Show that the behaviour for steel and aluminium is consistent with Hall-Petch and
determine 0 and kHP for each

2.

Consider the plastic bending of a single crystal. Prior to deformation, the crystal is of
length l and thickness t. It is then bent to a radius of curvature r. Calculate:
i) the strain gradient across the upper and lower surface and ii) the density of
geometrically necessary dislocations present in the crystal due to this strain gradient.

3.

Consider a precipitation-strengthened aluminium alloy. After an appropriate heat

treatment, the microstructure of the alloy consists of precipitates with a mean spacing of
0.2 m. Compute the shear stress required for Orowan bowing of dislocations in this
material.
For aluminium, we have the following data:
Lattice parameter a0 = 0.4 nm,
Shear modulus = 30 GPa.
