Dear Members of the Hull High School Community,

WOW! Although the holiday season comes the same time each year and, in the words of our
Superintendent of Schools, its not like you cant predict when it will be here, it still seems to
creep up on me each year. I fully acknowledge that I am a Christmas Geek and love
everything about the season. I also love all of the End of the Year hoopla the Best of
and Worst of... lists, the articles about the year in review and the People of the Year issues of
magazines. I think that part of the reason for this is that as a former teacher of history, I enjoy
taking a look at the events of the past while thinking about how those events impact the present
and our future.
When I look back at the Hull High School communitys 2014 I am proud to say that we had
another successful year. The graduating Class of 2014 had 71 members who received diplomas
and almost 80% of those students went off to continue his/her education. 2 graduates are now
active members of our armed forces. The Class of 2014 received over $70,000 in local
scholarships thanks to the generosity of our supporters in an out of Hull. We saw our average
SAT scores go back up and our students continued to show above average academic growth as
measured by the MCAS. Several new courses were offered for the first time including Physics
in Literature, The Law in Literature, Journalism, and Public Speaking. The Journalism class
published its first newspaper.
On the co-curricular front, several of our teams made tournament play in 2014, including the
boys basketball and girls soccer teams. Our hockey team started a very successful co-op with
Middleboro and made it into the 2nd round of the state tournament. Our fall cheerleaders won the
South Shore League Championship the first Pirate team in any sport to do so since 2006.
Twelve of our student-athletes qualified to compete in the South Shore All-League track meet
and three qualified to compete in the state track meet. For the third consecutive year Hull
Highs student-athletes and coaches were recognized by the MIAA for their sportsmanship. Our
Theatre Arts program produced three wonderful shows in 2014 Addams Family, Flat Stanley,
Jr., and Oklahoma. Our TALK program continued to educate students about diversity, our Mock
Trial team continued to develop an outstanding program, and PHI kept going with their good
work to help those in need. Our Physics and Stuff Club built two hovercrafts and our yearbook
staff created yet another outstanding edition of The Log.
Our student government continued its tradition of providing fun events for our students while
also making service to the Hull community part of its mission. They ran successful rallies and
dances enjoyed by our students. Together with our National Honor Society, they collected food,
jackets, clothing, toiletries and toys for local charities and service organizations. They
volunteered throughout our community serving meals, painting walls, cleaning the beach and
the bay, and so much more. Even the Art Club got involved and through the creation and sale of

artwork, raised several thousand dollars to buy a pair of shoes for every child living at the Green
Gecko School and Orphanage in Cambodia.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and support of so many. I cant
single out individuals because the list is just too long. But I do need to say thank you to all who
serve our school community:

The amazing teachers and paraprofessionals of HHS who go so far above and beyond
everyday to provide an outstanding education to our students.
The HHS counselors and nurse who work tirelessly to meet the medical, social and
emotional needs of our students.
The office and custodial staff who keep our school running efficiently, cleanly and safely.
The HHS Boosters, PTO, Drama Mamas and Papas, and HASC who raise and then give
us the funds that allow our co-curricular programs to exist and enhance our academic
program in so many ways.
The advisors to our Quiz Show team, Mock Trial team, PHI, TALK, Art Club, Physics
and Stuff Club who donate their time to give these wonderful opportunities to our
students.
The parents of our students who work with us together we do everything we can to ensure
that Hulls young men and women are fully prepared for life after Hull High School.
Most importantly our students who are the reason that Hull High School is an amazing
place of learning, fun, service to others and kindness.

So as 2014 draws to a close and we prepare to welcome 2015 I hope you and your family had
a wonderful holiday season and that 2015 is a year of happiness, peace, prosperity and joy for
your family and for the entire Hull High School community.

Sincerely,

Michael Devine
Principal
