FOREIGN DEGREES & BRANCH CAMPUSES

MALAYSIA is known as one of the
top education destinations in Asia
and its many foreign branch
campuses have contributed to its
status.
With lower tuition fees and
living cost compared to campuses
in the home country, branch
campuses are attracting students
locally and abroad.
Differences in tuition fees
between local private institutions
and branch campuses are not so
great, but the payoff is the branch
campus experience.
Furthermore, just like private
institutions, Malaysian students
who enrol in branch campuses are
also eligible for local financial
schemes and scholarships such as
government loans (PTPTN) and
Public Service Department (JPA)
scholarships that can help ease
their financial constraints.
In addition, branch campuses
also offer their own scholarships,
which could be less competitive
than those offered at the home
campus.
Due to the lower academic fees
and living costs compared to the
home campuses, branch campuses
in Malaysia attract many students
from South Asia, South-East Asia,
the Middle East, Russia and Africa,
in addition to exchange students
from the home campus.
With cheaper education costs
paired with inter- and intracampus programmes, branch
campuses become melting pots of
culture, people and ideas and have
some of the most diverse student
communities in the country.
This allows local students to
become more open to people from
various backgrounds and cultures.
In return, foreign students are able
to indulge in the Malaysian
experience and explore what the
country has to offer.
According to Athira Nortajuddin,
an alumna from The University
of Nottingham Malaysia Campus,
her branch campus experience
has exposed her to diverse
communities that have impacted
her personal growth.
I am beyond grateful that I was
exposed to an international
environment where I now have
friends from all over the world.
Back in my undergraduate days,
I hung out with not only my
Malaysian friends of different races
but also exchange students from
the United Kingdom and China
campuses as well as other
international students, whom I am
proud to say I am still in touch
with, she says.

A growing presence
The branch campuses in
Malaysia are predominantly of
universities in the UK and
Australia, with establishments in
the Klang Valley, Sarawak and
Johor.
This is likely because of
Malaysias long historical
relationship with the UK and its
proximity to Australia.
The home campuses of many
branch campuses have been
known to be on the forefront of
education and they are also some
of the oldest and best academic
institutions in the world.

Key to the world

According to Tracking
International Graduate Outcomes
2011 by the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills, UK,
employees who have a UK degree
have higher salaries
when hired in the home country.
Australian universities, on the
other hand, are well known for
their cutting-edge work in research
and development in addition to
producing distinguished graduates.
To achieve this, branch
campuses in Malaysia bring
in experts and curricula from their
home campuses.
The programmes at Heriot-Watt
Universitys foreign campuses
consist of the same curricula as the
home campus in the UK.
Students will have the same
academic experience when
studying in the different HeriotWatt campuses in Edinburgh,
Dubai and Malaysia. The
differentiating factors are the
cultural and learning experiences
students get from studying in these
countries.
Branch campuses also work
closely with local institutions and
academicians in terms of
education, partnerships, and
research and development.
These efforts help to provide the
best education for students and, in
the long run, aid their transition if
they decide to further their studies
abroad.
Helen Sneha Jambunathan, a
graduate from the School of Arts
and Social Sciences, Monash
University Malaysia, believes that
her academic experience in a
branch campus contributed to her
acceptance to Cambridge
University to pursue her masters
degree.

Branch campuses in Malaysia

have been established in the
Klang Valley, Sarawak and the
Iskandar region of Johor.

My undergraduate experience
was academically thoughtprovoking and I was able
to expand my horizons by
producing content such as radio
documentaries and magazine
articles.
I also completed an internship
at a local civil society organisation
as part of a credited unit.
These opportunities allowed me
to gain valuable work experience,
network and learn about

community engagement, while

applying the skills of the classroom
to real-life situations.
That exposure has definitely
shaped and redefined my future
goals as well as opened new doors
for me, she says.
Branch campuses also offer an
excellent buffer period for students
who are planning to pursue a
degree in the home campus but
want to eliminate excess costs in
the first few years.

Typically, students can opt to

transfer their credits to the home
campus to continue their studies
there or enrol in an exchange
programme to the home campus or
other international partner
campuses to experience studying
abroad.
Hence, branch campuses offer a
uniquely international academic
experience that encompasses the
comfort and cost effectiveness of
studying locally.

RECENTLY ranked among the

worlds top 100 universities under
the age of 50 by the Times Higher
Education and for world-class
graduate employability by the
QS rankings, the education at
Swinburne University of
Technology in Melbourne,
Australia, is undoubtedly first-rate.
Its only campus outside of
Australia, in Sarawak, offers the
same high-quality education. It has
the same programmes and
maintains the same academic
standards as its parent campus.
Swinburne University of

(Swinburne Sarawak) emphasises
industry-engaged teaching and
learning, just like its Australian
campus.
It has been producing
professionally oriented graduates
with the skills that match industry
needs by merging teaching,
research and industry expertise
with a supportive real-world
learning environment, since its
inception in 2000.
Over the past few years, its
graduate tracking shows that more
than 90% of its graduates are
absorbed by industries six months
after their graduation. Only four
months after receiving their scrolls
in October last year, 93.53% were
employed.
This could be attributed to the

Students are able to obtain a
globally recognised qualification
with only a third of the tuition fees
of its Australian campus.
Most of its three-year degrees
require undertaking a professional
major with either a co-major or
two minors. Co-majors and minors
may be different from the
discipline of the major so that they
may add breadth to their major.
Students are able to choose from
a diverse range of subjects from
other discipline areas. This enables
them to develop an appreciation
of other disciplines that will
complement their profession and
further education prospects.
Besides academic pursuits, there
are many extracurricular sports
and recreational clubs on campus
that add variety to student life.
Advised by staff, the clubs offer a
holistic university experience as
well as provide fun and
educational activities, which help
to mould students into well
rounded individuals.

during her studies in Sunway University.

The mark
of brilliance
RECOGNISED throughout the world as a
mark of quality, an American degree is a
passport to todays global job market. The
American Degree Transfer Programme
(ADTP) under the Centre for American
Education (CAE) at Sunway University offers
a smooth and quick pathway for students to
pursue their degree at a university of their
choice in the United States.
The ADTP at Sunway University accepts
students for all majors. For most majors,
students spend the first two years of their
studies in Malaysia and final two years in
the US.
Students are required to take core subjects
and liberal arts courses. The flexibility of the
programme allows other transfer options for
selected American universities, where
students can complete one year of their
studies in Malaysia and continue the last
three years in the US.
Students who meet the required academic
grades can choose their transfer institution
from a wide range of universities in the US
and Canada, among other places.
Tailored after the American
undergraduate degree programme, Sunway
Universitys ADTP provides students with a
mixture of subjects that are both specific and
general education courses, ensuring that
students are well prepared for the next
phase of their studies in the US.
ADTP students in Sunway are encouraged
to take part in extracurricular activities,
including sporting events. They not only
strive for good grades but also commit
themselves to learning and character
building outside the classroom.
Maryann Kok Cher Ling, a former ADTP
student, shares that being actively involved
in athletic activities during her studies in
Sunway helped her become a better person,
personally and academically.
She was one of the swimmers who
represented the Selangor team in the 2016
Sukma Games, winning two relay gold
medals and two individual silver medals.
For Kok, her experience in Sukma 2016
helped her develop skills that are useful in
the academic side of life. As an athlete, she
underwent 20 hours of training per week.
It helped me develop solid time

studies and swimming, says Kok.

The young swimmer ensured that she had
a timetable and studied ahead of time to
maintain a good balance between her
academic and athletic commitments.
Currently a junior in the University of
Idaho, Kok also plans to participate in other
competitions during her studies in the US,
hoping to gain more experience of other
cultures, meet and develop new friendships
and broaden her horizons.
The first-hand experience gained in
sporting events for students such as Kok
helps them acquire the mix of knowledge,
skills and understanding to live in and
contribute to the global society.
The ADTP at Sunway strives to bring out
the best of each student and equip them with
the skills required to perform well
academically.
The ADTP has been developed specifically
to allow students to study the first part of
their American degree at Sunway University.
The programme has been designed in
consultation with American universities to
ensure that students can transfer seamlessly
to the US to complete their studies.

Opportunities
across borders
UNIVERSITY of Southampton
Malaysia Campus (USMC) graduate
Jeremy Fong gave an inspirational
talk to parents and students during
the universitys Open Day.
Just a few months before
graduation, Fong secured a
graduate job opportunity with
Rolls-Royce, a leading aero-engine
manufacturing company.
It was not an easy feat as he had
to undergo a battery of tests and
interviews before he was picked as
Rolls-Royces new controls
engineer at its Birmingham office
in the United Kingdom.
Fong, who earned a MEng in
Engineering Aerospace from
USMC, shared how a disappointing
situation can become a positive
experience and how he was just
like any other student before
attending university.

Initially, I applied to Nanyang

Technological University after
finishing my A-Levels, but sadly,
I was rejected. Im not going to
lie, Southampton was my second
choice of university but it was
one of the best decisions I ever
made, said Fong.
As he reflected on his
academic experience at
Southampton, some themes
became apparent taking
responsibility for your own
learning and development,
building good relationships with
teaching staff and friends, and
learning to manage time and
setting priorities.
My first year in university
was an adjustment period. I
realised that university is not
school. There would be no more
spoon-feeding of knowledge.

Fong then started taking

responsibility for his own
learning studying materials
beyond the formal curriculum as
well as developing an
independent criticism of the
material and content.
Academics cannot make
students do these things. At best,
they can provide the knowledge
base to stimulate students critical
thinking, inspire intellectual risk
taking, and encourage
independent research. However,
ultimately, the effort, motivation
and interest come from students
themselves.
After his first year with USMC,
his hard work paid off when he
became a consistent recipient of
the prestigious Lloyds Register
Foundation scholarship for being
the top three in his cohort. The

Fong shares that taking responsibility for your own learning, building good
relationships with staff and friends, as well as learning to manage time and
setting priorities were some of the key aspects of his learning experience.

scholarship also covered his tuition

fees for the coming years.
In his third year, Fong and his
batch mates transitioned to the UK
campus.
I was pretty scared of making
new friends and did not know how
to fit in but my time abroad was
the best experience of my life.
He likened his final year to a
marathon that was riddled with
deadlines and among them was his
thesis. Fortunately, his supervisors
were always there to help him.
I couldnt think of any better
supervisors to have Prof Phil
Joseph and Dr Michael Kingan
were always there to help me even
when that meant having Skype
calls after office hours, he said.

ESTABLISHED in the 1800s,

Heriot-Watt University is a
leading British institution noted
for its professionally relevant
programmes.
Through the years, the university
has proven its merit in various
fields, including engineering, the
built environment and business,
among others. This is corroborated
by the many accolades it has
received.
For instance, Heriot-Watt was
ranked 27th in the United Kingdom
and third in Scotland by Times
Higher Educations Table of Tables
this year.
Additionally, some of the
universitys courses, such as
chemical engineering, chemistry,
mechanical engineering and
marketing, were ranked in the top
10 among UK universities as well
as first in Scotland, according to
the National Student Survey 2015.
Heriot-Watt has successfully
expanded its reach over the years
and now operates five campuses:
three in the UK, one in Dubai and
one in Malaysia.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
currently offers programmes at the
foundation, undergraduate and
postgraduate levels.
Apart from that, the university
accepts both local and
international qualifications such
as the International General
Certificate of Secondary Education
(IGCSE), O-Levels and International

Akmal Rafiq Ariffen, an IB
graduate who is currently pursuing
the universitys undergraduate

Malaysia because he believes that
the university would help enhance
his career prospects.
Heriot-Watt University offers a
promising chemical engineering

The university provides the

option of an enhanced degree
where I can obtain an MEng
degree in four years. The
university will undeniably increase
my career prospects, but to be
more pragmatic, my degree will be
worth as much as I make of it.
The universitys multiple
campuses have opened up transfer
opportunities for students. With
the launch of Heriot-Watts Go
Global programme, students have
even more flexibility in terms of
when to transfer and the duration
of transfer.
As the curricula have been

standardised across the universitys

campuses, there is little to no
academic barriers for campus
transfers; students can transfer as
long as their programme is offered
at the campus of choice.
It was this prospect of an
international study experience that
prompted Florence Ong Woei Yng
to pursue her studies at HeriotWatt University.
Ong, who is currently a thirdyear student in the universitys
undergraduate programme,
started her studies at Heriot-Watt
University Malaysia before
transferring to the Edinburgh
campus last year.
There is only a handful of
foreign branch campuses in
Malaysia offering exchange
and transfer programmes.

Ong, who is pursuing the

universitys chemical
engineering programme,
was able to transfer
seamlessly to Heriot-Watts
UK campus thanks to the
universitys Go Global
programme.

Heriot-Watt University goes a step

further, teaching the same syllabus
across all of its campuses. This
eliminates problems such as
incompatible courses or subjects
and insufficient credit transfers. I
would encourage students out
there to take advantage of this
opportunity.
Living the life of a student in
two entirely different worlds
teaches you to be
independent and have
self-discipline and
perseverance. It will push
you beyond your comfort
zone and youll be
amazed by what you
can actually
achieve. It will be
an eye-opening
and life-changing
experience.
Becoming a global
student is by far the
best decision Ive
made, she says.

Monash researchers won four gold medals at the 2016 International

Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (Itex) award.

Innovation
in education
ALL four Monash University
Malaysia teams were awarded
gold medals at the recent 2016
International Invention,
Innovation & Technology
Exhibition (Itex).
Organised by the Malaysian
Invention and Design Society
(MINDS), the exhibition aims to
cultivate the ability to think
critically a quality separating
innovators from followers.
Inventions were judged based
on the following criteria: novelty,
inventiveness, usefulness and
application, presentation and
demonstration, market and
commercial potential and
environmental friendliness.

Golden inventions
The first invention was a UV
LED (light-emitting diode) mask
aligner system by Dr Narayanan
Ramakrishnan and PhD student
Lee Neam Heng from the School
of Engineering.
The lithography technique
is the driving force in the
patterning technique, where
electronic chips as small as
22nm are produced.
Out of the many lithography
techniques used in IC (integrated
circuit) fabrication, UV
lithography is one of the most
common methods.
A mask aligner is generally
used for carrying lithography
processes and the investment of
the type of setups can be quite
expensive.
In Malaysia, the IC fabrication
industries, research and
development institutions,
government research centres
and universities import these
machines at a high cost of
RM400,000 to RM500,000 for a
basic bench-top system.
With this invention of a UV
LED lithography mask aligner
system based on solid state
lighting devices, production cost
can be as low as RM15,000 to
RM20,000, with operational
functions equivalent to the
state-of-the-art bench-top mask
aligner system.
The second creation was a
worlds first pH-sensitive
inorganic nanocrystals by
Assoc Prof Md Ezharul Hoque
Chowdhury from the Jeffrey
Cheah School of Medicine and

Health Sciences.
To serve as an efficient drug
transporter, this product is
designed based on pH-sensitive
and biodegradable inorganic
nanoparticles that have
properties of electrostatic
binding to DNA
(deoxyribonucleic acid), siRNA
(small interfering ribonucleic
acid), proteins and small
molecule drugs.
It can deliver a capacity across
the blood stream and cell
membrane efficiently to exert a
therapeutic effect.
The third invention was an
aquatic animal growth
enhancement by Prof Ishwar
Parhar, Dr Satoshi Ogawa and
Dr Shogo Moriya of the Brain
Research Institute Monash
Sunway (BRIMS).
This project develops a new
method for the growth
enhancement of aquatic animals
with a combination of two
proteins kisspeptin and ghrelin.
The last was a biodegradable
polymers for drug delivery and
wastewater treatment invention
by Dr Pushpamalar Janarthanan
and Dr Saravanan Muniyandy of
the School of Science and School
of Pharmacy.
The innovation was based on
the concept of modifying
polysaccharides in cutting-edge
strategies to create something,
which can potentially be used in
a clinical setting, as well as for
future application in the
biomedical and pharmaceuticalrelated drug delivery systems.
This can be administered in
the gastrointestinal tract to
transport anti-cancer drugs to the
targeted site efficiently.
These hydrogels are able to
deliver anti-cancer drugs to the
targeted site without harming
normal cells. It also has the
ability to enhance the therapeutic
effect.
Apart from treating cancer,
with both the swellable and
pH-sensitive characters, it can
also be used to adsorb heavy
metals and dyes from industrial
wastewater, contributing to
better management of
wastewater in the agricultural
industry.
