“There’s so much to do here,”
Travis says. “A family could really
make a day of it.” Ground level at-
tractions such as panning for fossils
and gems, rock climbing and even a
neighboring wildlife ranch only add
to caverns’ appeal.
While specific events, dates
and times have yet to be released,
visitors are encouraged to visit the
Natural Bridge Caverns website at
naturalbridgecaverns.com to keep
posted on upcoming “Discovery
Days” attractions throughout the
summer months of June, July and
August.
While the Wuest family intends to
expand the attraction in the future,
Travis assures the community that
activities at Natural Bridge Caverns
will always be themed around, “na-
ture, family and adventure,” much
like the caves themselves.
The caverns are located 30 miles
outside San Antonio off I35. Open
daily from 9-4 with extended sum-
mer hours, the caverns are an excel-
lent opportunity to experience one
of Texas’ great geological treasures.

Blanco

Classic Cars Showcased at

Blanco State Park on May 15
Each year on the third weekend in May, the beautiful Blanco State Park is
transformed as the Blanco Classic Car Show bringing immaculately restored
vehicles to the grassy banks of the Blanco River. As many as 200 restored cars
and trucks are on view, including antique pre-1949 vehicles through 1959 and
up, “muscle cars,” “Vettes,” Mustangs, modified/custom Chevys, original/re-
stored trucks, pre-1958, 1959 and up British vehicles, MG’s, Triumphs, foreign
cars, street rods, and special interest vehicles. This year the show will be held
on Saturday, May 15, which is also Armed Services Day.

Car check-in is from 8 am to 11 am, and the event runs from 9 am to 3 pm, with
the awards presentation at 2 pm. The event is free to “walk-in” viewers. Prizes
for categories include 1st Place, 2nd Place, and Honorable Mention as well
as dash plaques and other awards. Trophies awarded include Park Ranger’s
Choice, Mayor’s Choice, and Best of Show. Winners in the various categories
are selected by ballot of entrants. In the past, participants and their classic
vehicles have come from all over the state with as many as 200 participating
vehicles and over 1,000 visitors to admire them.

Dennis Moore, an avid car collector and Past Master of the Blanco Masonic
Lodge #216 started the show back in 1988, and it has grown each year since its
beginning.

The Blanco Masonic Lodge is the operating sponsor of the show, which is co-
sponsored by the Blanco State Park. The stated goal of the show is “to provide
a showcase for the talents of local car clubs, restoration enthusiasts and to
provide fun and entertainment for visitor’s and participants while generat-
ing funds to support community projects, awards and educational support
programs, in and around the Blanco community.”

Revenues, after car show expenses, go to scholarship programs, reading

improvement programs, educational and community recognition awards, civic
improvements, and disaster and other relief programs. The show funds such
programs as the Community Builder Award and the Ernie R. Davis, Jr. Memorial
“Care & Share Dinner,” which is an annual Thanksgiving time meal prepared
and served by the Blanco Masonic Lodge and Blanco Eastern Star.

Bill Rife, a Past Master of the Blanco Masonic Lodge, eagerly tells everyone,
“the show would not be possible without the support of many local commu-
nity sponsors and other supporters both locally and across the state.”

The show atmosphere is fun and exciting without being uncomfortable for
families with small children. Visitors can enjoy great food and cool refresh-
ments while strolling through and around these beautiful vehicles. Proud
owners and club members are eager to tell the stories behind the vehicles on
display and to share their love of classic vehicles with the visitors and other
classic car owners.

Music from the past and present drifts over the show area while visitors stroll
from one car to the next. Event t-shirts will be available for purchase to com-
memorate your visit. There are excellent restroom facilities available and a first
aid station staffed by the highly-qualified Blanco County EMS to handle any
medical emergencies that may arise. For more information and registration,
contact Dobie Benson at 830-833-5348 or e mail benson@txwinet.com.

Llano Shows It’s Texas Proud

May 28-30
Join Llano for the 5th annual Texas Proud Festival – a full weekend in celebration of
our Texas heritage. The festival will host events for all ages, and features the Brazos
Bottom Cow’ographers, a unique group of entertainers specializing in skits which
capture the essence of the Old West. The setting for much of the festival will be on
the grounds of the historic 1895 Top Jail, which was recently designated as one of
the most endangered Texas buildings. Fascinating tours of the jail complete with
Texas legends will be given throughout the weekend, and the Celtaire String Band
will bring a taste of Americana music to the site. Ongoing activities throughout the
weekend will include a CASI sanctioned chili cook-off, stagecoach rides, food and
craft vendors, music on the courthouse square, pony rides for the kids. An old-
fashioned ice cream social will precede an evening of cowboy music and poetry,
featuring Mike Blakely and W.C. Jameson at the historic LanTex Theatre. For more
information, call the Llano Chamber of Commerce at 325-247-5354 or go online to
www.llanochamber.org.

New Stars on the Walk of Fame

June 5
If you find yourself in Corpus Christi on Saturday, June 5, you’ll be able to catch a
10am ribbon cutting for the South Texas Music Walk of Fame. This lovely, free at-
traction is a privately funded tribute to the area’s music makers, and this year, one
of the honorees is a Hill Country favorite son. Mike Blakely does his ranching in this
neck of the woods nowadays, but he did his growing up all over South Texas. He
will perform during the ceremony, then sign his newest book at Surf Club Re-
cords at 12:00 noon. Other inductees this year include Geronimo Trevino, Michael
O’Connor, Agapito Zuniga, Ponty Bone and Terri Hendrix. Geronimo will also do
a book signing, followed by an in-store performance. The other artists will play at
a concert that night at the Executive Surf Club. All just one block from the bay in
the beautiful courtyards of the WaterStreet Market. For more information, call Surf

Bandera

Find Something Special

at the Gingerbread House By Genie Strickland
When you think of a Gingerbread House, don’t you always think of something
sweet and wonderful? Isn’t that what lured Hansel and Greta? You can be sure
you will find something sweet and wonderful in the Gingerbread House gift
shop located in downtown Bandera.
The Gingerbread House is a treasure trove of beautiful home décor, fabulous
floral arrangements and delightful sweets. The premier floral shop of Bandera
offers full florist services, wedding planning and gift baskets with everything
from gourmet coffees, nuts and delicious fudge, and striking one of a kind home
décor. It is truly a Gingerbread House filled with wondrous things!
It all began in the spring of 1980 when Margaret Paradee worked in the
downtown office of her husband’s construction business. She admired the local
retail stores and came up with the idea she could add a few retail items to the
lobby of the business office with the vision of eventually having her own store.
In 1981 her husband decided he did not need the downtown office location
any longer, so Margaret took it over and expanded her merchandise. It was slow
going at first but business boomed and soon Margaret purchased a larger store
which is now her current location at 1110 Cedar Street.
“I have always, with heart in hand, tried to make my store a place where locals
could find that perfect gift and have a friend to help them,” said Margaret when
asked about fulfilling her vision. She has done just that. Margaret added a floral
department and then candies and fudge.
“I always have local business in mind. I am proud local folks tell me they are
happy they do not have to go to the big city to find that special gift,” said Marga-
ret. “I also welcome the tourist and have been pleased to see them purchasing
items for their homes. My goal has always been to bring Bandera a business of
which they could be proud.”
Proud they are. It is obvious Margaret loves her customers and as time has
passed she has formed strong attachments that grow stronger as time passes.
The Gingerbread House is like a small department store. They specialize in
western home décor, Tyler Candles, homemade fudge and Sweet Shop Truffles.
You will find a great selection of Hallmark Greeting Cards, beautiful glassware,
wreaths and silk flowers. The Gingerbread House also has a fabulous jewelry
selection priced just right for that special person. Best of all is the service... and
don’t forget to get your free taste of fudge.
