Grade Savvy!

Welcome to MTA Grade 6 October 2012

Welcome to English
This week we are wrapping up our informational text unit. We will learn how this kind of literature is organized and how to identify the organization based on the text features we have studied throughout the unit. On Tuesday, the students will create a study guide from materials we have used in class. Our vocabulary for the unit will be reviewed on both Tuesday with the review sheet and Wednesday with a Bingo vocabulary review game. Your student should continue studying for the test because his/her team may just win the Jeopardy review game I have scheduled for Thursday. The actual unit test will be on Friday and your child will know how they scored before they come home on Friday. Please set aside a quiet place and time each night for at least twenty minutes from Tuesday through Thursday evening for your child to read, reread, and reread again their Study Guide.

Welcome to Math
This week in Math: Math MEAP will be taken on Tuesday. Make sure you get plenty of rest the night before and eat a good protein breakfast. In addition to the MEAP, we are continuing our Geometry Unit with special angle pair formed by two parallel lines and a transversal. We will also be plotting points on a Cartesian Coordinate Plane and using paper folding to find bisectors and midpoints of line segments and angles. Remember, it is very important to keep up with math assignments. Right now many students are missing work which is adversely affecting grades. Please check up on your student using Skyward. Skyward gives you a direct connection to your student's gradebook allowing you to see what has been assigned and graded. If you do not have your Skyward sign-in information, please contact the school office.

Welcome to Writing Last week our students dove head first into all thing MEAP. Not only did they have an extensive review in understanding new vocabulary, but also took a two hour mock MEAP exam, giving them a real life experience of how it will truly feel. This week we will put those skills to the test, while we begin part one of the MEAP examination. We will also begin our opinion paper by researching topics and brainstorming. It is sure to be a busy and stressful week, however we are prepared and excited to see all of our hard work and dedication pay off!

Welcome to Science
We have another busy week ahead of us. The students will be completing week two of the MEAP. They will be taking the math portion on Tuesday and Social Studies on Wednesday. Please make sure your child gets to bed early and has a healthy breakfast in the morning. The students took their second lab notebook quiz on Friday. They did not do as well as I had hoped, but now they should have a better understanding of what they need to do in class. Every question on the quiz was one of their analysis questions, which we discussed in class. They should have made corrections in their lab notebooks so they could answer the question correctly on the quiz. Quiz three will be on Friday, October 19th. Please sign your childs quiz and have them return it to school by Wednesday, October 17th. Permission slips for the Plymouth Apple Orchard are due by Monday, October 22nd. Please make sure you send in the signed permission slip with $6.00 so your child is able to attend the fieldtrip. The fieldtrip will help the students get a better understanding of our soil unit, which will be completed the week of the fieldtrip. The unit test will tentatively be November 2nd. Have a great week! If you have any questions please send me an email jbkirby@wowway.com
