Camper Chronicle

Math This week students worked on finding the volume of irregular

shapes by dividing solids into two or more pieces. We practiced a problem solving lesson on using objects to solve and simplify problems. Miss Bickel spent Wednesday reviewing for our Topic 13 test which was taken on Wednesday. We finished the week up by beginning our next unit on measurement (converting measurements, elapsed time, temperature, etc.).

Unit 5.5 Ghost Towns of the American West

CCSS Language 2.e.
Greek Word Parts

Reading

Next week our reading story is Ghost Towns of the American West. The reading skill we will practice is generalizing. Each reading group is finishing up with their novels. They will then work on a mini-project involving the main character from their book. This will wrap up our novel study. We will begin another one after Camp Amigo.

Grammar Next weeks grammar skill will be identifying and using adverbs correctly.

Writing State reports have been turned in and presentations have been
given. Its such a relief for all when we wrap up our state reports. Students did an awesome job this year. They put it so much work and really took pride in creating their reports. Next week Miss Bickel will begin a new writing unit, poetry, with the class.

Spelling The next spelling list is full of words with Greek word parts.
Learning these word parts will help with spelling. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! www.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies This week students learned more about the Revolutionary War. They learned about the winter at Valley Forge and about foreign aid in the war. Students watched the two Libertys Kids episodes that helped illustrate these two events. We will be wrapping up chapter 9 next week. The test, tentatively, will be at the end of the week. A study guide should be coming home shortly!

Science This week we focused on energy flowing through the ecosystem.

We learned more about producers, consumers, and decomposers. Students participated in a simulation that will be similar to a game played at Camp Amigo. We ended the week by having students create a food chain that will eventually turn into a food web next week.

Note From the Teacher:

REMINDER~ All Camp Amigo money and paperwork must be turned in by no later than Friday, April 11. Thats a week from today. We want every student to be able to attend, so please ensure all money and paperwork is in. I will be sending home a checklist next week of items that student might want/need to bring to Camp Amigo. This will help you to begin organizing and/or packing for our trip.which is already that next week! If your child takes any medication, we will need the medication turned into me in the original bottle with label prior to our trip. The other 5th grade teachers and I will hold an important chaperone meeting for Camp Amigo next Thursday, April 10. This is only for chaperones who are attending our trip. Please dont bring your child if possible. There will be a lot of parents to try and fit in my room. Having extra bodies complicates that. A notice went home on Wednesday of this week regarding the meeting. It will be at 6pm in my room. Please plan to attend as there will be LOTS of information given at the meeting including a parent packet. If for some reason you are unable to attend, please notify me ASAP so I can arrange to get you the information and discuss with you important chaperone duties.
