When you are reading with your students this

week try to find a non-fiction story to read. Go
on a hunt to find text features that the student
knows!

Reading
This week our class will begin a new unit on
non-fiction stories. We will focus on text
features this week which students have learned
about this in past grade levels. We will discuss
what information is given to the reader through
text features vs. the actual text.
Writing
This week students will be focusing on writing
details in their stories that involve our 5 senses.
We will brainstorm words we can use to
describe things. Using sentence starters
students will use these words to write
paragraphs. After practicing together we will
add descriptive details to our own stories.

Math
This week we continue to estimate (by rounding)
to solve word problems. Students will round
before they add or subtract in order to get an
approximate answer. The key words in the word
problems are estimate and about how many.
.
Social Studies
This week we will take a break from our science
unit to focus on social studies. Students will be
learning about our local community and
government. Remember, we will learn some
history of Durham at our field trip on Friday to
Duke Homestead!
