BY JOSH STEIN
has the most impact on two years crops because the weather often
flipflops quite quickly, and rain at an early point can be helpful to
bring temperatures up while later in the season causing crop
damage via hail or thunderstorms winds. Shattering of the bloming
flowers can disrupt clusters or keep them from being fertilized, yet
when faced with a frost event earlier in the year, rain is welcomed as
it brings the temperature up above freezing. Summer and autumn
heat can also be an issue because too-high a temperature can cause
vines to shut down, shriveling or even sunburning grapes, and also
potentially killing the vine in the process, especially if there is little
to no water left at the end of season.
This is not our first go-around with drought in California wine
country, of course. There are actually lots of options for mitigation,
and the best, as you might expect, are set up so as to help solve
more than one problem. Believe it or not, something as simple as
low trellising versus high has an impact as far as weather goes. Low
trellises in the wrong locales are more subject to frost damage, and
higher trellises can provide shade for adjacent rows. How the trellis
is trimmed in winter and early spring prior to budbreak is thus one
strategy, and there is projected to be a move back to California
Sprawl from the VSP candelabra currently seen all over as the
North Coast replants in the next few years for this reason: not only
does this provide different vine growth and Brix gains, but it also
helps as regards frost or hail damage during April and May, when
the buds break and the vines flower, and impacts overall vine water
needs, making it possible to produce more on less irrigation.
Mechanical options to work around water deficits abound, too.
The wind machines, those twirling engines and fans on poles; the
Inverted Sinks or Air Dams, which essentially turn the wind
machine to provide a frost sink to pull cold air down and away
from vines on hillsides and slopes; and smudge pots, the gas fired
heaters for the end of vineyard rows which work in combination
with wind machines all are ways to work in with the shapes of
the land itself to mitigate the negatives of weather while allowing
the terroir, the locational distinctiveness, to still show through in
the grapes and finished wines by moving the weather since the
vines really cannot. Its not always easy or cheap, but the results are
worth it, no? Enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.

For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting
rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all
types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who
pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and
close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Here are some tips that have proven
to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of
wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water)
and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries
have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can
make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to
eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for
lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine,
and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into
your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a
pitcher of water to wash out your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a
stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like
reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of
starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a
good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list,
ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade
tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in
mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour,
so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include
smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines.
Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay
more, and besides, whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen
or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered
throughout the area and more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if
you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more
than a phone call hire a transportation company to do the driving.

Madrone Vineyards Estate is a true Sonoma icon with a rich winemaking history that spans
over 150 years. For the discerning wine lover, the winery offers visitors small-lot and estate
wines including a selection of old vine zinfandels in a stunning location.
The Stewart Family purchased the estate in 2012 with the goal of preserving its storied
history. Known for many years as Valley of the Moon Winery, the Stewarts reinstated the
original name dating back to the late 1800s: Madrone Vineyards Estate. The winery continues
to make Valley of the Moon wines which are available at retail stores nationally.
Visitors can relax in comfort and style in the newly remodeled tasting room or in the
shadow of the historic barrel cellar on the patio next to a creek side bocce court. Designer
Richard Von Saal has created an evocative setting by blending the old winerys uncut fieldstone
with reclaimed wood, glass, salvaged steel and concrete, recalling the origins of California wine
in the expansive, light-filled space. A family tree etched on zinc and a wall of historic estate
images and labels merge past with present. Rich leather sofas and armchairs cluster around an
ancient oak slab, a cozy banquette provides room for larger groups and two and four-top glass
tables are perfect for a focused tasting.
When asked about the beautiful blending of old and new, Estate President Tyler Galts said,
Madrone is an interesting winery in terms of its historical place in Sonoma and California it
is the oldest operating winery in Glen Ellen and has a family tree involving dozens of
interesting characters and stories. There is something really special about the place and we
hope our guests will feel that magic when they visit.
The estate is a truly unique Sonoma Valley destination that is among the best Sonoma has
to offer in terms of wine quality, service and the guest experiences we offer. The goal with our
wines is that they exceed expectations in term of quality, and very importantly that they
represent Sonoma.
And most importantly, the wines stand up to the history of Sonoma. Winemaker David
Marchesis philosophy of winemaking is to craft balanced wines that are expressive of their

Today, the world of wine sees more educated wine enthusiasts now
more than ever. With the vast array of tasting experiences at wineries
and exclusive bottlings that enthusiasts can take home to cellar and
enjoy at a later date, it seems as though the average wine drinker is
not so average anymore. With wine education comes the excitement
of sharing that newfound knowledge with friends and family.
What better way to share that knowledge than by hosting a wine
tasting party? These days, wine is happily shared with friends and
family at gatherings, parties and celebrations by way of casual tasting
experiences to friendly but formal sit-down tastings in the comfort of
ones own home. But how to keep track of whose glass belongs to
whom? Those pesky charms are a bit outdated and tad cheesy for the
knowledgeable wine enthusiast today, but more elegant and refined
is the Wine Glass Writer.
This innovative product allows guests to choose from a trio of
metallic gold, silver and emerald green markers that are safe to use
on wine glasses. Guests write their names on the base/foot of the
glass or the bowl, and never loose their wine glass or mix it up with
someone elses glass at a tasting party again! The name will stay on
the glass for the duration of the event and then can easily be washed
off with a soapy sponge at the end of the night. Non-toxic, smudge
proof and based out of Northern Californias wine country, Wine

Rodney Strong Vineyards, one of the oldest and a pioneering winery in Sonoma
County, has revamped its tasting experience to invite its visitors to linger and savor its
famous portfolio of wines.
The winery opened a terrace on its grand level this May, which provides plush
seating and table service tasting for its visitors. Imagine enjoying a flight of carefully
selected varietals while listening to live music and basking in the warm summer days
Sonoma County offers.
We want our visitors to relax and enjoy our wines and the Winery, and we
developed this area for that experience, said Mark Mathewson, director of hospitality
and consumer marketing.
Now add to that a series of food and wine pairings, and the experience becomes
truly special.
Rodney Strong has curated several pairings to showcase a variety of wines. The
2013 Charlottes Home Estate Sauvignon Blanc is paired with local chevre and
accouterments; the 2012 Reserve Chardonnay comes with Dungeness crab, citrus,
avocado and quinoa; the 2012 Reserve Pinot Noir is paired with a mushroom pt
and frites and pickled mustard seeds; the 2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is
highlighted by an oxtail bourguignon hand pie with crme fraiche; and the 2011
Rockaway Cabernet Sauvignon is brought to new life with a black garlic and short rib
bun, cardamom pickled carrot and cilantro. The food pairings are $55 per person.
Visitors can also discover variances in the wines by ordering a cheese plate. Most of
the selections come from local cheesemakers, including Cowgirl Creamery in
Petaluma and Cypress Grove in Humboldt County. The cheese plates are $25.
A cheese and charcuterie plate for $35 includes three meats from Framani in
Berkeley a procuitto di parma from Italy and finocchiona from Portland.
These tastings are available Friday through Sunday on the terrace, and wine club
members receive a 20 percent discount.

Midsummer Medieval Festival at Castello di Amorosa
Castello di Amorosa is hosting its seventh annual Midsummer
Medieval Festival on June 20. The festivities will commence at
6:45 p.m. and last until 11 p.m., offering a wide array of medieval
activities, including a full-contact Jousting Tournament, displays
of horse and swordsmanship and a sumptuous feast fit for any
king or queen, all paired with the Castellos fine wines.
Wine club members and guests are invited to don their best
medieval garb and assemble at Lake Mario above the Castello,
where they can toast their favorite knight or damsel at the fullcontact Jousting Tournament, as armor-clad knights compete in
feats of strength and speed from atop charging steeds. Guests also
have the opportunity to test their own skills with archery and
sword fighting lessons, or watch as the mail-clad knights
demonstrate sword fighting techniques and catapulting in the
medieval village they have created especially for the evening.
Once the tournament and festivities have concluded, lords and

Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

while residing for many years in Austin, Texas and uses his Spanish
heritage as influence for his cooking.
Meadowcrofts Resident Chef Darby Tarantino, who is a graduate
of Ballymaloe Cookery School in Co. Cork, Ireland, plans to
prepare classic Wine Country sides that will complement De La
Montanyas barbecue and pair beautifully with Meadowcrofts
award-winning wines. In honoring her farm-to-table approach,
Tarantino will prepare sides to include Hooker House Bourbon
baked beans, featuring Rancho Gordo Heirloom beans and her
classic Sonoma Slaw using fresh produce from Green String Farm in
Petaluma. Grilled French bread from Full Circle Bakery in
Penngrove slathered with butter and spices will complete this
Fathers Day feast.
Meadowcroft Wines includes the Meadowcroft, Foyt Family and
Thomas Henry labels. The Meadowcroft tasting room is part of the
CornerStone Sonoma complex that features 24 world-class gardens,
a gourmet caf, art galleries and cutting-edge design shops all set
among acres of vineyards.
Meadowcroft Wines is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The
venue is available for private parties, private tastings, wine dinners
and other events. For information or to make reservations, call

Come and see for yourself why the tasting room at Kenwood
Vineyards promises a top ranking wine tasting experience.
Located in the town of Kenwood, the tasting room is housed
inside a warm and welcoming rustic barn dating back to 1906.
Upon arrival, the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and accessible
serving an impressive portfolio of premium wines, including the
exclusive trio of reds from the Jack London estate.
Founded in 1970, Kenwood Vineyards is a beautiful historic
winery with a deep connection to the land. For more than 40
years, Kenwood has earned the reputation of producing small lot
style wines from more than 550 estate-owned acres and using
sourced grapes from dozens of sustainably farmed vineyards in
Sonoma Countys best appellations. The vineyard grapes are picked
separately to preserve its uniqueness and true character. As a
result, every bottle of Kenwood Vineyards wine proves delicious.
In addition, Kenwood Vineyards has been given the privilege of
producing the Jack London series where a wolfs head adorns the
label. Kenwood Vineyards holds the sole rights to the vineyards of
the famous and historic Jack London Ranch. From these fertile
grapes, award-winning, limited-production wines are produced.
When visiting the tasting room, you must try their delicious 2012
Jack London Zinfandel, as well as the 2011 Jack London Syrah,
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
With more than 30 wines on the tasting menu, you will find the
perfect wine for you. They have over 13 varietals, including
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, White Zinfandel,
Moscato, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Syrah, Vintage White and Red Blends, and Sparkling Wine.
Dont miss the Kenwood Vineyard Artist Series, a Sonoma
County tradition since 1975. Local artist David Lance Goines was
commissioned to create an original art work for the first reserve
Kenwood Vineyard 1975 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon. The
concept was to design an inspiring, distinctive label that would
showcase an artists unique art. Today, each vintage represents a
distinct work of art, showcasing the true character of the
collection. The 2010 Artist Series Cabernet was given a Top Wine
accolade with a 91 rating by Wine Enthusiast in March of 2015.
Lovers of premium wine and fine art will be fully satisfied
spending the day at Kenwood Vineyards, one of the top 100
wineries in the Sonoma wine country!

products that are not only beautiful and delicious but more
importantly reflect their commitment to their ecological values and
love for animals.
For more than four decades, St. Francis has hand-crafted fruit
forward, luscious and full-bodied wines from the superior
mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma Countys best
appellations. St. Francis wines are recognized globally for
outstanding quality and great value. As a Certified Sustainable,
family-owned winery, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards has worked
throughout its history to preserve Sonoma Countys natural

p.m.) while guests nosh on bites and nibbles created by Park Avenue
Catering. Following the opening reception, guests will be seated and
enjoy a gourmet, four-course meal highlighting local Mendocino
products prepared by celebrated owner and Executive Chef at Park
Avenue Catering, Bruce Riezenman. Each course will be paired with
multiples wines from the 2012 vintage (full menu with pairings listed
above). Every table will host a different winemaker or a winery
representative from a Coro winery to answer any questions guests
might have about Coro and the wines being poured. The evening will
conclude with a selection of beautifully handmade desserts and treats,
including a Coro sorbet, paired with ports and dessert wines from the
participating Coro wineries.
Wineries participating in Coro Mendocinos 2012 Annual Release
Party include: Barra of Mendocino, Brutocao Cellars, Clos du Bois,
Golden Vineyards, McFadden Vineyard, Parducci Wine Cellars, Rays
Station and Testa Vineyards. As a parting gift, each couple will receive
a complete collection of the eight 2012 Coro wines produced by
these labels to take home and enjoy (a value of $320).
Cost per couple to attend the Release Party is $700, and includes
the complete collection of 2012 Coro wines (a $350 value).
The Coro wines have evolved over the last 12 years as fullbodied, fruit-forward products that stand out as complex and
different from standard varietal bottlings, said Dennis Patton, a
founding Coro winemaker. In moving the dinner to San Francisco,
we hope to introduce Coro wines to individuals who are not familiar
with the brand, and have them fall in love with our story and wines,
just as our loyal and long-time fan base has.
