Eastern makes
final PARCC prep

Snow shoveling

Test will be administered

to students from March 913

Voorhees Township was blanketed in white, kids went to school late, and residents had to dig themselves out as a result of the snow that dropped on the town on Monday, Feb. 16. Pictured is resident
Tom Kalick as he works the next day to dig out his driveway.

Eastern Regional High School

is in the final stages of preparing
for the upcoming Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College and Career exam.
According to Robert Cloutier,
director of curriculum, instruction and professional development, the technology department
has been working hard for more
than two years laying the foundation to make the examination possible.
Now, as it is approaching, we
have to make sure that we are prepared in all respects, Cloutier
said.
Next month, the PARCC test
will be administered to all students in New Jersey grades three
through 11, replacing the former
standardized New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge
test for lower grades and the High
School Proficiency Assessment
for those in high school grades
nine through 11.
Two major differences with the
transition to the PARCC test are

students will take the examinations twice a year, once in March

and once in late April or early
May, and the test itself is entirely
computer based.
The test is a result of a group of
20 states, New Jersey included,
that first came together and developed a common core set of
K-12 assessments in math and
language arts with the goal of
preparing students for a career or
college beyond high school.
While multiple states have
since decided to not administer
the PARCC assessment, New Jersey is still scheduled to move forward with the test.
For Eastern, teachers will have
a half-day of in-service on Monday, March 2, during which all
teachers will be trained as test administrators, as many teachers
will be directly administering the
test on the days of the examinations.
The following day, teachers and
students will also run a practice
PARCC testing day for both English and math, using the special

March for Babies at Virtua
panies to participate and lead the
community in making a difference for the health of moms and
babies.
As a health-care professional,
this campaign gives me and Virtua a unique opportunity to help
the community that I love. And as
a mother, I cant think of a more
important cause than our babies, said Lubrano, who will be
asking local businesses for their
support in the coming months.
Premature birth is the leading
cause of newborn death in this
country. One in nine of our babies here in Camden and Burlington counties is born premature,
and thats just not acceptable. It
takes leaders in our community
working together to ensure more
moms have healthy pregnancies.
Residents can sign up at

and
start a team with co-workers, family or friends. The event will be
held this year on April 26 at Virtua Voorhees.

She has taken on the role of 2015

onday, March 2 is going to be

a different kind of day in
public schools throughout
New Jersey. Thats the first day the
long-awaited, and highly-controversial,
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career test will be
administered.
PARCC, as its better known, is the
newest version of the annual standardized test that students have been taking for years. There have always been
debates as to whether standardized
tests do any good, or whether the results provide any useful information.
But the fact is that standardized testing has been around for decades, and
PARCC is just the newest version.
Sure, this version is taken entirely
on a computer, not with a pen and
Scantron, leaving many concerned
about whether students can perform
well. Todays students grew up with
this technology, though, so they should
have no issue adjusting to taking a test
on a computer; it may even be easier
for them.
Sure, this version only measures

performance in math and English,

leaving many concerned that it is taking away instructional time in other
subjects. The SAT has been testing in
only those two subjects for years,
though, and no one seems to have a
problem with that.
Its not just parents who have a problem with PARCC. The New Jersey Education Association launched online
and TV ads last week that, in one spot,
asked emphatically: what are we
doing to our kids?
Well, we are testing them, just like
we have tested them in the past.
Contrary to how this might read, we
are not in favor of PARCC, or standardized testing in general. We agree that
there has to be a better way to judge
students, and teachers, than a national
standardized test. But encouraging
students to not take the test sends the

wrong message, and teaches the wrong

lesson. We shouldnt be teaching our
students that its OK to avoid taking a
test because you dont agree with it.
Should they also say no to homework,
because they dont agree that it properly assesses their learning? Should they
not take a final exam in college because its taken on a computer?
Voicing opinions and concerns and
standing up for what you believe in are
good lessons to teach. But attacking
the schools, which have no choice in
administering the test, and teaching
students that its OK to refuse to take
the test are not the way to approach the
issue. Sometimes in life, we have to do
what we dont want to do and dont
agree with doing.
Take the fight to the legislators who
approved the testing. Lobby them to
change the rules.
While passing PARCC isnt a requirement to graduate high school
now, it will be starting with the class of
2019. And what will you do then prevent students from graduating because
they refused to take a test?

Need a marriage license? Head to Vital Statistics Office

One of the most frequent questions I am
asked is how someone goes about getting a
birth certificate or a marriage license. The
Voorhees Vital Statistics Office handles the
processing of birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses and domestic
partnership certifications. Besides issuing
the documents, it is also responsible for the
permanent archiving of these documents,
some of which date back to the founding of
Voorhees in 1899.
This department processed almost 6,000
birth certificates last year. If you need a

copy of your birth certificate, you can get

same day service in
Town Hall. You will
need to show a valid
drivers license with
your current address
or two pieces of mail
dated within the past
90 days with your current address, as well

The cost for a copy of your birth certificate

is $25. Recently, the state allowed the issuance of birth certificates online. To get a
birth
certificate
online,
visit
www.voorheesnj.com and look for the VitalChek link. You will need a credit card
for payment when using this option.
A marriage license application must be
made in the municipality in which one of
the parties resides and the license is valid
throughout the state. There is a 72-hour

Areas first freestanding inpatient

hospice center to open in Voorhees

Dont wait for

another storm!

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice hope to open center in 2016

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
If all goes according to plan,
next year Voorhees Township
will be home to the areas first
freestanding inpatient hospice
with the recently announced
Samaritan Center at Voorhees.
The freestanding hospice will
be another branch of Samaritan
Healthcare & Hospice, the Marlton headquartered not-for-profit
hospice organization, which will
now have a permanent center in
Voorhees for patients and families facing a level of illness that
home health aides cannot properly treat in a patients home.
According to Samaritan public
relations manager Carol Paproc-

ki, while most people faced with a

serious illness would like to be in
the comfort of their own home,
the idea of having a place where
hospice care could be provided 24
hours a day is often mentioned by
patients families when first inquiring with Samaritan about
care.
They also want to know, if my
loved one is alone at home, what
happens if the pain symptoms
are such that it requires that
higher level of care, and is there a
place that can provide that? Paprocki said. When people call for
hospices, that is a question they
do ask.
Paprocki said Samaritan chose
Voorhees for the new center after
researching several properties

over the last several years and decided upon the final location off
Route 73 because it offered a secluded setting in the woods, as
well as quick access to the areas
major highways, with five acutecare hospitals within a 10-mile radius.
We have five counties that we
serve and its not always convenient for people from parts of Atlantic, Camden or Gloucester to
travel up to Mt. Holly (Samaritans hospice center at Virtua Memorial Hospital) so we wanted
something that would be more accessible, Paprocki said.

Tests to be administered on iPads

Properly dispose of your

unwanted prescriptions
By Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez

TESTS
Continued from page 1
schedule designed specifically for
the tests.
Its going to be important because our bell schedule is going to
be very different, Cloutier said.
This is an unusual testing format. Weve never tested this number of students while actually
conducting classes as well, and locations have changed.
As for students whose parents
have refused to let them take the
test, which has been a controversial issue in various districts
across the state, those students
will be moved to the Performing
Arts Center during the test.
Its approximately 12-15 parents who have made that request
at this time, and we will use the
Performing Arts Center as an alternative location that will be supervised during the testing time,
Cloutier said.
In total, the district will be testing 1,496 students during the
week of March 9-13 with three
tests in language arts and two
tests in math for the first round,
with the same students tested
again from April 20-23 with two
tests in language arts and two
tests in math.
Cloutier said the tests would be
administered on 550 iPads, with
three different testing sessions
available to test all freshmen,
sophomores and juniors.
Issues of time, space, the
number of test administrators
that well need its all pretty
compressive, Cloutier said.
According to Cloutier, the districts 493 seniors, who are exempt from the tests, will still be in
the building during the March

and April examination periods,

although about 230 will be in
Florida on their senior trip on
March 9 and 10, and the test
schedule was designed to disrupt
their class periods as little as possible.
The district has also met with
teachers regarding instruction
during students class periods
when they are not taking the
tests, and there will be no tests or
quizzes during that time.
Its going to be certainly an

unusual week, so no tests or

quizzes in grades nine through 11
classes, and teachers have been
very flexible in understanding
the needs here, and classroom
projects and activities will be recommended, Cloutier said.

Prescription Drug
Drop Boxes are now
located across Camden County to provide
residents with a free
and anonymous way
to dispose of unwanted prescription
drugs. The Camden
County
Addiction
Awareness Task Force
provides a list of drop box locations
on their website www.addictions.
camdencounty.com to prevent these
potentially dang erous expired
and unused prescription drugs to
fall into the wrong hands.
I urge you to check your medicine
cabinets for unwanted prescription
drugs that you may not even remember you have in your home. Please
keep the medicine you do need in a
locked cabinet for the safety of
other members of your household.
Last year, Americans turned in
more than 300 tons of unwanted
prescription drugs at over 5,400
drop-off sites across the country.
The take-back program addresses a
vital public safety and public health
issue. Medicines that languish in
home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
Rates of prescription drug abuse in
the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are
the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these
drugs. In addition, Americans are
now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicinesflushing them down the
toilet or throwing them in the
trashboth pose potential safety
and health hazards.
As a mother, educator and elected
official, the addiction crisis in Camden County is one of my biggest
concerns. Prescription drugs have
become the number one abused substance by young people because

they are accessible

and go fairly undetected. Studies show
that a majority of
abused prescription
drugs are obtained
from family and
friends,
including
from the home medicine cabinet. Parents
and grandparents become the unwitting supplier of
these dangerous substances.
Unwanted prescriptions may be
disposed at the Bellmawr Police Department, Cherry Hill Police Department, Gloucester Township
Police Department, Haddon Heights
Police Department, Magnolia Police
Department, Pine Hill Police Department, Voorhees Police Department, Waterford Township Police
Department and Winslow Township
Police Department.
We recognize the importance of
having a safe and legal way to dispose of these substances, and are
working in cooperation with every
municipality in Camden County to
identify drop-off sites. Please continue to check the Camden County
Addiction Awareness Task Force
website for additional locations that
will be added in the coming months.

please call our 24/7 toll-free confidential hotline for addiction assistance at (877) 266-8222.

ed, will feature 18 beds in separate, private rooms, grouped in

three wings with the projected
ability to serve 1,100 patients annually.
In addition, each room will
have a private bathroom, a pullout bed for relatives, a place to put
mementos and a private conversation alcove for family members,
and each room will be within
view of soothing gardens.
The center at large will feature
a common area living room and
eat-in kitchen, an area for children where families can gather if
needed as well as a main office for
Samaritans physician group, Palliative Medical Partners.
Also included will be a medita-

tion chapel, counseling rooms

and conference spaces for the
emotional needs of patients, families and visitors.
With hospice care, we are caring not only for the patient but
also for the families as well, and
we view that care as helping people meet the physical needs of the
illness but the spiritual and psychological needs as well, Paprocki said.
Paprocki said the township as
a whole will also benefit from a
98-seat auditorium to be included
at the center apart from patient
wings, which in addition to
Samaritan services, will also be
used for community events.
As a not-for-profit organization
with a charitable mission, Paprocki said Samaritan accepts
payment for some services from
Medicaid, Medicare and medical
insurance, but provides uncompensated care and has never

turned away a patient who met

hospice requirements.
In that regard, Paprocki said
The
Samaritan
Center
at
Voorhees would be completed
through financing, Samaritans
reserves and through a capital
campaign, with $200,000 having
already been raised by the Samaritan board, leadership team, management and employees.
They helped raise the first
part of the campaign because we
do want to be able to say to the
community that our managers
and staff support the project, Paprocki said.
Overall, Paprocki said she believed the center would be a
groundbreaking event in more
ways than one.
It is going to be the first freestanding hospice in the area, and
it really is going to be a place of
compassion and support for our
community, Paprocki said.

Caplans look back on 55 years of marriage

By KRISTEN DOWD
The Sun
Aaron Caplan was attracted to
his future wife, Joyce, from their
first meeting. Joyces coworker
ran into Aaron an old friend
and the three grabbed lunch together. But despite Aarons instant attraction, he didnt call
Joyce for more than three months.
Once he did, however, things
moved quickly. The couple was
engaged eight days after their
first date.
I said, Lets go steady, Aaron
said, and she said, No one goes
steady anymore. Either you do or
you dont.
So, they did, and now the Caplans have been married for 55
years.
Aaron said he was attracted to

Joyce because of her looks, of

course, but also by her down-toearth nature.
Shes the nicest person Ive
ever met, Aaron said.
The couple now resides in
Brandywine Senior Living at
Voorhees. They raised their
daughters, Lori and Wendi, in
Elkins Park, Pa. Lori now has
three daughters Hayley, Sydney
and Addison and Wendi has one
daughter, Lia-Rose.
Were a very close family,
Joyce said. Thats one of the
greatest outcomes of our marriage. Our daughters and our
grandchildren.
Absolutely, Aaron agreed.
My daughters are my best
friends.
The Caplans built an insurance
company together, and they have

fond memories of their house always filled with family, friends

and good times. They were active
in their community, especially
with the Democratic Party in
Cheltenham Township.
Aaron said being married is a
challenge, but hes proud of the
wonderful life he and Joyce built
together.
During 55 years, you are faced
with all different kinds of situations. Youre tested on how your
relationship survives, he said.
We had a good life together. We
still have a good life together.
According to Joyce, they took
their marriage vows to heart.
We both believed when we
took those marriage vows that
marriage is forever, she said,
And thats how you live your life
together.
