TED TALK
In the Ted Talk video, Ron Finley talks about the lack of healthy food in the
community and how people do not realize the dangers of being over weight. He claims,
the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys. How are people supposed to
get their nutrients if in every corner you see a fast food place? Finley managed to bring
the community together and create gardens in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the
curbs. For those who were troubled by the law by being gang members, it was a great
idea to contribute to this project and forget about their violent past. Not only is it good to
plant food but also it makes you want to eat it more because you worked on that. In order
to make a change you have to be the one who takes the first step. Just like adults, children
are also affected by it. If they are not exposed to how food affects the mind and body they
carelessly eat what is set in front of them.
According to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America released
September 2016. California's adult obesity rate is currently 24.2 percent, up from 18.7
percent in 2000 and from 9.9 percent in 1990. As the years pass by, more and more
people become less active and careless as to what they put in their bodies. Ron Finley
basically wants us to go out there and make a change in our surroundings instead of
observing everything go down hill.
