Math This week students worked on finding ratios and percents.

We
also reviewed creating tables and finding patterns for story problems. This
Topic 16 is a short topic and next week we will be reviewing for our test on
Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will begin a unit on equations and graphs.
Reading This week we read the myth King Midas and the Golden
Touch. We discussed how myths teach us a lesson. Students discussed how
our myth this week was meant to teach us to not be greedy and to appreci-
ate what we have in life. We also discussed how thinking through your
choices carefully before making them might help save you conflict down
the road. We practiced the skill of compare and contrast. Next week we will
read The Hindenburg. We will discuss this great disaster and practice the
reading skill of fact vs. opinion.
Grammar This week we learned and practiced using comma rules.
Next week our grammar skill will be on using quotation marks correctly
and how to correctly punctuate quotations.
Writing Students finished up their diamante poems Tuesday of this
week and many of the poems were quite impressive. On Wednesday, stu-
dents were introduce to ode poems and began creating their own odes with
a partner. We will continue working on odes for the next few weeks as stu-
dents continue to build their Poetry Portfolios.
Spelling Next weeks spelling words are a breath of fresh air. Weve
had some pretty tough lists recently. Next weeks skill is related words. It
should be much easier to receive a high score since the words are so similar.

Social Studies We finished up chapter 10 this week and filled out
our study guide. We will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing for the test
on Wednesday. Our final chapter will be on how the nation grew. We will
read about and discuss the War of 1812, the Louisiana Purchase, and west-
ward expansion.
Science We are pausing our science class right now to allow us to
catch up in social studies. However, next week, we will pick science back up
and begin a new unit on biotechnology.
