Assignment
Speeches, Books, Poems, and common conversation can inspire us to do many things. Chris
McCandless was inspired by the journey of previous explorers so much that he went on one
himself. There are also many songs in todays culture that encourage and inspire people to do
things. Take for example, there might be a certain song that renders with you. It may be how the
words are sung or the topic of the song. But it may inspire you to do something that you might
not have done before. Many seminars are held that teach about self-exploration and inspiration.
Looking from stories of other language and cultureshow do people from other cultures
view adventure?
How can language give us a broader definition of the word adventure?
What power can words hold?
Words hold the power to change peoples lives. Words can drive us to tears and sorrow. Words
can even cause us to do terrible acts of violence. However it is not the word itself but rather what
is in the word. For example, if I were to say to you Tienes cara de tonta/tonto Without
speaking Spanish, you would most likely not be bothered nor affected by that statement.
However when I translate the meaning to You have a stupid face the effect becomes different.
The word may hold more value to you because of its meaning.
How might someone who only speaks one language have a different adventure than
someone who speaks multiple languages?
SUPPORTING DETAILS
In my journal I will include other stories that I have read and music that I have heard
about different ways of life and how they have affected people and me.
FORMAT
I can do mine in the format of a compare and contrast journal where I compare and contrast an
adventure of two people. One who speaks more than one language and the other who only speaks
one. I can do this in the format of an essay where I talk about the differences of adventure in
different cultures. I can do mine on a personal essay of how language has affected my thoughts
and views of the world.
