Project Title: An assessment of Building Loading in Mining Subsidence Area Taking into Account the
Soil Structure Interaction Phenomena
Work: Parametric study of the soil structure interaction phenomena was carried out using numerical
modelling based on the finite element method. The work was intended to produce results which would
be quite useful in improving upon the existing building codes in the Lorrain area which was highly
prone to mining subsidence.
Achievements: Successful in developing an empirical equation for predicting the load on a building
foundation as a result of mining subsidence with various parameters of the soil and the structure. A
scientific paper based on this work would be submitted in one of the journals of ASCE.

Finite Element Analysis of Spread Footings on Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Foundations
(Ongoing)
Working on the assessment of ground improvement using geosynthetic reinforced foundations. The work
involves validating the finite element model for foundations and then using the model to analyze
improvement in bearing capacity of reinforced foundations under isolated and closely spaced footings with
different number and depth of the geosynthetic reinforcing layers.
Geological survey and Mapping
(Dec 05)
Attended geological survey camp at Chitrakoot and surveying and mapping camp at Dehradun in December
2005. First part of the camp involved surveying rock deposits and the second part consisted of surveying and
plotting a map of an area using theodolites, total station, Global Positioning System and plane table mapping.
