ZIKA IN THE US.

By Delinda Car heel

How Zika spreads

According to the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention, Zika is spread mostly by the
bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito
(Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These
mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters.
They can also bite at night.

Zika can be transmitted through:

Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to

her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can
cause certain birth defects.

Many people infected with Zika won?t have

symptoms or will only have mild symptoms.

There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.

The Florida Department of Health has
identified an area in one neighborhood of
Miami where Zika is being spread by
mosquitoes. Learn more.

Mosquito bites
From a pregnant woman to her fetus
Sex
Blood transfusion (very likely but not
confirmed)

Zika Symptoms

Fever
Rash
Joint pain
Conjunctivitis

Other symptoms include:

-

Muscle pain
Headache

Symptoms can last for several days to a week.

People usually don?t get sick enough to go to the
hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika. Once a
person has been infected with Zika, they are likely
to be protected from future infections.

Detox Diets: Good or Bad?

By: Chelsea M ur r ay
Detox diets have been a fad diet for many years. Celebrities, personal trainers, and
people alike all claim that detox diets cleanses your body of hazardous chemicals and also
helps you lose weight. But, is it really good for your body in the long run? What is a detox
diet? A detox diet is defined as: ?a program of diet, herbs, and other methods of removing
environmental and dietary toxins from the body.? (Wong, 2015).
Now, most detox diets last around five days to two weeks. It is an all-liquid diet, so
no solid foods during that time. I, personally, have completed a detox diet. A few months
ago I started a detox diet that as eight glasses a day with water, chili pepper, all natural
lemon juice, and all natural maple syrup. I lasted about three days before I could continue
on. I was light headed and starving. Most people can last longer than I did. But I will say
that detox diets are very unhealthy for your body. Yes, they detoxify you but to the point
of starvation, dehydration, and insomnia. If you do not eat during the day, it can disturb
your sleeping habits.
What kind of detox diets do celebrities use? Well there are several. The first one is
a raw food detox diet. That plan eliminates cooked food from the diet. The next one is the
seven day goop detox diet. That one includes shakes, water, nuts, fruit, and other
non-cooked healthy meals. This one is a long-term plan that was made to detox your body
in a healthy, natural way. The next one is the master cleanse. This is the one that I
personally tried and failed at. You just drink eight glasses a day with water, chili pepper,
all natural lemon juice, and all natural maple syrup for ten days. Twenty if you?re feeling
good (Yovino, 2016).
Detox diets go back and forth with experts on how healthy they are to go through.
If it is a couple of days of a detox diet, then it is okay to handle. Any more than four days
worth, experts say that it is no longer healthy and considered dangerous due to the
starvation aspect. All in all, it is up to you if you want to shed pounds fast and go through a
detox cleanse, or if you want to lose weight the natural more healthy way.

M eal Prep I deas for Busy Families

By Venus L owe

In today?s day and age, more families have become a two income family. That means both
parents are working instead of one parent at home while the other works. With both parents
working, there is no time to cook a home cooked meal. With that being said, most of the time,
families are eating fast food at places like McDonalds, Burger King, or even Wendy?s.
In order to save money from going out every night for dinner, try preparing some home cooked
meals. By this I mean, prepare a week of foods and store it in the freezer. Pinterest offers a
variety of ideas on what kinds of foods to make, and store them in the freezer. Check out
www.pinterest.com, some of the recipe ideas can offer tips on saving anywhere from fifty to a
hundred dollars a week.
Paula Bernstein, of Parents magazine, offers great tips on how to prepare meals for busy
families just like hers. For starters, take fifteen minutes out of the day and work on creating
meals for the week. I just watched my uncle take the same amount of time scrolling through the
cookbooks and came up with a weeks?worth of meals just like that! Then take a trip to the
grocery store with a list of the foods needed for the meals that have been created for that week.
Just as well as preparing foods for the week is helpful, try creating the same idea for side dishes
too. You can also check into buy pre prepped fruit and vegetables (Bernstein, 2011).
Make sure the meals are healthy by adding fruits and vegetables. Try to avoid using a way to
fry your meals. You can bake meals and put foods in the crock pot. So in conclusion, prepping
meals for that busy family can be done in simple steps. First sit down and organize a plan.
Decide the menus, buy the foods and make sure to have them stored in the freezer until ready to
use. Check out websites like www.pinterest.com, www.diynatural.com for other prepping meal
ideas. You will be glad you did.

Ovar ian Cancer Awareness M onth

By: Chelsea M ur r ay

Ovarian cancer effects thousands of

women every year all across the globe.
September is ovarian cancer awareness
month. This month is vital to the outreach,
education, and fundraising for the cure for
ovarian cancer. Most women know all about
breast cancer awareness and how to check
themselves for lumps and anything else
abnormal. Ovarian cancer needs to be more
discussed and more known in order to help
our fellow women get the treatment they need
and to make sure they?re getting their
wellness checks annually.
Each year, over 21,000 women are
diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Over 14,000
women will die because of it yearly. If
detected early enough, about ninety percent of
women will survive. But in most cases, the
cancer is noticed too late because women are

not getting the proper check-ups they need in

order to catch these types of medical issues
early on. Ovarian cancer awareness month
strives to educate young and old women alike
to make sure they know the signs and to know
when to get checked (OCA, 2016).
Some of the symptoms of ovar ian cancer
are:
-

Bloating Fatigue
Difficulty eating or getting too full too
fast
Shortness of breath
Nausea, indigestion, vomiting, or
diarrhea
Backaches
If you or anyone you love are
experiencing these symptoms, please
get checked as soon as possible (OCA,
2016).

K eeping a Cool Bedroom

Keeping a cool bedroom is a great

idea in the summer. Nights are entirely too
hot and the air conditioner is running to
keep the entire house cool and
comfortable. So how would you keep a
bedroom cool? Well for starters, did you
know that the heat comes from windows
when the sun is shining through?
According to Samantha Toscano, her
article entitled, ?12 Brilliant Ways to Keep
Your Home Cool without Air
Conditioning,? states that about thirty
percent of most homes have unwanted
summer heat seeping through the windows
(Toscano, 2014). Make sure to keep the
blinds closed and that can eliminate some
of that heat.
Keep doors closed in the bedroom
and other rooms you are not in, that way
the bedroom stays cool and the air will
circulate better. Instead of turning the air
conditioning on, try using the fan when
indoors and the AC at night when going to
bed. After all on summer nights like

Cleveland, the humidity is worse than the

actual dry heat like Bakersfield California.
Ms. Toscano, states in her article that
having cotton sheets can also help cool the
bedroom as well. By having cooler sheets
and a buckwheat pillow, it may help lower
the body temperature too (2016). Make
sure the ceiling fans in the bedroom are
rotated counter clockwise. Bring some
cool drinks in the bedroom with you in
case you decide to just want to lay down
and watch a movie in bed.
So in conclusion, cooling the
bedroom, is essential to help a person on
hot days. By having cooler clothes and
sheets for the bed, a person may sleep
better. Keep blinds closed in the bedroom
to keep the sun out and the heat will not
make the room as hot. Last but not least, if
you decide to have a drink before bed or
while watching a movie in your bedroom,
make sure it is filled with ice in a glass or
even a bottle water on the night stand.
Hope this helps and have a cool night.
