A. Preparatory Activities
1. Spelling/Review:
Teacher gives a spelling exercise on words with silent letters:
palm
combing

psalm
handkerchief

island
climbing

Teacher shall check the spelling exercise. Let the class read the words.
What can you say about each word? (There is a letter which is not
sounded.)
Identify the letter which is silent in each word.
2. Motivation
Lets look at these words on the board. Listen well as I say each word.
Find out how these words are pronounced.
B. Development of the Lesson

Teacher gives sample words for pupils to read.

Process Questions

What is common to all these words? (Final sound is not the sound of
the final letter or symbol.)
Lets take the word time as an example.
- Spell time.
- Whats the final letter/symbol? (e)
- Whats the final sound? (/m/)
- What happens to the final letter when the word is produced?
(The final letter/symbol is not sounded.)
Teacher guides the pupils in the analysis of each word.

3. Generalization
a. Take note that some words have final sounds that may not be the
sounds of their final symbols. In other words, the final letter is silent
or unsounded.
b. A vowel in a one-syllable word is long when the word ends in a silent
e.

pronounced.

Pupils will be called by the teacher as he/she draws one word
form the bank.

Read the word aloud then say Yes if it has final silent letter and
