake up or are not
breathing more than ten breaths per minute.
6. Position the person to lay on their side- In the event that the person vomits, this position will make it so
the person cannot inhale their vomit.
7. Follow the medical professionals advice- Once they arrive they may think the person that has overdosed
should go to the Emergency Room, make sure they follow the advice of the professional.
Overdoses can be a scary experience but they are a common occurrence. If you follow the directions above you
could help save a life!
Workplace Culture
Organizational culture in the tech industry is a very unique and intriguing thing. The tech
industry is highly successful and is often considered unmatchable in both innovation
and productivity. It is common for high-tech companies to appear casual, and although
in many ways they are, these companies are known for getting things done quickly.
When working in this industry you can expect aggressive deadlines and long hours. The
employees are highly dedicated and are loyal to both their work and coworkers. The
industry has an immensely mobile talent base, this allows for some concepts to be
shared openly between other companies in the industry and the establishment of
impending technology. Since the industry is known for getting things done quickly it is
not surprising that many companies are risk takers. These companies understand that it
is better to have a product out than to have it perfect. They also realize that success is
often produced from failure. They know that most issues can be dealt with by having
confidence in their employees, effort, and appropriate methods.
The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world thats changing really quickly,
the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks. - Mark Zuckerberg,
CEO of Facebook
Employee Initiative
Most companies recognize developers as professionals and give the proper latitude
within their areas of expertise to implement a solution. Good cultures should always
encourage individual initiative but exactly how much latitude an employee gets generally
depends on their level of experience and expertise.
Division of power
Albeit there is someone running as the head of the organization, successful companies
in the computer science industry have strayed away from giving them all of the power.
Old planning and development methodologies can create adversarial environments
between developers and management because of the unrealistic believe that
technology development can be completely planned out in advance. This approach is
not only inefficient but creates stressful work environments that take away the
enjoyment of building and delivering great products. Luckily the agile development
movement is improving this situation but currently the best methodologies to remedy
this are Lean and Kanban.
Gender Inequality
Less than one in ten companies can claim that a third of their engineers are women.
Women are also more likely to leave the industry as compared to their male
counterparts. This has always been an issue present in the tech industry but as it is now
being openly addressed we may see a turning point in the near future. Many women in
the industry feel as if they have a more difficult time earning their peers respect. It is
believed that gender and ethnic diversity enhances innovation and decision making.
With any hope inequality for women in this industry will eventually come to an end.
