Butterflies are Always Prepared to Fly, Are You?

Undesirable Behavior Targeted:
In my Kindergarten classroom, we start the morning with science. As the students are walking in the classroom THEY LIKE
TO START the day by being out of their seats, talking loudly, science folders are still in their backpacks, and backpacks are
still on their desk when the bell rings. This interferes with learning because instructional time is being lost, and the students
are missing out on their valuable time.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted:
Students will come into class, take out science folder and put in on their desk, put backpacks away in their appropriate
cubbies, and be seated in their assigned seats before the bell rings.
Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced when & how?
1. Immediate R+ when the students have performed the desirable behavior, they will receive a piece of material to place on the
bulletin board (Egg stage = cotton balls, Caterpillar stage = green pom-poms, Chrysalis stage = brown paper, Butterfly stage
= colorful construction paper)
2. Ongoing R+ after EACH stage is filled in on the bulletin board (Ex. Once the egg stage is completely filled), I will take them
outside for 10-15 minutes as part as their science activity to discover different critters, and where they live (I will provide
magnifying glasses, measuring tape, little plastic shovels)
3. Overall R+ - when the classroom goal has been met, the students will create their own butterfly life cycle. They can either
draw the butterfly life cycle or use different materials such as pasta (bowtie for butterfly, shell for cocoon etc.) I will also
set up a live butterfly garden in the classroom so students can visually see the four stages.
4. When students have followed the desirable behavior, I will immediately place a piece of material in their little baskets on the
side of their desk that I have provided for them. During transition time from science to reading I will have my students
come up to the bulletin board and place their material for the stage they are on; thus it will not interfere with learning time.
Interactive Learning Activity
For the activity, students will be able to observe and discuss how a butterfly is formed through the butterfly life cycle. When
the students have completely filled the bulletin board, I will have already ordered and provide a Butterfly Garden Kit that will
be set up and displayed in the classroom. The students will be able to witness a real life butterfly cycle and see how they go
through each stage of their life. On the day the butterflies hatch, which will be around Butterfly Day (mid-March), the
students will create their own butterfly life cycles by using pasta or simply drawing it. After the students have created their
own butterfly cycle and are displayed all around the bulletin board, we will have a science session outside where we will go
over the cycle one more time and then release the butterflies.
TEKS: 1st grade, Science
1.10) the student knows that organisms resemble their parents and have structures and processes that help them survive
within their environments, the student is expected to:
D. observe and record life cycles of animals
Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors:
I will have the listed expectations on the board, making sure they are big, clear, bold and colorful in order for students to
easily read them. I will then demonstrate by modeling exactly what to do when walking in the classroom. After I have
modeled a couple times, the students will then practice at different times for a week until they have understood the desired
behavior.
Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan:
I will begin teaching the plan by first introducing the desired behavior, I will then explain to the students about the butterfly
display and demonstrate how they can earn their pieces for the board. I will point out to the different stages a butterfly goes
through to become what it is. I will then tell the students that we will be working together to fill in the stages so we can see a
beautiful butterfly form, and what our final activity will be once we have completed the board.
Provide options
This can be also used in any subject throughout the day, and different behaviors as well. This can be done in the secondary
level with multiple class periods.

Demonstrate all necessary items: Butterfly Garden Kit, cotton balls, pom-poms, construction paper, material for
interactive activity, and an outside area.
