Lesson 1:

1. colonize- to build settlements in a new place


2. colonist- a person who settles in a new place
3. tax- money paid to the government
4. independence- freedom from control by another country
Lesson 2:

5. revolution- a fight to change a government


6. Patriot- group that wanted freedom
7. militia-a fighting force in colonial America made up of farmers, craftsmen, and
other Patriots
8. volunteer-a person who chooses to do something without getting paid
9. compass rose- shows directions on a map
10. cardinal directions-the directions north, east, south, and west
11. intermediate directions- a direction halfway between two cardinal directions.
(northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest)
Lesson 3:

12. constitution- a written plan of government


13. equality- the idea that all people should be treated fairly and equally
14. patriotism- respect and loyal support of a persons own country
15. principle-a basic idea in a system of beliefs
16. compromise-
