1.

a) An end to end connected composite bar is made out of steel and brass such that the total length is 100
cm and the steel section is 40 cm. If the diameter of steel section is 15 mm and that of brass is 10 mm,
determine the total extension of the bar when it is heated from 30 0C to 80 0C.

b) If the above composite bar is placed between two rigid walls before heating and then heated through
the same temperature range, determine;
I. The force exerted on walls
II. The shift of the joint between steel and brass

αst = 12 X 10-6 per 0C αbr = 9 X 10-6 per 0C

ESt = 2 X 105 N/mm2 Ebr = 5.5 X 104 N/mm2.

2.

A rigid slab weighing 600 kN is placed upon bronze rods and one steel rod each of 6000 mm2 area at a
temperature of 15 0C as shown in figure. Find the temperature, at which stress in steel rod will be zero. The
linear co-efficient of expansion for steel and bronze is 12 X 10-6 per 0C and 18 X 10-6 per 0C. Modulus of elasticity
steel and bronze are 2.1 X 105 N/mm2 and 1 X 105 N/mm2 respectively. (Neglect the height of the slab)

3.
A composite bar is made up by connecting a steel member and copper member, rigidly fixed at their end as
figure. The cross section area of the steel member is A mm2 for half of the length and 2A mm2 for the other
half of the length while that for the copper member. The coefficients of expansion for steel and copper are α 0C
and 1.3 α 0C while elastic modulus are E N/mm2 and 0.5 E N/mm2 respectively. Determine the stresses
induced in both the members when the composite bar is subjected to a rise of temperature of t 0C.
