Reading

Prefixes: super-, out-, over-, sub underCCSS Language 2.e.

Unit 4.2 Tripping Over the Lunch Lady

Next week we will be reading Tripping Over the Lunch Lady. We will practice the reading skill of generalizing. This is a tough skill for students to grasp at this age. We are going to work hard at trying to identify and make generalizations next week. Students began reading their Christmas present from me, The BFG by Roald Dahl. Its one of my all-time favorite books. We are going to spend the next few weeks reading and discussing the novel.

Grammar Next week our grammar skill is identifying pronouns

and their antecedents. An antecedent is the noun that is being replaced with a pronoun.

Writing This week students picked the state they will be com-

pleting a state report on, and thats as far as we got. We will talk more about the state report next week and a packet of information will be given out with the requirements. We spent most of the week preparing letters and envelopes to send to all 50 states requesting a postcard and state information. We will see how many postcards and goodies we can collect from the states. Last year, my class collected 36. Lets see if we can beat that!

Spelling Next weeks words all contain the prefix of super, over,
under, sub, or out. www.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies We started chapter 6 this week that covers

the Middle Atlantic Colonies. We are learning about how the colonies of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York were created. Next week we will finish up the chapter, review, and take our chapter test.

Science This week we reviewed what we had previously learned

Instructions

Students began DARE with Officer Haskins last Friday. Officer Haskins will lead the students in a new DARE lesson every Friday for the next 10 weeks. At the conclusion of DARE students will be expected to write an essay explaining what DARE means to them. The DARE graduation ceremony will happen sometime in March. A date is yet to be set. Miss Bickel, our student teacher, will be starting with us full -time on January 29th. She will be with us through mid-May. Starting the week of February 10, Miss Bickel will begin taking over the classroom one to two subjects each week until she is fully in control. No worries, I will not be far away. I will be supporting and providing interventions while Miss Bickel teaches. The class and I look forward to giving Miss Bickel a great student teaching experience. I will leave you with a helpful way to have your students practice their spelling words. One idea that I recently found was to attach a page protector to the back of the car headrest. Put the current weeks spelling list in the plastic page and practice spelling while in the car. What a great idea for families that are always on the go. ~Mrs. Brosman
