Wow, I didn't think Lee Ave had any bad teachers! After college, I began teaching Physical Education
and coaching athletics on Long Island. After a few years, I moved to California where I continued my
career. Eventually earned a Master's degree in Educational Administration. I have been
teaching/coaching and loving it for the past 25 years. I am happily married for the past 15 years. We
have 4 dogs and 11 cats! We have the best of both worlds owning a house in California and also in one
in New York! Love and regards to all classmates from Hicksville '79!

Dear Bob,
We had 65 paid attendees at the Dinner Dance held on November 19th and made a profit of @ $1,000.
Everyone had a great time. Tommy Sullivan as usual was outstanding. Four school board members
(Michael Beniventano, Steve Culhane, Phil Heckler, and Ms.Brenda Judson) and Hicksville's
Superintendent of Schools' Dr. Carl Bonuso were in attendance along with HHS principal, Ray
Williams. They came to support this first fund raising event for the HHS Alumni
Foundation and not only did they enjoy the music and food but all indicated that they were excited
about future joint cooperative efforts.
We plan to take a substantial portion of the above mentioned profit to pay for a liability insurance
premium so we can do another fund raising event using the high school auditorium. Paul Korman has
offered his great musical talents and his group, Dr. K's MoTown Revue for this next fund raising effort.
We hope to get a date approved by the Hicksville School Board for a Friday evening in early April 2016.
Tickets would be reasonably priced at $20.00 and any money raised at this concert would go for
scholarships and the funding of an Alumni Wall of Honor to be placed in the high school entrance area
near the auditorium. The rendering of the Wall of Honor is shown above.
I will forward some photos that I took at this recent dinner dance held at the Joseph Barry Knights of
Columbus hall on November 21, 2015. One final remark: I personally want to praise the kindness and
support extended to us by the leadership of the Joseph Barry Knights of Columbus. They gave us a very
fair price so we could realize a profit and the food and waitress staff were magnificent.
Sincerely
John Maniec

Good afternoon
I've not written before and as a Hicksville graduate of 1965 I tend to lurk in the background.....until I
saw a familiar name; Walt Schmidt. In case you all don't know, Walt is a severely disabled Vietnam
Veteran that is one of the most inspirational people that I or anyone could ever
have met. I had the honor of meeting Walter at the TOB office in Massapequa some weeks ago to
speak with Warren Woodall, DAV with regards to my case with the VA. I wish I had Warren's courage
and tenacity. What a man! Kind regards to all.

Dear Classmates
I've been working on a power point presentation for many months and finally completed the project
yesterday. I successfully created a video from the presentation that is now on You Tube. The
presentation celebrates those former students who have been chosen for induction into the Hicksville
High School Hall of Fame. I was unable to assign a photograph to many of the inductees for various
reasons...most notable was because I didn't have a yearbook for that year. Anyhow, I hope all can enjoy
the video despite me not being able to present it differently.

Hicksville Public Schools established a Hall of Fame in 1985 to confer recognition on graduates who
have achieved distinction in their chosen profession or community and who will serve as a role model
for the graduating class. This year the district is searching for one individual to join the ranks of past
honorees.
Nomination letters can be forwarded to the school district and should include the following information:
candidates name, address, telephone number, year of graduation, biographical information and
professional/organizational/community achievements. Individuals should also include their own contact
information.

If I may I would like to add the names of three brothers who attended and graduated from HHS
BEGINNING IN 1938 AND 1940 AND ENDING IN 1949.
In chronological order:
Samuel Levitt, Editor of the Comet, Class of 1942 Yearbook . Reporter and Columnist for the Comet
newspaper, 1938-42. Vice-president of the Class of 1942.
Member of the Glee Club throughout all JHS and SHS years. A cast member of the senior play in 1942.
Eugene Levitt, band and orchestra member in all JHS and SHS grades playing the bass horn for both
groups 1938-1944. Reporter for the Comet during junior and senior years, 1943-44.
Milton Levitt was on the Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball teams during the last three years at HHS .
He was a member of the Track and Field team during all of his stay at HHS becoming a running broad
jump champion during his last year, having taken second place at the New York State High School track
and field championships in 1949.
All brothers had post high school and college careers on Long Island. Sam as a teacher in the Great
Neck Public Schools. Eugene was an attorney in Huntington. Milton, the only one to stay in what was
his hometown, was a craftsman and business man in Hicksville.
Thanks
Samuel Levitt

In The News
Did any of you guys know this??? I received it from one of the Vets on our Vietnam
Confirmed list of namesJoe Carfora

I was not aware of this tradition....

While participating in "Cleaning of the Stones" at the National Cemetery in Holly, I noticed a
quarter placed on one of the stones. Later I also noticed a nickel placed on another stone. I was so
touched with this that I took pictures. I googled about the coins and found this out:

A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldiers family know that somebody stopped by to pay their
respect.
Leaving a penny means you visited.
A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp (basic) together.
If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime
A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier died.
*********************************************************************************
I never heard of the tradition but upon further investigation discovered the following....
Humans have been leaving mementos on and within the final resting places of loved ones almost from
the beginning of the species. Excavations of even the earliest graves uncover goods meant to serve the
deceased in the next world, such as pottery, weapons and beads.

The earliest known coins date to the late seventh century B.C. As societies began embracing monetary
systems, coins began being left in the graves of its citizens merely as yet another way of equipping the
dear departed in the afterlife. the 'tradition' of soldiers leaving on the headstones of fallen comrades
varying denominations of coins to denote their relationship with the deceased, the earliest reference to
this practice we've found so far dates only to June 2009, when it appeared as a web site post. The version
now commonly circulated in e-mail appears to have been drawn from it, albeit some changes have
slipped in, such as "A buddy who served in the same outfit, or was with the deceased when he died,
might leave a quarter" becoming "By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you
were with the soldier when he was killed."
Despite the claim of this tradition's dating back to the days of the Roman Empire, there's no reason to
suppose that it does. A coin might be placed in the mouth of a fallen
Roman soldier (to get him across the River Styx), but his comrades wouldn't be leaving their money
on his grave, but rather expending it on a funeral banquet in his honor.

Did you get the news about the passing of Wanda Winebarger. I just found out about it today. Sad to

Mary
Thanks for letting me know. I did not hear until you let me know. Went to Facebook and found some
additional information.
with great sadness, I want to share that my mother-in-law Wanda Winebarger Maciol has passed.
Please share if you know her as the funeral arrangements are in this post. Your messages are great
comfort and appreciated.
Randy Zussman

Wanda Carol Winebarger Maciol, Weather bird passed away at the age of 73, on Monday October 5,
2015 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Born September 4, 1942 in Lenoir, North Carolina, Wanda was
predeceased by William Harry DeVoe and her mother, Kitty DeGroot. Wanda leaves behind 3 children,
4 stepchildren, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. As a long time nurse at both Northridge
Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, Wanda always had a knack for creative mastery. Selected to head up
the holiday display competitions--no matter the holiday--each time the displays would become more
elaborate and complex. Like the time she figured out how to make a fully functioning, practically life
sized snow globe that would use a vacuum in reverse to continually blow faux snow around the
elaborate winter wonderland scene she created inside. Many credit make it work as a phrase made
famous on Project Runway, but Wanda had been making things work the whole time. When she got
an idea in her head, she was passionate and persistent in getting it done. Sometimes the things she would
use to get her projects completed would leave you tilting your head sideways, raising a brow, or, often
both. And, anyone who knew Wanda knows she was never one for waste. In fact it seems the rainy
day and what if phrases were coined just for her. Buy Wanda new kitchen utensils and shed stash
them away, saving them for someday. New clothes from a girls day of shopping? Theyll be hidden
away..she wouldnt risk wrecking them and she might need them one day. A greeting card cast aside
by someone? Wanda would keep it because she might have a use for it in one of her multitude of future
art projects. A truly creative sole, Wanda spent a great deal of her time over the past years with her
extensive collection of orchids, acrylic painting, crocheting, knitting, quilting and taking care of a virtual
farm full of animals; including cats, dogs, fish, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, a rabbit, a snake,
lizards and even a chicken!
Family, friends and others whose lives were touched by Wanda are invited to attend a memorial to be
held on Thursday, October 8th, 2015 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to reminisce, grieve, support one another and,
of course, just chat. The eulogy will be promptly at 7pm, and finger foods and beverages will be
provided throughout. Please join us at the Broward Burial & Cremation, 1801 East Oakland Park Blvd.,
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306. Phone: 954-731-4321. Contributions can be made to the American Society
for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ACPCA) at www.aspca.org/donate. You may also visit at Wanda
Winebarger-Maciol on Facebook.
Please add

James Barone from the class of 1966 to the In Memoriam list. Sorry for the sad news.

graduated from Hicksville HS in 1959. He died in Sept. He was a remarkable man. It was the 3rd
marriage for both of us. So glad I had as much time with him as I did; wish it had been more. Please see
the obituary attached. I dont know if you update your list to show members who have passed away, but
thought Id let you know. Thank you

So sorry for your loss. I remember Jimmy from back in the day. He graduated with my sister Eileen

Thanks

buffalo bob Casale
Hi Bob:
I graduated from Edison HS in NE Mpls. in 1966. Ive lived in the San Diego area since 1978 its my
real home. It was the 3rd marriage for both Jim & me. We met at a committee we were on for the
Escondido Downtown Business Assoc. He was a prominent banker & ex-Mayor at that point. I worked
for the City of Escondido as the Economic Development Director. We got together a few days after the
meeting on the pretense of talking business, but we were both attracted. A year & a half later we were
married.
He was famous for things he would say at Council meetings in particular & in the newspaper he had a
sarcastic side and was so intelligent. People still quote him today. I miss him terribly. He was a good
man. One news article called him a cross between a boy scout & Atilla the Hun that was pretty
accurate. Ive had a number of people tell me how he helped them in years past. Funding a childrens
non-profit when no one else would loan, work with the Boys & Girls Club, coaching girls softball
teams for years (he has 2 beautiful daughters), helping people buy their first homes when other banks
wouldnt give them a loan, walking customers from the bank to a start-up investment business down the
street to help the man get clients, and so on. He did many good things but didnt suffer fools, as they
say.
Thanks for telling me about his connection to your family. Take care, you do good work. Love yah back,
Jo Ann
It is with deep sadness that I report the passing of classmate, teammate and friend from the class of

BobI do know that Roger Rooman died. I believe in a boating accident in the 70's? ( not sure of the
time frame. ) But, yes, I will forward any info on deceased classmates from 1966. Are there really only
2 casualties of the Vietnam war? I mean that's wonderful if it were really true, because our class was
over 1100. I will be at the Hicksville Alumni dinner dance on 11/21. will you be there too?
See ya
Steve
I live in Augusta, Georgia and the drive is a little long.
There are only two from the class of 1966...overall, there were 16 from all classes that we knew of.

People Looking For People

I am looking to locate 2 long lost family members? I remember they lived and went to Hicksville High.
In mid to late 70's. One brother was Steven and the other was Anthony. There was a few years age
difference. Believe Anthony was the older brother. I know the last name was Italian and started with a
"C". Can you offer me any help finding either of them?
Thanks...Bill Peer

Vietnam Memorial Update

Notes sent to Joe Carfora

Is there an amount for the donation? Or do we send what we can. My brother Billy Walsh (class of '65),
served in Vietnam, but has since passed away from an Agent Orange related illness. He was only 52.

We have the names Dennis and Edward Adams on the proposed Vietnam Memorial List. Both are
unconfirmed because the information was provided from a source other than a direct source. If you are
related, can you please advise if Dennis and Edward served in Vietnam and the year of their graduation.

The editors send a huge thanks to all who sent in some bucks to sustain the
distribution of the newsletter via our website. The response was quick and we reached
a plateau quickly that will keep up going for several years. I know there are many more who would have
contributed had we not said please hold off sending any more money. When the time comes again, the
remaining former students can step up to the plate.
Many thanks

Dear Buffalo Bob
Thanks to you and all the HixNews editors for putting out this enjoyable publication every month. I am
sending in a contribution to the HixNews fund from the 5 Schwartz kids who grew up in the A
section. Our parents were always involved in the Hicksville Schools and Community organizations. Our
mom, Muriel Schwartz was the president of Dutch Lane PTA and Hicksville PTA Council and dad,
Jacques Schwartz ran the Cub and Boy Scout troops in the Dutch Lane area for many years. My family
is now scattered with Scott and Alan living in Colorado; Joe and Lou live in Florida; and I am living in
Syosset.
Thanks again for bringing back memories and catching up with each other in the present with the Hix
News.
