BCSTheoryofSuperconductivity

BCSTheoryof
Superconductivity
ThepropertiesofTypeIsuperconductorsweremodeledsuccessfully
bytheeffortsofJohnBardeen,LeonCooper,andRobertSchrieffer
inwhatiscommonlycalledtheBCStheory.Akeyconceptual
elementinthistheoryisthepairingofelectronsclosetotheFermi
levelintoCooperpairsthroughinteractionwiththecrystallattice.
Thispairingresultsfromaslightattractionbetweentheelectrons
relatedtolatticevibrationsthecouplingtothelatticeiscalleda
phononinteraction.
Pairsofelectronscanbehaveverydifferentlyfromsingleelectrons
whicharefermionsandmustobeythePauliexclusionprinciple.The
pairsofelectronsactmorelikebosonswhichcancondenseintothe
sameenergylevel.Theelectronpairshaveaslightlylowerenergy
andleaveanenergygapabovethemontheorderof.001eVwhich
inhibitsthekindofcollisioninteractionswhichleadtoordinary
resistivity.Fortemperaturessuchthatthethermalenergyislessthan
thebandgap,thematerialexhibitszeroresistivity.
