Aim and purpose

This unit aims to introduce learners to the basic concepts and mathematical analysis for signals
and systems representations. Learners will also gain the knowledge required to design filters.

Unit introduction
This unit will introduce learners to the fundamental ideas of signals and system analysis.
Applications of these ideas include audio and image processing, communications, control,
machine learning, and finance. First, the unit covers the basic properties of signals and
systems, the processing of signals by linear systems, Fourier series and transforms, sampling,
discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals. The learner will know how to analyze the
spectra of electrical signals to observe dominant frequency, power, distortion, harmonics,
bandwidth, and other spectral components of a signal that are not easily detectable in time
domain waveforms. These parameters are useful in the characterization of electronic devices,
.such as wireless transmitters
The unit provides learners with tools of modeling, analyzing and studying stability of systems.
The unit also aims at providing learners with knowledge required to design basic types of
analog and digital filters using Matlab and learn how to implement those design in the real life .
Finally, learners are introduced to basics of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) with applications to
speech, image processing, sensors, and actuators. The learner will gain knowledge about
specifying features and capabilities of commercial DSP applications.
The display of a spectrum analyzer has frequency on the horizontal axis and the amplitude
displayed on the vertical axis. To the casual observer, a spectrum analyzer looks like an
oscilloscope and, in fact, some lab instruments can function either as an oscilloscope or a
.spectrum analyzer
