Math This week finished up our unit on fractions and decimals. We will review the unit on
Monday and then take the test over Topic 9 on Tuesday. I hate to start a new topic before we
go on break, but we must. We will begin our next topic which covers adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We will review what is covered after break before we move onto to any
more lessons.

Reading

Next week we will not be having a regular weekly reading story which also means
we will not be having a reading test. We will instead practice reading skills by reading Christmas/Winter Holidays themed stories and poems.

Grammar Next week will be a review of the skills we have covered in the past 5 weeks. We
will take unit 3 grammar quiz. We will also be practicing editing skills.

Writing This week we looked at the IN Department of Educations ISTEP Writing Skills Rubric for 5th grade. We also looked at released 5th grade essays from previous ISTEP tests and
analyzed why certain essays received certain scores. Understanding this will help us to know
what needs to be in our writing come ISTEP time..which will be here before you know it.

Spelling We will have no spelling test next week. Enjoy the break! The list for the first
week back from break will go home at the end of next week.

Social Studies This week we went through a whole chapter.it was a short one. We
learned about the forming of the New England colonies. Students learned who founded the colony
and the reason it was created. We also talked about the colonies economy. We have completed
our study guide and our chapter test will be next Wednesday. We will be spending the days leading up the test reviewing the chapter.

Science This week we reviewed states of matter and the properties that they possess. Stu-

dents participated in a few labs both in class and online to help reinforce the concept that mass
never changes. Weight is dependent on gravity, but mass will always be the same. Hopefully this
concept will stick.

Note From the Teacher:

We have one week to go until a much needed break! Dont forget that our class Winter
Party is next Friday. We will be having a breakfast themed party. In the spirit of Christmas (morning) and our breakfast party, students will be allowed to wear their pajamas on
the 21st. The fifth grade teachers thought it would be fun to have a Christmas morning
feel on our last day. Students can bring in their sweet and chocolate presents anytime next
week. Remember they need a king-sized candy bar wrapped and a sweet treat disguised and
wrapped.
Fifth grade will be sending home a winter break packet that students can complete
over break for extra credit in math, reading, and writing. Its great practice so there is no
set back over break and to start off the next semester with bonus points! Look for that
to come home next Friday.
Have a great weekend!
