Ten top tips?

Weve been thinking a lot about 10s recently
It is 10 years since Inclusion North started
This is our 100th bulletin
and a few months ago Sue from North Yorkshire sent me
the Ten Top Tips for working with Inclusion North that she
was sent as a Lead Officer when Inclusion North was
starting.

I think many of those Top Ten Tips are still really good
ideas lots has changed in the last 10 years but some
things always matter.

I think the things that always matter are about how we work
together, share information and make a difference with
what we have got the ideas and skills of us all as well as
money

You can see these Top Tips at http://bit.ly/1KAdXcF

What do you think of them? Do they ring true today?

We would love to know what you think about how we work

together but also what you think has changed in the last 10
years

You can see more about how we are looking back and
thinking forward to the next 10 years on page 5.

I hope that even if you cannot come to the Members Day in

November you will share your ideas and feedback I
promise we will share the work from that day and we will
carry on working hard to do our bit to help you make
inclusion happen.

Inclusion North Members Day

Every year we ask our member areas to let us know how
we could help them more. In last years survey some
members said they would like to have a day where they
can meet people from other areas.

We think that this is a good way for areas to get together

and share ideas about some of the issues and challenges
we all face.

We will be holding our Members Day on:

27th November, 10-3pm
At
York CVS,
Priory Street,
York,
YO1 6ET
On the day we will be thinking about:

What is important for a good life and equal rights

Social Care and community
How health services can be better
Language and community connections
Mindfulness
Sharing ideas and solutions
How Inclusion North can support its members in the
future

It will be a solution focussed and interactive day where

everyone can give their ideas.

There will be guest speakers including:

Brian Frisby, Director of Prevention and
Personalisation, Derby City Council
Rob Webster, CEO of the NHS Confederation
Mole Chapman, author, disability activist and trainer
Steve Noone, Clinical Psychologist
You can also meet the Inclusion North staff team, Directors
and Advisory Council.

The day is for self advocates, family carers and

commissioners and providers from all Inclusion North
member areas.

Thinking Back and Looking Forward

We think it is important to understand what has happened
in the past to help us all work out how we get what we want
in the future.

At the Inclusion North Members day on 27th November we

will be talking about what we think will or needs to happen
next.

We are asking groups, Partnership Boards and networks to

tell us so we can share all the different ideas
We have made a question sheet for people to put their
ideas on, so that we can gather all of the ideas and
thoughts from different areas together, to better understand
what people want to talk about on the day.
You can see the question sheet here:
http://bit.ly/1WhWwVD

You can return it to us by email at

marie@inclusionnorth.org
or you can post a paper copy to us at

Advisory Council
The Advisory Council is an important part of Inclusion
North. It is a group of self advocates, family members and
professionals.

They make sure that Inclusion North is doing what it

should, advise staff and directors, share ideas and ask
questions.

You can find out more about the work Advisory council
here:
http://bit.ly/1WhWEEB

This is what some of the members of the Advisory Council

have said about being part of it:
"Its welcoming - we're all equal and it builds
confidence while you're there"

"putting your voice with your ideas and

experiences helps to make changes"

"I've got more out of Inclusion North helping me

set up my own group"

We are now looking for new members to join the Advisory

Council. They meet four times a year and all expenses are
paid.

If you think you would like to become part of this and share
your ideas please could you fill in the application form to
tell us a bit more about yourself.

You can download the application pack from our website

here:

Family Carers Survey 2015

To do our work well it is really important that we know what
life is like for people with learning disabilities and their
carers. We need to know the challenges they face and
what needs to change for them to have a good life.

We did a survey of self advocates in April and now we want

to find out a bit more about carers.

We will use the information to improve our work and

understanding how our work with family carers can be
more useful.

If you are a family member or carer you can complete this

questionnaire here:
http://svy.mk/1G1U7Fs
If you prefer to complete a paper questionnaire you can
print one from here:
http://bit.ly/1KzlLuk

Please return questionnaires by 31st October 2015 to:

Self-Advocacy Supporters Network

Inclusion North will be running a network aimed at people
who have a paid or volunteer role in supporting a selfadvocacy or similar group run by people with learning
disabilities. This network is aimed at people working or
volunteering in Inclusion North member areas only.

Lots of people in these roles have said they would really

welcome this as the role can be a challenging. The aims of
the network are:
To share examples of good practice and learning
To work together to find solutions to challenges
To explore any things we might work on together

We can offer space for up to 2 people from each

organisation. However we know that some areas have
more than one organisation and that some organisations
work in lots of different places. We will make sure
everybody gets a chance to come along.

The dates of the meetings are:

October 13th Newcastle
December 15th York
February 16th 2016 Newcastle

All the sessions will start at 10.30am and finish at 3.00pm.

Lunch will be provided.

The network will be facilitated by Kellie Woodley and we

hope that members of the network will be active too.
If you have any questions about the network please contact
Kellie on

Rethinking Advocacy
In 2011 Inclusion North and NHS North East began a
project to try to understand the provision of advocacy for
people who were accessing assessment and treatment
services across the North East.

The project was a first response to the many issues raised

by the abuse at Winterbourne View.
As the project developed the focus and scope moved to
understand advocacy in our communities in general.
Inclusion North supported many pieces of work to look at
this
You can find all of this work at:
http://bit.ly/1LNsge7

http://bit.ly/1QYNb26

This report is based on the 4 years work as described

above and a further series of workshops held in both the
North East region and the Yorkshire and Humber region in
May 2015.

The model outlined here is coproduced with key

stakeholders across both regions. The paper proposes a
change in the way that advocacy is delivered and
commissioned.

You can read the report here:

David Pitonyak Workshop

Inclusion North will be running a workshop with David
Pitonyak who has done a lot of work with people who have
a label of challenging services, their friends and families.

You can find out more about David and his work here:
http://bit.ly/1MIlDiM

The workshop will be on 4th December in Darlington.

It will be for people with learning disabilities, families,
carers and professionals from Inclusion North member
areas
We will be sending out more information very soon.

Care Act and Community Development

Support for our members

Whats it all about?

As part of its work plan Inclusion North is offering to
support its member areas to implement some of the
changes needed to deliver on the Care Act.

We will work with your local Social Care and Health

support providers to understand what the main challenges
are from their perspective - we will do this via survey
monkey and then design what is needed with them from
this information. We anticipate this will be a programme of
support/solution building across the patch.

We will work with providers/self-advocacy

groups/community organisations to design and deliver
some community building work in one geographical area
(usually a ward or similar size) to strengthen the community
offer to local people with learning disabilities and learn
more about what it takes for communities to be inclusive.

We are making this offer as our member area and people

with learning disabilities and their families have told us it is
a priority for them. They want to build community capacity
as well as make sure support services are geared to
helping people have a good life.

The aim would be

To establish a shared understanding of what local
organisations are finding challenging in implementing
very key changes in social care delivery
Share what models of community development are
working elsewhere
Understand what people and families say are the
barriers to community inclusion
Design innovative and flexible models of support that
work for people and support citizenship

How we will do the work

This offer is open to any Inclusion North member areas. It
is part of the work plan so does not use any of the local
resource or vouchers from members subscription

We will offer this across the regions to local areas that are
interested. We will share what we learn with our other
member areas.

What member areas will be asked to do

Provide any rooms as needed
Provide local knowledge and contacts

Support the involvement of people in the work or

circulating information where appropriate

Resources
Inclusion North produces information packs to help people
understand changes in the law, your rights and some of the
big issues people face.
