Mt. Laurel Football coming back strong

After a previous sharp decline in players, organization nearly doubles participation thanks to changes
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
It was not too long ago when
Mt. Laurel Football had an average of about 150 kids from ages 5
to 14 come out to play each fall.
In recent years, however, the
numbers decreased dramatically.
In 2014, the number of players hit
a new low when just 69 kids took
the field.
This year, Mt. Laurel Football
has made a comeback with a new
board, new energy and a new philosophy. And with the changes
came a surge of new players at a
time when many organizations in
South Jersey are struggling to get
kids to play football.
Mt. Laurel Football opened
practices for the fall season on
Aug. 11 with about 115 players, a
huge increase of nearly 50 kids
from the previous season.
The programs resurgence is
due in large part to the leadership
of a new volunteer board this
year.
After struggling to get through
the 2014 season, the board got to
work right after the seasons conclusion to figure out how they
could get kids back on the gridiron.
The year prior, there were a
lot of concussion stories in the

paper, Mt. Laurel Football president Robert Monaco said. What
also happened is we changed
leagues to be in a more competitive league, where we were travel-

ing more. We were also a little

harder on practices, so it trickled
down to the kids.
One of the biggest issues was
safety. Monaco said concussions

have caused the number of kids

playing football to decline in all of
the surrounding communities,
not just Mt. Laurel.
We communicate a lot with

Marlton and Medford, he said.

Across the board, the numbers
have definitely declined.
To ease parents safety concerns, the board organized more
clinics for both players and parents, including a Mom Football
101 event in February. The message to parents was the coaches
were going to teach kids to play
football in a safe way.
We did more coaches training,
with the Heads Up initiative,
Monaco said. All of our coaches
are taught to tackle properly so
you dont have as much of a risk
of a concussion.
The other challenge Mt. Laurel
Football faced was bringing kids
back who had been leaving the organization due to some changes.
Mt. Laurel had switched a few
years ago from the South Jersey
Independent Youth Football Association to the South Jersey Elite
Invitational
Youth
Football
League so it could play more competitive programs. The switch
caused issues with some parents
who didnt like the longer travel
times and some kids who werent
enjoying the longer and harder
practices.
For 2015, the board decided to
switch back to the South Jersey
Independent Youth Football Assoplease see MONACO, page 9

Mt. Laurel police cracking down on drunk drivers

Statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is Labor Day weekend
Officers from the Mt. Laurel Police Department will be cracking down on drunk
drivers as part of the 2015 Labor Day
Statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over campaign. Beginning Aug. 21 and
running through Sept. 7, local and state
law enforcement officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols,
looking for motorists who may be driving
while intoxicated.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and
driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including
posters, banners and mobile video display
signs.
Launched across the United States in
1999, the program works to combat drunk
driving during the busy summer travel

season, including the Labor Day holiday

period.
More than 10,000 people are killed in
the United States each year in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, and these crashes
cost our society nearly $50 billion annually, said Gary Poedubicky, acting director
of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety.
There is a zero tolerance message for this
campaign. If drivers are caught operating
their vehicle while impaired they will be
arrested.
In 2013, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 27 percent of New Jerseys
motor vehicle fatalities. As part of the initiative, the Division of Highway Traffic
Safety provides grants to local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to run
the two-week campaign.
Law enforcement agencies participating

in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2015

crackdown offer the following advice:
If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alcohol, before going out.
Take mass transit, a taxi or ask a
sober friend to drive you home.
Spend the night where the activity is
held.
Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. In New Jersey, drivers may dial
#77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver.
Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle.
Its your best defense against an impaired
driver.
If youre intoxicated and traveling
on foot, the safest way to get home is to
take a cab or have a sober friend or family
member drive you to your doorstep.

Piles of small yard debris

causing issues for public works
Mt. Laurel Township officials want to remind
residents to not put small yard debris curbside
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Little piles of weeds, plants,
small branches and other small
yard debris have created a small
mess on some Mt. Laurel streets.
Township officials are advising
residents to refrain from placing
small yard debris out for brush
pickup. Public works crews have
come across piles of small debris
in a number of neighborhoods
this summer.
We are having issues with residents throwing small piles of yard
debris when they are too small to
be handled by our large brush
truck, township manager Maureen Mitchell said. This truck
only picks up large landscape
items that cannot be bagged.
The small yard debris can cause
a number of issues. Mitchell said
the debris can be an eyesore for
those driving through the township. It also can clog storm drains
and impede water flow during
storms.
The brush truck is only designed to pick up large pieces of
debris and loose brush. When
brush collection is performed in a
neighborhood, the truck picks up
branches and other large debris.

Mitchell said all small yard debris should be thrown out with
grass clippings.
Small branches should be broken down and bagged along with
clippings and other landscape
items in white biodegradable bags
or placed in their old green recycling bucket, Mitchell said.
Small piles of landscape items
will not be picked up by either
truck, as they need to be containerized.
Residents can pick up bags for
free at the Mt. Laurel Municipal
Building. A separate truck will
come around to collect the bagged
items and green containers on
each neighborhoods trash day

during the second and fourth

week of each month. Residents do
not need to call prior to a pickup.
Brush pickup was a topic of discussion at a Mt. Laurel Council
meeting in July. Director of municipal services Jerry Mascia proposed a structured brush collection schedule where every neighborhood would have brush pickup twice a month. Members of
council had a number of concerns
with the plan and decided not to
implement it. Last week, Mitchell
said the township is not planning
to make any changes to brush
pickup in the near future.
