UECM1693/UECM2623/UCCM2623 Tutorial S5: Simple Linear Models

1. The following table gives information on the incomes (in thousands of RM) and charitable
contributions (in hundreds of RM) for a random sample of 10 households.
Income
Contributions

33 23 82 47 26 71 28 39 58 17
10 4 29 23 3 28 8 16 18 1

(a) Taking income as an independent variable and charitable contributions as a dependent

variable, compute SXX , SY Y and SXY .
(b) Calculate r and r2 and explain what they mean.
(c) Find the regression of charitable contributions on income.
(d) Interpret the meaning of the values of a and b calculated in part (c).
(e) Plot the scatter diagram and the regression line
Answer: (a) 1920, 4248.4, 964 (b) 0.9487, 0.9 (c) y = 5.161 + 0.4519x
2. The following ANOVA table, based on information obtained for three samples selected from
three independents populations that are normally distributed with equal variances, has a few
missing values.

(a) Find the missing values and complete the ANOVA table.
(b) At the 1% significance level, what is your conclusion for the test with the null hypothesis
that the means of the three populations are all equal?
Answer: (a) 2.16
3. A company produces 20-amp fuses used to protect car radios from too much electrical power.
Each day 400 fuses are randomly selected and tested; the results (number of defective items) for
20 consecutive days are given below. The data are listed in order by row.
10 8 7 6 6 9 12 5 4 7
9 6 11 4 6 5 10 5 9 11
Construct a p-chart in this case, is the process in statistical control?
Answer: 0.01875, 0.0391, 0, 0.01875

4. A series of quality control checks of the epoxy cement hardener in containers, 5 containers of
hardener being measured at hourly intervals for 20 consecutive hours of operation.
