Math This week students learned about the parts of a circle and

how to calculate the circumference of the circle. We worked on finding the area and perimeter within word problems, then we reviewed
our unit on measurement. Students took their topic 12 test today.
Graded tests will go home on Monday. Our next unit will be on Solids.

Reading

Next week our story is The Skunk Ladder. Students

will practice the skill of character and plot. We will also work on
identifying and analyzing figurative language. That skill was identified by ACUITY as needing more work and with ISTEP right around
the corner, we are in crunch time!

Grammar Next week we will cover some challenging punctua-

tion marks. Students will learn how to correctly use semicolons, colons, hyphens, and dashes.

Writing Students have been doing a great job of researching for

their state report every chance they get. I did a checkpoint this
week to see if they were at least half way through their research
(where they should be). Most students are! We will wrap up researching in the next week and half and start typing our reports.

Spelling Next weeks words are multisyllabic. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! www.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies We took time to review our chapter on the

Southern Colonies. The chapter 7 test will be next Tuesday. Students

have the opportunity to earn an extra credit point if you sign their
study guide stating you, or another adult, helped them study for
the test.

Science We focused this week on adaptations of animals. Stu-

dents read about behavior and physical adaptations that allow animals to survive in their ecosystem. Next week students will participate in a few labs/activities that will help them better understand
adaptations.

Note From the Teacher:

ISTEP+ testing is just around the corner. We are slated to begin testing the first week of
March. In case you havent heard the hubbub, the new ISTEP test has been extended and
will take the kids approximately 12 hours to complete. This is not including the 4 required
practice tests that must be taken prior to testing. There is a lot of concern about students sustainability and motivation during this long and rigorous test. I, for one, am extremely concerned. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do at the school level. It is
state mandated. If you want to know how you can help, I urge you to contact our local
legislators and States Board of Education to express your concern as a parent! I plan on
doing the same from the teacher standpoint. More information will be coming home soon
about the schedule of our testing and tips for you to help prepare your child for the long
test.
