Grade 7-Science

Lesson Plan: December 10, 2014

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
1. Describe what is light.
2. Identify the common sources of light.

Subject Matter: Light

References: Unit 3, Module 4, page 43-46
Learners Activities:
A. Daily routines
Prayers
Checking of Attendance
B. Lesson Recall
Sound Waves
What travels fast? Sound or light? Why?
Motivations: Did you know that:
*Light travels at a speed of about 300,000 km/s.
*The sunlight that we see here on Earth actually left the Sun 10 minutes before.
* Although humans cannot see UV light, some insects have the ability to see it.
Ultraviolet (UV) light has shorter wavelengths than visible light. Although UV waves are
invisible to the human eye, some insects, such as bumblebees, can see them. This is similar to
how a dog can hear the sound of a whistle just outside the hearing range of humans.
*Among these insects that can see UV lights are houseflies, bluebottles, wasps, and
mosquitoes.
*some animals produce their own light. This is called bioluminescence.
LESSON PROPER:
Activity 1: Lit a Candle
In this activity, students should be able to describe the distance of the light from its
source. The students should be able tell what happens when the light source gets near
and far.
Activity 2: Lit a Flashlight
In this activity, students should be able to distinguish what is natural light or artificial
light.
Activity 3: Video Clips of natural light, artificial lights, bioluminescence light
In this activity, students should be able to distinguish natural light from artificial light
from the video clips.
GENERALIZATION:
1. What is light? Light is a source of energy.
2. What are the common sources of light?
Natural light- main source is the sun. The sun is a star that is a huge ball of gas. Explosions at
the centre of the sun produce large amounts of energy. This energy is released as light and heat.
Some of this light reaches Earth and gives us daylight. The light that comes from the sun is
known as white light.

Artificial Light- Humans have been able to create and control light for thousands of years. The
earliest form of lighting was with fire such as burning wood, candles, gas or oil. Now the most
convenient source of artificial light is the electric light.
Valuing and Applications:
1. Call two students and have them both stand up. One will hold a flashlight and one will just
stand up. Let the student 1 turn on the flashlight and point it to student 2. Ask the students
what happens when the light is farther and nearer to student 1.
2. Ask the students what kind of light source they use during the typhoon Ruby that occurred
last December 8.
Evaluation: 5 items quiz
1. It is the source of energy. ( Light)
2. Two types of light source. ( natural and artificial)
3. The sun is what kind of light source. (natural)
4. Give at least 3 kinds of artificial light source. (Flashlight, lighters, lamps, candles...)
5. What is the kind of light being produced by some living organisms? ( bioluminescence)
